Appropriate fragments of short stories, novels, memoir and scholarly works of Yemeni authors help to clarify what Yemenis think about the nomenclature of supernatural creatures, about their appearances, abilities, habits and “specializations” in contacts with humans, about their harm and their possible benefits for humans.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. Haribhatta, who wrote another Jataka‑mala one or two centuries after Arya Sura, is generally believed to be Kalidasa's contemporary. Our research is devoted mainly to the approaches of a Sanskrit kavya poet handling a pre‑literary source story. We studied Haribhatta's tale of the elephant Bodhisattva (partly based on Pali jataka 514, Chaddanta‑jataka), focusing on his reworking of the plot and on the comparison of style of the two texts. The plot reworking was analyzed within the framework of narratology, revealing a deliberate artistic composition in the later Sanskrit text. The style of the Jataka‑mala bears semblance to Kalidasa's poetry, as well as to some other court Sanskrit literature works.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. The present paper provides a detailed analysis of the collections of Kazakh female rings from the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, RAS, and the RussianMuseum of Ethnography. The research focus is placed on the design features of local complexes, which allows to present the museum collections as an ethnographic source to a broad scientific audience. Based on their own field materials, the authors describe the distinctive features of the signifying functions of rings in modern culture.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. Until recently the letter of Galdan Boshogtu Khan addressed to the Tsar of Russia in 1691 was considered to be the earliest surviving document in the Clear Script. In 2016—2018 new artefacts were discovered that date back to the first decades of writing in Oirat. These are fragments of manuscripts on birch bark, which adds to their value, as Oirat manuscripts on birch bark are extremely rare. This paper suggests a reading of the text of three fragments found in Ablaikit — the Heart Sutra translated by Zaya paṇḍita — and comments on several specific features of this text.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. The inventory annotation of all three documents (Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts, fund 77 “Relations between Russia and Persia”, inv. 2) contained an erroneous dating. Comparison of each letter with the documents from the first part of the same collection (fund 77, inv. 1) has allowed the authors to correct their approximate dating and evaluate their significance in the context of the foreign policy and the goals pursued by the embassy delegations that delivered the letters. The publication of all three documents is accompanied with the documents' description and translation of their texts into English.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. It considers the process of creation of this document, its structure and content as well as its value for modern studies on the Japanese family emblems. The main feature of the treatise is a detailed description of the use of each family emblem. Yusa Bokusai comprehensively compared the data from historical documents with artefacts he found and the memories of the eldest vassals and servicemen of the Date clan. Based on results of the comparison, he revealed how changes in the aesthetic preferences of a particular head of the Date clan influenced the status of heraldic symbols, their appearance and use. Moreover, the treatise highlighted a series of issues, related to the study of the emblematic history of the families, that for many centuries owned a large number of emblems. The most important among them are those with a correlation with the emblems' functions and its applying on certain tangible objects, precedents of granting and receiving the emblems and the reflection of these processes in historical documents, the issue of using the suzerain's family emblems by vassals and servicemen.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. The comparison itself is of particular interest to understand the emergence of early Muslim modernist discourse, influential enough to set the tone for the various ideological concepts among modern Muslims. It is argued in this paper that Arab and Tatar Muslim reformers expressed significant differences in their interpretations of the Crusades period, despite a number of summary explanations can be reviewed in the Muslim modernist discourse under consideration (such as divine punishment, great shock for the umma, etc.). At the same time, the Crusades' concept along with the image of the “Christian — Crusader — Other” became an integral part of Muslim intellectual discourse of the late 19th — early 20th centuries, due to the widespread occurrence of “print capitalism” and actualization of anti colonial narratives among Muslims.","PeriodicalId":236935,"journal":{"name":"Manuscripta Orientalia. Various illustrated woodblock and lithographic editions of the novel (published before 1911) are discussed in chronological order with focus on the special features and artistic level of the illustrations, their content and technique are compared. Artisans' approaches to interpretation of the novel is also a subject of discussion. Popular woodblock prints nianhua from Russian collections are examined in order to trace whether connections with book illustrations exist and what episodes of the novel became more popular and for what reason.
