The Fresnel fixed optic at Hartlepool was the last of its kind and was preserved by accident. Nevertheless, like ‘Rocket’ it is an extraordinary survival of an artefact representing a seminal moment of a technical achievement which had a lasting influence. It thus no less an icon than the famous locomotive. Hartlepool Heugh Lighthouse was built in the mid-1840s and lit by an optic and a gas lamp, seemingly a unique combination. The burner was apparently a completely new type, producing a flame large and steady enough to exploit the refracting and reflecting characteristics of the optic, something no previous gas burner had been able to achieve. The paper considers the optic and its lamp in the context of contemporary developments in lighthouse illumination and burner design and gives an account of the history of gaslit lighthouses before Hartlepool. The construction of the lighthouse provoked a clash between the Port authorities and Trinity House and the reasons for this are examined. The optic had an astonishingly long life of nearly 80 years, remaining in service until 1927, by which time it was perceived as an historic object which should not just be discarded. The paper concludes with the story of its preservation and subsequent display by the Hartlepool Museum service.","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131484433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But this specialised business grew out of a number of precursor partnerships and companies in the West Midlands and Bristol regions dating back into the eighteenth century which among, other items, manufactured window glass. In a number of instances, for example by employing French workers to transfer Continental techniques to England, these earlier businesses foreshadowed later practices of their successor. This paper examines the development of these family-based businesses until the mid-nineteenth century. It argues that their innovatory technical, engineering and manufacturing practices were shaped by many social and cultural influences. In this case of Chance, these included: intra-family relationships; educational provision; the supply of capital, where connections with the slave trade were significant; and a profound understanding of how to use the tax system for maximising profit. What is striking compared to the contemporary Midland businesses of the Wedgwoods or of Boulton and Watt, is the lack of interest by the Chance family until mid-century in using scientific knowledge and method.","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121563709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He travelled via New York in both directions, and apparently on his return journey, he took time off to visit the studios of the Meade brothers, Henry and Charles, to have a daguerreotype portrait taken of himself. The image was seemingly privately owned until it was acquired by Bill Becker, proprietor of the American Museum of Photography, in 2017. The author was consulted about the image and confirmed that it was indeed that of Stephenson. The image has now been acquired by Mark Andrews (Member) of Toronto, who has kindly agreed to its publication, for the first time, in the International Journal. To accompany its publication, the background story of the eight weeks Stephenson spent in the United States and Canada has been researched, to set the context for his visit and the photograph.","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126186691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
