Most of the facial expression databases are not naturally linked to the emotional state of the test subjects. In this work, we expand the authentic emotion database created in 2003 by adding more subjects. Meanwhile we combine evolutionary algorithms with neural networks and well improve the recognition rate. We also implement other classification methods like gene expression programming and decision trees in order to compare with the adjusted neural networks. The experiment results show that our way to evolve back propagation neural network is quick and it can achieve an average recognition rate of 97%. Besides, it is much faster and more accurate than the gene expression commercial software: GeneXproTools, which is usually very powerful in many common datasets’ classification.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129424583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, scientific community surprisingly falls silent on this issue. The present research attempted to evaluate this idea critically using strictly controlled lab experiment. We found that men’s performance in a commonly adopted cognitive test deteriorated when they were required to coordinate this primary test with a simple secondary test. In sharp contrast, women’s performance on the very same test improved upon the inclusion of the secondary test. This surprising gender-specific pattern is suggestive of the involvement of cognitive control in the playing out of the putative gender discrepancy in multitasking. Though the present study does not speak directly to whether women do possess superior multitasking ability over men, the empirical data presented here is in alignment with the evolutionary speculation about this gender gap derived from the Hunter-Gatherer Hypothesis and point to a new venue for further research on this issue.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129512888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional optimization techniques have significant limitations on solving the problems of sewer optimal design. Because as a high-dimensional discrete complex optimization problem, sewer optimal design is characterized by its discrete objective function and, as an integer discrete variable, its decision variable amount keeps the same pace with engineering scales. Over the last decade, various kinds of modern bionic optimization algorithms with their special advantages have been created and applied into sewer optimal design successfully. Based on previous studies, this paper analyses and compares the solution performances of Genetic Algorithms (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Algorithms (ACA) from the three aspects respectively, they are convergence, speed and complexity of algorithm. The research result shows that compared with the other two algorithms, the ACA manifests its superiority for better convergence, satisfactory speed and relatively small algorithm complexity, which are very suitable for solving the problems of sewer optimal design.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128325431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particle filtering has proven very successful for non-linear and non-Gaussian estimation problems. The paper presents a method for occlusion detection for object tracking with adaptive evolutionary particle filter. Firstly, object occlusion is detected with normalization factor. Secondly, adaptive transition function is employed to recovery from occlusion. Thirdly, an adaptive evolutionary method is employed to handle particle degeneracy problem. The measurement could be done automatically, and the final results could be exported or printed as a complete report. In the present study, the behavioral despair test including forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) were done in the mice with the help of VTAS. The clinical antidepressant, paroxetine hydrochloride tablet, was used as a model drug to test the parameters and to validate the reliability of the VTAS. After administration of model drug, the gross immobility time reduced significantly as compared to the vehicle control group. The results obtained from the VTAS were consistent with previous reports. Based on these data, the novel video-tracking analysis system, described in this study, provides a reliable, accurate, convenience, and inexpensive tool for the test of behavioral despair in rats or mice.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129365169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In literature there are plenty different methods produced for detecting network anomalies and the process of anomaly detection is one of the major topics that computer science is working on. In this work, a classification method is introduced to perform this discrimination based on Self Organizing Network (SOM) classifier. Also, rather than proving well-known abilities of SOM on classification, our main concern in this work was investigating effects of Principal Component Analysis on quality of feature vectors. In order to signify the power of success, KDD Cup 1999 dataset is used. KDD Cup dataset is a common benchmark for evaluation of intrusion detection techniques. The dataset consists of several components and here, it is used ‘10% corrected’ test dataset. Since the feature vectors obtained from the dataset have prominent impact of success on the method, the usage of PCA and a method of choosing reliable components are introduced. At the end it is mentioned that the success of decision by the proposed method has been improved. In order to clarify this improvement, a detailed comparison of changing number of principal components on the success of decision mechanism is given.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129598272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, lowering the fuel consumption cost is the measure of satisfaction of the railway company and shortening the total passenger-time is being regarded as the passenger satisfaction criterion. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional mathematical optimization method in arriving at local optimum and dimension disasters, etc., we introduce the chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) technique into the train scheduling for double-track railroad planning for the first time, from which the supreme scheme is generated. A case on the train scheduling optimal planning problem is presented to illustrate the methodology’s feasibility and efficiency, compared with the existing optimal planning methods, the search time of the particle swarm optimization method is shorter.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128969942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is unlike a verificative modeling system where existing (human) thoughts are placed and connected together. In this regard, explorative mind-maps change their size continuously, being adaptive with connectionist cells inside; mind-maps process data input incrementally and offer lots of possibilities to interact with the user through an appropriate communication interface. With respect to a cognitive motivated situation like a conversation between partners, mind-maps become interesting as they are able to process stimulating signals whenever they occur. If these signals are close to an own understanding of the world, then the conversational partner becomes automatically more trustful than if the signals do not or less match the own knowledge scheme. In this (position) paper, we therefore motivate explorative mind-maps as a cognitive engine and propose these as a decision support engine to foster trust.","PeriodicalId":235382,"journal":{"name":"2009 Fifth International Conference on Natural Computation","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132022780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
