With potential impacts reaching into livelihood systems that have sectors highly climate-sensitive – considering sectors like agriculture, fishing, and tourism – it is increasingly becoming recognized that climate hazards pose a potential threat to livelihoods in a significant way. This paper attempts to establish a statistical relationship between climate hazards – from flooding to droughts to cyclones – and vulnerability, focusing specifically on the socio-economic dimensions. Using regional and sectoral data from the Government and International Organizations, e.g., World Bank, UNDP, we construct an index of livelihood vulnerability, which incorporates some economic indicators such as income, employment, and access to social safety nets. Its patterns of resilience and susceptibility are outlined by statistical tools like regression analysis and factor analysis. While some sectors have become resilient because of governmental interventions and diversified income streams, there still exist other regions that remain vulnerable because of their poor adaptive capacity. Recommendations for policy with respect to improvements in resilience and reductions in vulnerability are offered, and based on the focus of this paper, it stresses the necessity of both integrated disaster management and socioeconomic planning.

These are also the very reasons motivating successive incumbent governments of Nigeria to initiate one type of agricultural intervention program or another to generate employment, attain food security, and aid in poverty reduction. The study assesses the effectiveness of agricultural extension services in reducing poverty among fish farmers in the coastal region of Ondo State, Nigeria. A well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents and simple random sampling technique was used in selecting 80 respondents. Data collected was analyzed using frequency counts and percentage while Chi-square and Pearson product moment correlation was used for testing the hypotheses. Results of the socioeconomic characteristics show that more than half (58.7%) of the respondents were adults, male (68.7%), married (78.8%), literate (92.5%), having household size of <7 members (92.5%), earned an annual income of <#1,000,000 (73.7%), and having fish farming experience of <5 years (41.2%). Further analysis shows that catfish is mostly farmed by the respondents in the study area (72.5%), belong to one social group or the other (52.5%), and have access to agricultural extension agents (100%). Similarly, the study findings shows that all the respondents (100%) have access to all the different types of services rendered and the different types of agricultural extension services were rendered to the fish farmers which include technology transfer (93%), information and support services (90%), food safety and quality (89%), marketing and distribution (75%), sustainable fisheries (88%), credit and finance (96%), safety measures (100%), training to fish farmers (97%), input supply (88%), and technical expertise (92%). Furthermore, the types of agricultural extension services utilized by the fish farmers include information and support services (100%), food safety and quality (100%), credit and finance (100%), safety measures (100%), input supply (85%), and technical expertise (100%). Types of constraints militating effective utilization of agricultural extension service rendered identified by the fish farmers include weak linkages of research and training centers with extension workers and users (82%), lack of properly qualified/trained extension personal (100%), inadequate number of grass root workers (98%), lack of clear extension strategies (85%), emphasis on welfare than development (88%), much emphasis on technology than its transfer to end users (75%), inadequate infrastructure facilities (80%), and of the respondents and lack of incentives for field staff (100%). There was positive and significant relationships between respondents’ age (r=0.532; p≤0.05), number of years spent schooling (r=0.589; p≤0.05), household size (r=0.117; p≤0.05), annual income (r=0.515; p≤0.05), fi

This can be initiated by various factors, including moisture stress, high or low temperature, day length, hormonal imbalance, and heredity. Breaking of tuber dormancy is therefore important for seed potato multiplication, rapid post-harvest disease testing, and early production in the field or green house. Cytokinin (CK) and gibberellin (GA) in combination will terminate dormancy and increase sprout growth earlier than using GAs alone. And also using only CK will terminate dormancy earlier than using GAs alone, but subsequent sprout growth will be hampered. In this review, the current knowledge and possible utilization of CK and GA, which can be used for termination of dormancy and sprout growth of potato tubers, have been reviewed and discussed. The role of CK and GA to mitigate the harmful effects of endogenous and environmental stresses in potato sprouting is also examined. In addition, numerous biochemical and physiological processes principal to improved potato sprouting under the consequence of these hormones are discoursed in detail.

The objective of this study was to test growth and yield components for evaluating the salt tolerance of wheat genotypes. Five genotypes of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were used in this study, that differ from their salt tolerance, which were grown in 28 dS/m saline soil, and irrigated by well water with a salinity 7.5 dS/m. The results showed that salt concentration in the soil was reduced with plant growth stages from 28 dS/m before sowing to 8, 7.5, and 7.6 dS/m for N1, N2, and N3 genotypes, respectively. Whereas approached 16 and 17 dS/m for Tumos2 and Mexipak, cultivars, respectively, at the maturity stage. Concerning germination percentage under saline conditions, wheat genotypes N1, N2, and N3 showed the highest percentages of 89, 90, and 90%, respectively, which was significantly different than wheat cultivars Tumos2 and Mexipak 79 and 83%, respectively. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that genotype N2 required a maximum days for germination 14 days, whereas cultivarTumos2 required less days for germination 12 days. For spikes formation duration growth the genotype N3 was the late 119 days, whereas for physiological maturity N1 genotype was the latest 153 days. The number of spikes per 6 m2, grains spike-1, and grain weight were reduced significantly in sensitive cultivars Tumos2 and Mexipak. Higher grain yield with N2 genotype 2739.43 g with no significant differences with the genotypes N1 and N2, and with significant differences with the rest sensitive cultivars Tumos2 and Mexipak 346.61 and 242.98 g, respectively. Therefore, we conclude that the measurements of growth and yield components may be effective criteria for screening wheat genotypes for salt tolerance. Moreover, N1, N2, and N3 genotypes were identified as the most salt-tolerant genotypes in this study, they can be utilized through appropriate selection and breeding programs for further improvement in salt tolerance of Iraqi wheat genotypes.

Multistage sampling procedures were employed to select woredas, sample kebeles, and respondents, in which two districts were selected by purposive sampling technique; stratified purposive techniques were employed to select nine sample kebeles, and purposive random sampling techniques were used to select a total of 385 respondents. Pretested structured questionnaire and focused group discussion were employed to generate data. All generated survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of SPSS 16. Broody hens were the sole means of egg incubation and chick brooding. Broody hens are selected based on plumage color, egg yield, body weight (size), and mothering ability. Eggs laid at home were the predominant sources of incubation and were selected mainly based on egg type, egg age, and egg size. Clay pots, plastic, bamboo cages, and cartons were used as egg-setting materials, and grasses, straws, cotton seeds, feathers of broody hens, and clothes were used as bedding materials. October–December was the most preferred while July–September was the worst months of the year to incubate eggs and to achieve the best hatchability eggs. Environmental temperature, lack of proper laying nests, and post handling were the critical causes of the failure of egg hatchability in the study area. The total number of eggs incubated using a novel nest was 16 eggs. A comparatively high number of chicks were hatched during the second phase (7–12) from the number of eggs set. There is a strong need for training of chicken producers in increasing hatchability performances through the preparation of proper brooding nest or laying nest, egg selection, feeding, housing, health care, proper post handling, and chick management to increase their economic returns. Community-based holistic improvement programs are also very imperative to design to improve the genetic potential through selective breeding and conservation of the indigenous chicken genetic resources. Further research on hatchability performance evaluation of the indigenous chickens both on-farm and station as well as the effect of the 12 months of the year on incubation and hatchability of eggs.

However, its limited value addition activities and poor collaboration between chain actors affect the entire chain. This study was conducted in Abuna Gindeberet district to map honey value chain, identify existing market channel and role of actors across the chain. Both primary and secondary (published and unpublished sources) data were collected. Totally 150 honey producer were selected using pre-tested structured questionnaire; and key informant interview for Traders and consumers; and focus group discussion used. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, aspects of value chain and STATA. Major honey actors include input suppliers, producers, collectors, wholesalers, processors, and consumers. Wholesalers are the main honey value chain governor and producer position in price negotiation and product quality definition is not good. Among producers 7.33% and 65.33% conduct upgrading using honey extractor and storing, respectively. Six market channels were identified and channel was the largest (volume) and channel IV is the longest. Thus, it was highly recommended to improve the inter-linkage to improve whole honey value chain actors and market channel from production to consumption.

Therefore losses are recorded along its production chain value. Post-harvest loss is a major problem limiting the production of plantain in African due to unavailability of established storage conditions that can guarantee long shelf life. In the quest of extending the shelf life and quality of plantain, this study was carried out to evaluate the synergistic effect of Evaporative cooling system (ECS) and Potassium permanganate (KMnO4).\u0000Methods: Unripe plantain fruit were stored under four different condition, ECS, KMnO4 only, ECS with KMnO4 and a control. The storage was done for a period of 12 days with laboratory analysis carried out through this period to analyze the quality of the stored fruits. The pH, weight loss, Total soluble solid (TSS), peel color, Total titratable acid, firmness test and dry matter was carried out.\u0000Result: The pH, which is a major factor in determining the degree of ripening of fruit was obtained to be 4.85, 4.94, 5.00 and 5.77 for control, KMnO4, ECS and ECS with KMnO4 storage condition respectively. Also, the TSS which is also directly proportional to the degree of ripeness was recorded to be 24.00, 21.00, 12.10 and 10.80 for control, KMnO4, ECS and ECS with KMnO4 storage condition respectively. The least percentage weight loss was obtained in ECS with KMnO4 storage condition which is favorable to a better firmness result. 31%, 15.13% and 11.11% weight loss was obtained in control, KMnO4 and ECS storage condition. After day 6 of storage, the plantain fruits in ECS and ECS with KMnO4 ¬¬storage condition maintained their stage 1 characteristics as different from what was obtainable in control and KMnO4 storage. At the end of the storage period, the quality of the stored plantain fruits stored in ECS with KMnO4 was examined to be better in color, firmness, weight loss, pH, TSS and dry matter.\u0000Conclusion: When compared to the individual performances of KMnO4 and ECS, it can be concluded that the synergistic effect further extend the shelf life and quality of plantain fruits.

The trend of potato production has been toward greater acreage in warm climates using cultivars that were developed for production in cool climates. However, low land tropical regions are characterized by high temperatures that limit successful potato cultivation. High temperatures in potato promote haulm growth and suppress tuber production, whereas disbudding and paclobutrazol have the opposite effect, promoting tuber production and reducing the growth of the haulms by inhibiting GA biosynthesis which was increased by high temperature. In addition, the germplasm base for potato is large and assessments of germplasm performance under challenging conditions have revealed new possibilities.
