Materials and Methods: Whole blood ionized calcium and serum total calcium levels of 500 individuals aged between 20-60 years were retrospectively screened. Individuals were divided into hypoalbuminemia and normoalbuminemia groups according to their serum albumin concentrations. In these groups, the diagnostic performance of total calcium and ionized calcium concentrations calculated by Zeisler,Butler and Hanna methods in terms of hypocalcemia were examined. While determining hypocalcemia, ionized calcium level was accepted as a reference.The difference and correlation between directly measured ionized calcium and calculated ionized calcium were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed ranks and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The ionized calcium levels calculated by the Zeisler,Butler, Hanna methods were higher than the directly measured ionized calcium level. The method with the highest sensitivity and accuracy in terms of hypocalcemia was the Zeisler method.However, the specificity and negative predictive values were low.There was no correlation between directly measured ionized calcium and calculated ionized calcium levels in the hypoalbuminemia group. A significant correlation was observed between ionized calcium and calcium levels calculated by the Zeisler and Hanna methods in the normoalbuminemia group,but this correlation was low. No correlation was observed between ionized calcium and calcium calculated by Butler's method. Conclusion : The results of the study limit the use of the Zeisler,Butler and Hanna methods in estimating ionized calcium. We believe that it would not be reliable to comment on the level of ionized calcium with these methods.","PeriodicalId":23509,"journal":{"name":"Van Medical Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82607131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aimed to predict relapse among pediatric acute leukemia patients in remission by using complete blood parameters which are used routinely in clinical practice. Materials and Methods : The data of 279 children diagnosed with acute leukemia in our clinic over a 20-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Fourty two children relapsed and 37 children non-relapsed acute leukemia cases, all of whose data were available, were included in the study. Blood count parameters and physical examination findings at the time of diagnosis and during the follow-up were evaluated retrospectively in all patients. Mann-Whitney U and T-test were used for comparison of numerical variables. Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. Results: In the relapse group; twenty-four children were diagnosed with B-cell ALL, 10 children with T-cell ALL, and eight children with AML. In non-relapse group; 26 children had B-cell ALL, 10 children were diagnosed with T-cell and one child had AML. Thrombocytopenia was observed in 24 patients for the relapse group, compared to nine children in non-relapse group. After remission, the risk of relapse was significantly higher in patients with thrombocytopenia than in patients without thrombocytopenia among both groups. During the remission period, relapse was observed in all patients with thrombocytopenia lasting for an average of 3.86 weeks. Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia during the remission period of pediatric acute leukemia patients can be explained primarily by the effect of chemotherapeutic drugs used in treatment and possible infections on the bone marrow. We demonstrated that the presence of thrombocytopenia which develops after the remission period and lasts longer than three weeks can be used as an easy-to-access blood parameter in the prediction of relapse.","PeriodicalId":23509,"journal":{"name":"Van Medical Journal","volume":"92 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83992803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we aimed to determine the medical professionalism attitudes of third-year medical students and to investigate the effect of gender, reason for preference, and presence of a doctor in the family on these attitudes. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 331 third-graders who volunteered. Data was collected in 17.02.2020. As data collection tools, the Penn State School of Medicine (PSCOM) professionalism questionnaire-student form and a short sociodemographic information form were used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) program. Results: The average age of stu dents was 21.45±2.00, and 168 (50.8%) of them were female. Average attitude scores are found as, for accountability 30.29 ± 4.19 (7-35), enrichment 24.88 ± 3.78 (6-30), equity 18.26 ± 2.12 (4-20), honor and integrity 36.37 ± 3.87 (8-40), altruism 13.11 ± 1.90 (3-15), duty 21.92 ± 2.80 (5-25), respect 9.05 ± 1.25 (2-10). Professional attitude scores of female students were higher than men's, students who chose the medical school for their ideal and to help people had significantly higher scores than students who preferred it for other reasons. No significant difference was found between attitude scores of students with and without the presence of a doctor in their family. Conclusion: Third-year medical students have a positive attitude towards professionalism. While gender and medical school preference were effective on these attitudes, the presence of doctors in the family was not found to be effective.","PeriodicalId":23509,"journal":{"name":"Van Medical Journal","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84685912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
