Serum chemistry analysis revealed multiple abnormalities, including hyperammonaemia, hyperbilirubinemia, hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia and hyperphosphataemia. Despite therapeutic intervention to address these abnormalities, the animal succumbed to the symptoms approximately 12 hours later. Histopathological examination revealed iron accumulation primarily in periportal hepatocytes. Infectious diseases were unlikely as the aetiology, given the minimal inflammation observed in the complete blood count and histopathology results, as well as a negative blood culture result. Therefore, we propose alloimmune disease as the suspected underlying cause, leading to hepatic siderosis in the gemsbok.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141870546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All littermates, except one, manifest severe postnatal mortality and displayed polydactyl at birth. Out of a litter of six puppies, only Luna survived, resulting in a mortality rate of approximately 83.33%. Luna, the surviving pup, presented with anomalies including polydactyly on both pelvic limbs, short limb development, double row teeth, thoracolumbar tenderness, anaemia and babesiosis. Furthermore, the dam also exhibited secondary infertility, which prompted a literature review on probable genetic influences. However, we suspect <jats:italic>SHH</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>ALX4</jats:italic> mutations due to their possible interference with sonic hedgehog and Wnt/beta‐catenin signalling pathways as being causal for the observed clinical signs, particularly the role of Wnt/beta‐catenin signalling, which is crucial for reproductive organ development.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141870678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radiographs were concerning for mineralised foreign body and peritonitis due to decreased serosal detail and mineral opacities not associated with the lumen of the intestines. An abdominal ultrasound confirmed the presence of a mass or foreign body with a scant amount of fluid in the caudal abdomen. A celiotomy was performed revealing a 3 cm diameter mass at the antimesenteric border of the jejunum with adhered omentum to the jejunal wall. Resection and anastomosis were performed, and the cat recovered uneventfully. The mass was found to be a ruptured jejunal diverticulum. To date, there are few congenital diverticula reported in cats, and to the authors’ knowledge, no previous reports of ruptured diverticula in cats.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transvenous electrical cardioversion is the preferred treatment for atrial fibrillation in those horses where medical therapy is either unsuccessful or unacceptable. Transvenous electrical cardioversion's main drawback is the necessity for general anaesthesia. This case series documents the details of three horses that were managed for sustained atrial fibrillation via transvenous electrical cardioversion procedures. In each case, the anaesthesia was maintained with the use of propofol and medetomidine intravenous infusions, which has not been previously reported for use in horses undergoing transvenous electrical cardioversion. Two of the horses were successfully converted without significant complications. One horse was unable to be converted after nine defibrillation attempts; however, anaesthesia was stable in all horses despite the concurrent use of antiarrhythmic drugs. No animal required inotropic support. Propofol‐based protocols were safely utilised for three anaesthetics for transvenous electrical cardioversion with encouraging cardiovascular stability.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, lithiasis stands as the primary cause, followed by ureteral strictures. Clinical manifestations in affected cats are often nonspecific, contingent upon the degree and laterality of obstruction, with azotaemia being a prominent consequence. This study aims to document a surgical intervention employing a double J catheter in a cat presenting with ureteral obstruction. A 12‐year‐old, male cat presented with anuria, sporadic vomiting, weight loss and anorexia. Laboratory exams revealed severe azotaemia, corroborated by ultrasonography displaying a pseudocyst and signs indicative of ureteral obstruction. Consequently, hospitalisation ensued with exploratory laparotomy surgery. During the procedure, a left nephrectomy became necessary. Utilisation of the double J catheter in the right ureter was pivotal, alongside right ureteral transposition and catheter insertion for peritoneal dialysis. After surgery, peritoneal dialysis commenced promptly. A significant reduction in azotaemia was observed by the end of hospitalisation, along with normal urination and spontaneous feeding. The efficacy of employing the double J ureteral catheter was evident in restoring urinary flow and expediting the patient's recovery period, as evidenced by the data presented.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computed tomography revealed a large ovoid encapsulated lesion, with a gas and fluid attenuating centre, and an intralesional mineral opacity. The lesion ran close to the caudal oesophagus, and extended cranially within the pulmonary parenchyma. Endoscopy revealed a communication between the lumen of the distal oesophagus and the lesion, which contained a purulent discharge and plant material. Based on the computed tomography and endoscopic findings, the diagnosis was expected to be a thoracic abscess, secondary to foreign body migration or penetration; however, surgical resection and histopathological analysis of the lesion revealed an oesophageal adenocarcinoma. This case details the unusual presentation of an oesophageal adenocarcinoma, with endoscopic and computed tomography findings that mimicked a thoracic abscess with an intralesional foreign body.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cat was treated successfully with prednisolone and cyclosporine. The necessity to perform a bone marrow biopsy should be highlighted in this case, as the diagnosis of precursor‐targeted immune‐mediated anaemia and immune‐mediated neutropenia was based on bone marrow sampling, exclusion of infectious disorders and response to immunosuppressive medications.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was confirmed with histopathology. This degree of invasion in the ventricles by an oligodendroglioma has not been reported and indicates that oligodendrogliomas should be included as a differential diagnosis for intraventricular tumours with bilateral, contiguous invasion of the ventricular system.","PeriodicalId":23496,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Record Case Reports","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141782089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on clinical examination, all three patients were diagnosed with quadriceps contracture and surgical treatment was recommended. Following surgical release of the soft tissue adhesions, a dynamic apparatus was placed. The device consisted of two loops of suture acting as anchor points at the ischiatic tuberosity and the calcaneus tuberosity connected by a rubber band. The apparatus forced the stifle joint into full flexion when the patients were resting while allowing some degree of extension. All three cases were successfully treated, with only minor complications reported.
