Vitamin D toxicity, even if it is rare, occurs when serum concentrations exceed 150 ng/mL and is usually manifested by hypercalcemia phenomena. Case report We hereby report a case of two twin sisters who self-medicated with vitamin D in a dose of 4 × 4,000 IU/day for almost 10 months as a method of ‘protection’ against COVID-19, influenced by mass media advertising. The patients presented to the emergency department with hypervitaminosis D-related symptoms such as hypertension, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diffuse abdominal pain. Laboratory investigations revealed high levels of vitamin D and calcium. Conclusions Vitamin D toxicity can lead to difficulties in positive and differential diagnosis because of the multiple complications of hypercalcemia.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135532882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study aimed to individualize the treatment protocols for episodic and chronic migraine in order to reduce the duration, frequency, and severity of attacks, as well as the disability associated with migraine by comparing monotherapy and dual therapy. Materials and Methods We conducted a prospective observational study between February 2019 and July 2021. Patients were diagnosed with migraine based on simplified diagnostic criteria. Episodic migraine was present in 62% and chronic migraine in 38% of cases. Disability due to headache was assessed using the Migraine Disability Assessment Score (MIDAS) questionnaire. Prophylactic therapy was individualized, with 210 patients receiving monotherapy (propranolol, flunarizine, or valproic acid) and 190 patients receiving dual therapy (propranolol and flunarizine, or valproic acid and flunarizine). Disability at baseline was graded from I to IV, and improvement after treatment was graded as no recurrence of headache, grade I, grade II, and grade III. Results After 2–3 months of therapy, we observed significant improvement in the form of reduction in the frequency of attacks and reduction of disability. Patients with grade II disability who received dual therapy showed 100% improvement with no recurrence of headaches. Treatment with valproic acid resulted in no recurrence in 100% of patients with grade I and 85.7% of patients with grade II disability scores. Significant improvement was observed in all grades of disability with dual therapy. Conclusion Dual prophylactic therapy was more efficient than monotherapy in reducing the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms in grade III and grade IV patients.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135532884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the modifications linked to drug-induced gingivitis such as changes in color, volume, and consistency, and the clinical signs of periodontal disease. Materials and methods The study was based on a questionnaire made up of 14 questions, formulated using colloquial language to increase addressability. Results The most frequently used drugs were beta-blockers (37%), calcium channel blockers (33%), followed by anticonvulsants (18%), oral contraceptives (8%) and cyclosporine (4%). Color changes occurred in 81% of anticonvulsant treatments and 57% of oral contraceptives. Increases in the gingival volume were higher with anticonvulsants (73%) followed by cyclosporine (67%). Gingival consistency was higher with anticonvulsant treatments (90%), followed by calcium channel blockers (60%). Gingival changes and gingival bleeding during brushing were higher with anticonvulsant treatments, followed by beta-blocker medication. Spontaneous gingival bleeding had a higher prevalence in anticonvulsant treatments, followed by cyclosporine. Conclusions The patients most affected by gingival enlargement were those under hydantoin treatment, followed by cyclosporine. Calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers had similar effects on gingival pathology. The intensity of the pathological changes that occurred secondary to the administration of these drugs was influenced by the dose, the duration of the treatment, and the association of several drugs. Early detection and management of gingival enlargement is important in order to allow patients to continue with their therapy, and also to increase their quality of life.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135532863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim: To determine the values of C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with different stages of CKD and to examine how they change depending on the progression of renal damage. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive comparative study included 157 subjects at different stages of CKD which was assessed based on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) calculated according to the MDRD equation. CRP was analyzed by an immunoturbidimetric method. NLR and PLR were calculated by a mathematical calculation after a blood count was performed. Results: The present study showed an increase in serum creatinine, CRP, and NLR values with progression of renal failure. There was a statistically significant difference in the creatinine and CRP concentrations between groups with different stages of CKD (p <0.001 for all comparisons). A significant positive correlation was found between NLR and CRP, while negative, significant correlations were observed between NLR and eGFR as well as between PLR and eGFR. There was a slight increase in PLR value with the progression of renal impairment, but the correlation between PLR and CRP was not significant. Conclusion: These results suggest that NLR, together with CRP, may serve as an indicator of systemic low-grade inflammation progression in patients with CKD. Larger prospective studies are required to observe the possibility of using NLR as a surrogate marker for CRP in patients with CKD.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124909017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the early stages, they are asymptomatic; however, as they grow in size, they begin to produce symptoms, most often due to the compressive effects they exert on surrounding structures. In the early stages, they are frequently diagnosed by ultrasonography, but complicated cases or cystadenofibromas that reach giant dimensions are ideally evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to establish a therapeutic surgical decision that is as safe as possible for the patient. Case report: We present the case of a 49-year-old perimenopausal patient without vaginal bleeding or other gynecological symptoms who presented to the hospital with abdominal pain and abdominal distension with increasing intensity. Ultrasound examination revealed the presence of a high volume of fluid in the abdomen, and MRI and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a giant left ovarian type III seromucinous cystadenofibroma. The patient was treated surgically, with favorable postoperative evolution. Conclusion: Giant cystadenofibromas are rare clinical entities that must always be considered in the differential diagnosis of an abdominopelvic pathology in middle-aged female patients and should ideally be investigated by MRI to accurately define their origin, characteristics, and local invasion.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128651269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have shown an association between sarcopenia and various poor short-term outcomes in cancer patients who underwent surgery. In this case study, we sought to highlight the importance of a modern prognostic factor, the psoas muscle index (PMI), in colorectal cancer. Case Presentation: We present the case of a 59-year-old male patient with sigmoid cancer. We calculated the PMI as the sum of the areas of the left and right psoas muscle at the level of the L3 vertebra, divided by the square of the patient’s height, using computed tomography measurements. We also measured the density of the proas muscles. Prior to surgery, the left psoas muscle had an area of 14.52 cm2, and the right 14.54 cm2, with a PMI of 9.4967 cm2/m2. The mean density of the psoas muscles was 43.60 UH. The surgery consisted in a rectosigmoid resection with termino-terminal colorectal anastomosis. The histopathological examination confirmed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, stage IIIB (pT3N1M0). The patient left the hospital eight days after surgery in good general condition. Long-term follow-up was performed by phone and CT scans at 1, 6, and 12 months. Conclusions: CT-measured PMI may be a potential prognostic imaging marker in patients with colorectal cancer that can be easily and routinely assessed preoperatively.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127384394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity of Chu’s device and to measure the correlation between the width and length of the frontal teeth, attempting to identify the application of the proportion gauge in Mureș county. Materials and methods: From the 142 selected patients, 73 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The height and width values of the participants’ teeth were measured with a digital caliper and evaluated with Chu’s esthetic proportion gauge. The measurements were then compared statistically. Results: The values obtained from the digital caliper measurements did not correlate with Chu’s proportion scale, and the results showed no significant differences between the two sides (p >0.05). Conclusions: In conclusion, the measured teeth ratios did not show a similarity with the predetermined esthetic proportion scale suggested by Chu.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133783391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) are frequently associated with hypertension. The aim of the study was the assessment of vitamin D status in elderly hypertensive patients with metabolic comorbidities with/without statin therapy, in relation to body mass index (BMI) and lipid profile parameters. Material and methods: The study group included 89 hypertensive patients (61 statin-treated) admitted to the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Clinical Hospital in Târgu Mureș between 2019 and 2021. Vitamin D levels were measured by ELISA method, lipid profile parameters by photometric procedures. Calculated values were LDL-cholesterol and BMI. Results: Obesity and DM were present in association with hypertension in 51% of the subjects. A total of 89% of the enrolled hypertensive patients had hypovitaminosis D. Average serum vitamin D of the studied subjects was 14.27 ± 11.96 ng/mL. No significant difference was obtained in vitamin D levels depending on gender, the presence/absence of statin therapy, and DM as a comorbidity. A negative correlation was seen between serum HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations (r = –0.3988, p = 0.0008) and between HDL levels and BMI (r = –0.3114, p = 0.0475). Conclusions: Suboptimal vitamin D levels were present in the majority of the studied hypertensive patients regardless of the statin therapy, which reveals the importance of concomitant assessment of vitamin D levels, especially in elderly subjects presenting chronic metabolic comorbidities.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126846580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is evidence that in time, external and internal cycle misalignment leads to severe health consequences, resulting in the development of cardiometabolic disturbances. Desynchronized hormonal fluctuations along with daily specific macronutrient utilization patterns are also discussed, which by consequence, are all predictors of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this paper is to provide insight on the circadian clock’s organization throughout the human body and to explain the underlying genetic background. By understanding these well-established molecular mechanisms and processes, we believe this paper will provide accuracy regarding the importance of the circadian clock’s integrity and will highlight its role in the etiopathology of cardiometabolic syndrome.","PeriodicalId":234618,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Interdisciplinary Medicine","volume":"453 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125787195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
