Some preliminary principles of the structure design are concluded for heaters working in vacuum or in atmosphere. According to the principles, an optimized heater structure is demonstrated, and the coupled thermal-electrical finite element method (ANSYS) is employed to simulate the structures. Experimental results indicated that the temperature distributions are quite in agreement with the simulations with large uniform-temperature area.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116215390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The DACS conventionally utilizes relative strength between the DEP and drag forces. While the conventional cell separators usually depend on different size of cells, the new system differentiates similarly-sized cells by the difference of the electrical properties among cells. It distinguished different types of cells by their differences in electrical properties, conductivity and permittivity. Thus, continuously varying DEP forces generated by the system enabled us to separate MCF10A cells (normal cells derived from human breast epithelium) and MCF7 cells (human breast cancer cells) that have similar sizes. Applying the newly-developed system to separate two different cells, it was possible to separate cancer cells among normal cells.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116320067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since conventional approaches to structured light system depend on unrealistic assumptions about a workspace, such as absent of reflection or discontinuous, a depth image may collapse in a real home environment when the workspace has specular objects reflecting the active signal to the environment. In order to handle erroneous data caused by reflection and blurring, we used a two cameras and one projector system. The geometric constraint among them has been analyzed and applied to an error detection and correction procedure. The system achieves pixel correspondences not only within epipolar lines but also between epipolar lines efficiently. The experimental results have shown that the proposed system significantly enhances the robustness in depth imaging, compared to the conventional approaches. The proposed approach opens a greater feasibility of applying structured light based depth imaging in a cluttered workspace for home service robots.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"os-54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127716542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ultrasonic metal welding (USMW) was used to integrate nickel embedded thin film thermocouple (TFTC) units into copper workpieces. The embedded TFTCs successfully survived the welding tests, validating that USMW is a viable method to integrate micro sensors to metallic tool materials. Moreover, the embedded micro sensors were also able to measure the transient temperature in situ at 50 mum directly beneath the welding interface during welding. Metal embedded micro sensors yield great potential to improve fundamental understanding of numerous manufacturing processes by providing in-situ sensing data with high spatial and temporal resolution at critical locations.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128031402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip was fabricated onto glass substrate using standard soft lithography. Three types of polyurethane acrylate (PUA) nanostructure (50 nm pillar, 50 nm perpendicular groove, 50 nm horizontal groove with respect to the direction of flow) were included inside the microfluidic channel by UV-assisted capillary molding. For cell types, MCF7 (breast cancer cell line) and MCF10A (breast normal cell line) were used. To find the optimum condition for separation, each cell line was injected into the microfluidic device and cultured for 1 h, 2 h, and 3 h, respectively, followed by cell detachment by flow of medium solution with increasing flow rate. The adhesion force of MCF10A was stronger than that of MCF7. MCF10A cells cultured onto the nanopatterned surface were more spread than those cultured onto the glass surface. Furthermore, the presence of nanopatterns increased the ratio of adhesion force of normal and cancer cells and thus and the separation efficiency. The optimum culture condition was 2 h onto the nanopattern and flow rate was ~ 300 mul/min.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128128460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Structural and morphological characterization has been carried out by means of SEM, XRD and TEM in order to correlate structural properties with gas sensing behavior. The sensors were tested for CO sensing at room temperature with CO concentrations in the range of 100-500 ppm. In comparisons to PANI prepared by solvent casting technique with no CNT inclusion, the sensitivity of the nanofiber composite was increased by more than two orders of magnitude and response/recovery times were reduced by more than the factor of 3. The results, therefore, suggest that the electro spun PANI/PVA composite of CNT in MA-doped. PANI is a promising method for achieving a conductive polymer gas sensor with good sensitivity, fast response, low-concentration detection and room-operating-temperature capability.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122271017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In real world the odor distribution are changing over time and multi peaks especially in obstacle environments. The purpose of developing this environment is to bridge the gap between the very complex hard to understand real-world problem (odor dispersion model) and all too simple toy problems (dynamic bit matching or moving parabola). Modified particle swarm optimization is a well-known algorithm, which can continuously track a changing optimum over time. We will adopt two types of PSO modification concepts to develop a new algorithm in order to control autonomous vehicles to solve odor source localization in real world environment. Firstly, PSO can be improved or adapted by incorporating the change detection and responding mechanisms for solving dynamic problems. Secondly, charged PSO, which is another extension of the PSO, has also been applied to solve dynamic problems. In order to control autonomous vehicles in more realistic condition from the viewpoint of robotic, where a speed limitation of the robot behavior and collision avoidance mechanism should be taken into consideration as well as the effect of noise and threshold value for the odor sensor response, also positioning error of GPS sensor of robot. Simulations illustrate that the new approach can solve such dynamic environment in advection-diffusion odor model problems even though in obstacle environments.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121764997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To widen the viscosity measurement range of more classical microcantilever-based viscometers, the frequency spectrum of a vibrating microcantilever is studied instead of restricting the focus to shifts in resonant frequency and quality factor measurements. Results of experiments are presented to validate that, even if no resonant phenomenon occurs, viscosity measurements are possible. The same approach can be used for the determination of viscoelastic properties of complex fluids. To this end, a new analytical model has been developed and the preliminary measurements are encouraging for the development of a microrheometer on a chip.","PeriodicalId":233838,"journal":{"name":"2006 5th IEEE Conference on Sensors","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115968597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our preliminary experiment indicated even economical L1 C/A 1.5 GHz civil GPS receivers can create enough precise database of ground feature blockage, if only two statistical parameters the author proposed are adequately set. Integrating the series of the author group's efforts on this research field, it is expected feasible to develop an automatic database creation system in cooperation with the government and the civil vehicles with low cost civil GPS receivers.
