It offers better machining efficiency and superior shaping capability compared with 3-axis machining. Machining error control is considered to be a challenging task in 5-axis flank milling of complex geometries. Previous studies have shown that optimized tool path planning is a feasible approach to reduction of the machining error. However, the error estimation is very time-consuming in the optimization process, thus limiting the practicality of the approach. In this work, we apply GPU computing technology to solve this problem. A PSO-based optimization scheme is developed to generate a series of cutter locations corresponding to a globally minimized machining error. The error induced by each cutter location is simultaneously calculated by the parallel processing units in GPU. This significantly accelerates the search process in the optimization scheme, while the optimal solution remains the same as that obtained by CPU. Our test result demonstrates the potential of improving the computational efficiency in CAD/CAM using GPU.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132763752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tooth trajectory of a milling cutter is a combination of two motions, one is the rotation of the cutter spindle and the other is the feed motion of the cutter relative to work-piece. For simplification traditional chip thickness models always simplify the tooth trajectory as a circle to get approximate results. In this paper, modeling of true tooth trajectory in linear, arc and profile end milling processes is studied. And mathematical expresses for entry and exit angles of tooth, feed per tooth along cutter contact path are derived for undeformed chip thickness modeling. The instantaneous chip thickness of each process based on circular tooth trajectory model is analyzed as well for comparison. Cutting forces under different chip thickness models are also predicted to study the effect of tooth trajectory on milling process simulation.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133335005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Magnesium is considered to be a potential implant material for biodegradable orthopaedic applications because of its inherent beneficial properties including superior biocompatibility, biodegrability and proper mechanical properties. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is a laser aided layer by layer technique which enables the quick fabrication of solid metallic parts virtually of any geometry, based on a computer design. This paper focuses on the SLM of pure magnesium powders using a Nd:YAG laser under different processing conditions. The results show that magnesium parts are successfully fabricated, which indicates opportunity for magnesium orthopaedic implants to be achieved through SLM technique.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133759527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exact algorithms for a DPFSP’s solution can be extremely computationally costly. This paper proposes to apply an electromagnetism-like mechanism (EM) algorithm as a heuristic solution method to a DPFSP. To fit into the discrete domain of a DPFSP, modifications to the original EM algorithm, including redefinition of distance and movement and of charge and force calculation, have been made, to improve the performance of the proposed algorithm, a VNS local search mechanism employing the concept of the critical factory has been devised. The experimental results show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the original EM algorithm. New best known solutions have been found to the Naderi’s DPFSP benchmark suite adapted from Tail lard instances.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122654146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes an analysis of relative weights of various factors for thrust fluctuations in permanent magnet synchronous linear motor (PMSLM) based on the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process, (FAHP). First, the paper analyzes the complexity of PMSLM and thrust fluctuations causes the relevance and variability, pointing out how to reduce the linear motor thrust fluctuation analysis of the existing problems. Then, the paper introduces the theory of fuzzy analytic hierarchy theory and its application characteristics and steps. Finally, the application of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process is proposed to analyze linear motor thrust fluctuation factor weights. The results show the end effect of the thrust fluctuations, the ripple disturbance, magnet distribution and cogging effects.
