Build orientation of an object using FDM is usually determined by the object’s structure after considering build feasibility, build efficiency, and build accuracy. In this paper, a novel object build orientation selection method in FDM is proposed based on the tensile strain of an object to be built. Test specimens with different build orientations are built with FDM to investigate the relationship between build orientation and allowed maximum tensile strain through tensile test experiments. Based on the relationship, golden section search is employed to determine the build orientation of an object consisting of multi-parts in order to get allowed maximum tensile strain. The build orientation of a truss is determined with the proposed method to verify its feasibility and reliability with satisfied results.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131680535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extrusion pressure increased as the solvent volume fraction decreased. Air bubbles and particle agglomeration influenced the final properties of the product and caused pressure to fluctuate. An aging process for the paste was introduced to obtain more even solvent distribution and hence deliver highly regular ceramic lattice structures.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"487 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122173096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To satisfy the requirement of customers with the advantages of an efficient flow line, some product variants are allowed to produce simultaneously on the same assembly line. This paper proposes a multi-agent based algorithm for a mixed-assembly line balancing problem (MALBP). The model is constructed by two-level agent architecture. In the first level, a planning agent is built to determine line cycle time based on customer demand. According to the cycle time, the ideal number of workstation is determined. In the second level, there are a balancing agent and multiple machine agents collaborating to balance the workloads of all workstations. The balancing agent records the task precedence constraints and the workload of each workstation, and calculates the efficiency of line balancing. Tabu search algorithm is applied as a communication mechanism between machine agents to adjust the workloads of all workstations. The primary objective is to minimize the number of workstation for a given cycle time, and secondary objective is to minimize the variance of the workload of workstations. In this paper, a workstation is viewed as an agent. Adjacent swap and insert mechanism is applied to search the neighborhood, and, furthermore, tabu list is used to avoid the solution trapped into local optimal.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115557980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 3-DOF micro-motion PKM has three linear-motion driving units, while the 3-DOF micro-motion PKM with actuator redundancy has four of these units. For both designs, the linear motion driving units are identical and both machines have the same passive link in the middle of the structure. The manipulator with actuator redundancy is designed to prevent singularity and to improve stiffness. The inverse kinematics and Jacobian of these two PKMs are analyzed, the stiffness properties are determined and global stiffness is optimized using genetic algorithm. A comparison of the global stiffness indicates that the 3-DOF micro motion PKM with actuator redundancy outperforms the one without actuator redundancy.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"19 20-22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123572038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The computer mouse, a critical human-machine interface device, still has very little choice in terms of end user customization even though mouse designs have branched away from a single design to multiple designs, types, and sizes. This paper proposes a co-design method for engineered products that can be parameterized and illustrates the application of the method for the customization of computer mice. An interactive co-design tool was developed that allows customers to customize the size and shape of a mouse to suit their needs. The tool also provides interfaces to manufacturing for 3-axis tool path generation and for additive manufacturing. Examples are presented to demonstrate the tool’s capabilities.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130109731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And the contact forces are calculated based on this contact model. To simplify the contact status, a contact model with spring-damper system is presented by considering the deformation of the work-piece in this paper. And the dynamic equations of the work-piece are formulated based on this dynamic contact model. The solution of the dynamic equations is finished in Adams, and the contact forces and driving forces are calculated. By compared with the contact forces of the gripping model, the regularity of dynamic contact forces is found out. This is helpful for the design and optimization of large-scale forging manipulators.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121579485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With increasingly powerful computers and highly precise measuring technologies, initial macro-scale volume fractions based FGM characterization has been extended to micro structural models, enabling more delicate and accurate description of FGMs in computer-aided design and analysis. This paper presents a new design approach to modeling porous structures with graded porosities and pore distributions. A novel digital model based on stochastic Voronoi diagram and B-Spline representation is proposed. Using such a model, generic porous structures with graded and irregularly shaped pores can be easily designed. The proposed approach is therefore useful for downstream model validations, simulations as well as micro structural optimizations.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"28 21","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134412500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most usual way to make electrically conductive patterns is coating a plastic part by a thin layer of metal. It’s well known the different procedures for metalizing plastic parts but most of them aim to obtain either aesthetic or functional metallic coating with high level of adherence, finishing and electrical conductivity if necessary. This aim requires complex process and time expense, however in the present research work only electrical conductivity is needed. This particular requirement allows to develop a simplified process of coating adapted to a specific target: electroforming starting from rapid prototyping (RP) metalized parts. Additive technologies based on extrusion such as Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) provide patterns or prototypes suitable to be metalized by electroless plating and to be used as patterns for making electroforming. A different behavior of ABS FDM parts has been found in terms of metalizing procedure. This paper is focused on the proposed simplified method of electroless plating for obtaining patterns with high level of electrical conductivity and reproducibility of original RP plastic part.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"641 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120883235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diverse materials with wider range of properties are needed in this process. To satisfy this requirement, multiple print heads on micro level fabrication are preferred to perform multi-material dispensing task. This paper proposes a micro dispensing system with two print heads (micro valve print head and piezoelectric print head), since each type of print head has advantages and limitations over the others in specific fabrication. This proposed system has demonstrated its capability for printing resistor and capacitor. The functionalities of these components are tested such as IV characterization for resistor, and frequency characteristics for printed capacitor, followed by a detailed discussion and in-depth analysis. Our experimental results have approved that micro DoD dispensing is a feasible way to fabricate passive electronic devices.","PeriodicalId":233469,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Manufacturing Automation","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123639262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
