We analyse in this work the descriptions of the islands found by the expeditionaries. The work focuses on the trend of the humanist who, following a very old line in the storytelling of travelling tales, insists above all on the striking, mysterious, strange and paradisiacal details of the islands. It seems that his aim is to marvel the reader. It is the mystery around the islands, especially if they are distant and unknown to the readers.\"","PeriodicalId":232761,"journal":{"name":"FORTUNATAE. Among the authors of the Roman literary canon who enjoy linguistic biculturalism, Claudian is one of the few to have verses in both Latin and Greek. The Gigantomachia, written in both languages, exposes the contextual characteristics of production, since it exhibits rhetorical techniques typical of the Second Sophistic. During the expansion of this cultural phenomenon, the use of different stylistic devices such as ekphrasis, which can be seen in the panegyric epic of the Egyptian poet, intensified. In view of the above, this paper will focus on the analysis of ekphrasis in the Latin Gigantomachia, not as a mere ornament but as a rhetorical figure that structures all the story, contributing emotionally to the vivid representation of the images according to the principles of epideictic rhetoric. The importance of the ekphrasis in the evolution of the late epic allows us to conceive of it as a genre in which the poetic voice suspends the narrative in order to divert attention from the whole to the brilliance of its parts, interweaving the different scenes of war through a variety of ekphrasis.","PeriodicalId":232761,"journal":{"name":"FORTUNATAE. Hence, this paper aims at discussing Glück’s psychoanalytic interpretation of the so-called Homeric Hymn to Demeter and «Persephone the Wanderer», a poem pertaining to Glück’s Averno (2006), attempting to demonstrate the appropriation of the myth of Demeter and Persephone from a psychoanalytic approach. After an introduction to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (Foley, 1994), and Louise Glück and her poem «Persephone the Wanderer», I will compare the myth of Demeter and Persephone in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter with Glück’s «Persephone the Wanderer». From a psychoanalytic perspective, Demeter’s psychological state will be addressed while pointing out her motherhood and her grief, and then I will associate the concept of narcissism to both Demeter and Hades in Glück’s poem and its impact on Persephone.","PeriodicalId":232761,"journal":{"name":"FORTUNATAE. EnglishThe present work deals with the discussion about the use of translation as a tool for the acquisition of a new language. Starting from a historical perspective it makes a brief journey through the teaching methods of Latin from the Renaissance to the present, focusing especially on the origin of the grammar-translation method in the XVIII century and its reformulation in contact with modern methods from the teaching classroom of foreign language (FL), giving rise to the current concept of pedagogical translation and its application in Latin classes. From this point on, a working method is proposed for classes at the university, in which pedagogical translation serves as a tool for the acquisition of linguistic and literary knowledge for a better understanding and hermeneutics of classical texts, and which is complemented by the knowledge and practice of literary translation.","PeriodicalId":232761,"journal":{"name":"FORTUNATAE.
