Tuberculosis of the hand and wrist is the rarest osteoarticular location after the shoulder. Diagnosing the tuberculosis wrist in its early stage poses a major challenge to the clinicians because of its atypical and vague presentations and a close resemblance to many relatively benign pathologies. This case report includes a 13-month-old child who presented with a progressive swelling of the wrist for one and a half months. Radiological and microbiological investigations were done and diagnosis of tubercular osteomyelitis of the distal radius was established. Management with anti-tubercular drugs was done and clinical and radiological follow-up was done until remission of the disease. Tuberculosis of the wrist is a rare manifestation and adequate treatment with anti-tubercular drugs could lead to clinical as well as radiological healing.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131054811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this case report, a case of post road traffic accident fracture of ulnar styloid with distal radioulnar joint disruption was operated with open reduction internal fixation with tension band wiring. Patient gained dorsiflexion of 90º at wrist, and 90º palmar flexion at wrist at 1 year follow-up with union of the bone. Follow-up was done using Mayo (wrist performance score) which was 65% at 6 weeks (satisfactory), and 95% (excellent) at 1 year. We concluded tension band wiring as a superior modality for management of ulnar styloid fractures.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"572 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134180166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is large volume of data present in the literature for neurocysticercosis. Tapeworm infections are common in developing countries where there is poor access to sanitation facilities and close interaction between humans and animals and where pigs are a major source of food. The isolated intramuscular involvement of cysticercosis is uncommon. Due to vague clinical presentation and unfamiliarity of clinicians with this entity, it is difficult to diagnose. The initial presentation mimics a soft tissue mass, but imaging arouses suspicion. Here, we report a case of Intramuscular Cysticercosis diagnosed by high resolution ultrasonography in a 25 year old male patient who presented with pain and swelling over the right forearm, without any associated neurological or ocular involvement. The patient responded well to the course of steroids and Albendazole with complete resolution of pain and swelling.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115491110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: Solated fibula fractures are very common injuries. Diagnostic exams must rule out ankle instability. Surgical treatment must be considered in the case of associated ankle instability. Risk factors for wound related complications must be considered when choosing the surgical technique. Materials and Methods: The study was performed at the Ravindra Nath Tagore Medical College and Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, Udaipur, in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The type of the study is prospective. Inclusion criteria are as follows: Age above 18 years/skeletally matured; distal fibula fractures with Weber B and Weber C type of Danis–Weber classification; X-ray (stress view) suggestive of associated syndesmotic injury; and patients willing to give consent and willing for follow-up. Exclusion criteria are as follows: Weber A type fractures; distal fibula fracture without syndesmotic injury; pediatric and skeletally immature patients; compound injuries; and patients unfit for surgery. The sample size was 25. Results: Twenty-five cases were operated and followed up. A total of 22 cases (85%) had an excellent outcome, and three cases (15%) had a good outcome. The average AOFAS score is 92.84. All the patients at the end of 6 months were comfortable to do their day-to-day activities without any pains. No case required routine implant removal. Conclusions: Injuries to the syndesmosis are a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the orthopedic surgeon. The lack of clear radiographic parameters on which to make surgical decisions places greater importance on the physical examination and advanced imaging. Lack of injury to the deltoid ligament and posterior tibiofibular ligament based on magnetic resonance imaging is a reliable determinant to consider nonoperative treatment. Injury to the deltoid ligament or disruption of the relationship of the tibia and fibula typically is treated with surgical reduction and fixation. Use of the contralateral lower extremity is the most reliable in determining the normal relationship of the tibia and fibula for the patient both preoperatively and intraoperatively. Sagittal instability is more critical than coronal instability and must be taken into account when considering reduction of fixation of the syndesmosis. Further studies will determine the need for primary repair of the deltoid ligament and fixation of the posterior malleolus in the setting of ankle fracture and syndesmotic injuries. As the understanding of the longer term outcomes following injury to the syndesmosis advances, a logical algorithm to the treatment of these injuries should emerge.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132812109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an imminent need to encourage research and publications from the SAARC nations. This review has attempted to identify the challenges and gaps, and has attempted to provide remedies to overcome these. More focus on research and publication is needed from the SAARC nations. Individuals, organizations, and governments should make sincere efforts to publish their research in impact journals, and no research should go wasted; unpublished or in predatory journals. More journals in the field of orthopedics and sports medicine are required from SAARC. Collaborations between institutions (national and international) are useful in getting impactful research and subsequent publications.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128154556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains the treatment of choice for restoring function and activity in end-stage hip arthritis. The medium-term outcome of uncemented THA in the Indian population is less studied. Hence, this study was taken up with aim to study clinical and radiological outcomes of uncemented THA in patients with age less than 40 years. Materials and Methods: This study was a prospective study done on 50 patients admitted to RNT Medical College and M.B. Hospital Udaipur during December 2021 to September 2022 chosen based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were informed about the study in all respects, and written informed consents were obtained. The follow-up period was at 12th day, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months for functional outcome assessment and radiological evaluation. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively. Inclusion criteria: (1) adult age group 20–50 years; (2) patients with secondary arthritis of hip (posttraumatic, avascular necrosis of femoral head, or ankylosing spondylitis). Exclusion criteria: (1) active infection of the hip joint or any other active infection in body; (2) patient with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, unstable cardiac disease, and with other grave medical concerns or severe comorbidity; (3) neuropathic joint; (4) not willing to participate; (5) with vascular insufficiency. Results: Bony ingrowth with no evidence of loosening was seen consistently both on femoral and acetabular side in all patients on X-ray. No statistically significant association was found between initial alignment of the femoral component and clinical outcome. Conclusions: Uncemented THA can be used in young patients with excellent to good functional and radiological outcome at mid-term follow-up, high satisfaction rate, and lower rate of complications.","PeriodicalId":232675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127879690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disease has been linked to various extrapulmonary symptoms and consequences in addition to typical respiratory illness. This case highlights a probable neurological complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection. A 28-year-old healthy man, sustained wedge compression of D12 vertebra following road traffic accident, presented with paraplegia. One week following admission, the patient had a progressive neurological deterioration and developed high grade fever with weakness in both upper limbs. The patient developed quadriplegia 10 days after admission. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain and spine were done. MRI brain was normal, whereas MRI spine showed D11-D12 anterolisthesis with cord compression with T2 hyperintensity of cervical cord.
