A two-step method for the design of foamed nanocomposite polymers for electromagnetic interferences (EMI) shielding applications is first presented. An original method more suited to thin nanostructured films and nanocomposite polymer membranes for fuel cell applications is then detailed. The LNA is laminated with 2 mil LCP and via interconnects are fabricated. Measurements are made before and after packaging to ensure accurate comparison of amplifier performance. Before packaging, the LNA yielded 10.3 dB of gain, a minimum noise figure of 1.8 dB and a 50 Ω noise figure of 1.9dB. After packaging, there was a 0.1 dB of loss in gain output, a 0.1 dB increase in minimum noise figure and a 0.6 dB increase in 50 Ω noise figure. The Butler matrix is based on a rectangular coaxial structure, constructed using five layers of gold coated micromachined silicon slices. The patch antennas are of an air-filled microstrip type, and spaced by half a wavelength at 38 GHz to form the array. The demonstrated device is 26 mm by 23 mm in size and 1.5 mm in height. The measured return losses at all input ports are better than −10 dB between 34.4 and 38.3 GHz. This functionality is achieved solely through the use of one T-network and three switch elements. In the absence of a suitable MEMS fabrication process, the concept is demonstrated through the realisation of two MMIC circuits that represent the two states of a 90° phase shifter at 30 GHz. In order to analyze relationship between T-matching geometry and antenna impedance, we interpret the transformer circuit as an equivalent circuit depending on the design parameters of the circuit. From the parametric study of the T-matching, we derive an optimized topology which is able to overcome electrically change of the geometry resulted from material loading. Next, based on the previous study, we design two types of tag antennas for practical item-level RFID applications that require the discrimination different objects. We calculate theoretically the minimum operating power of tags based on the computed antenna characteristics, antenna impedance, directivity, efficiency, regarding various dielectric constants. To verify the performance of the developed tags in practical conditions, we measure the minimum required power to activate tags on multiple objects in conjunction with commercial measurement system. As a result, the designed tags present almost consistent readability on materials from low to high dielectric constant. However, one of the main obstacles to form the image is the material loss. It would smear the finer details of the image. In this paper, a method is presented to compensate the losses by embedding an injection-locked oscillator near the focus region of the NRI material. With the use of injection locking technique, the oscillator is operated at the same frequency of the input point source but provides with higher power at the focus region.
