Cut-throat competition rules the day, the evolutionary adage ‘survival of the fittest’ holds true today more than ever. The unrelenting pressure to prove one’s worth, the unrealistic aspiration to excel in all spheres and the constant endeavour to be better than other people are challenges and pressures negatively impacting the quality of life but sadly all too common to modern day technology-driven living. Materialism and consumerism rule the roost and there is seemingly no end in sight for wants. Acquisition is mistakenly viewed as excellence by the present populace who seem unmindful of the fact that there exists such a thing as ‘holistic achievement’ which alone sequels human excellence, and it could be strived for and achieved by applying the Folklore formula in day-to-day life. Folklores keep yesteryear culture and ancient traditions alive, offer insights into the lives of people in a much earlier time in history and help shape and give direction to the values, hopes and aspirations of the future generation. During the first half of the 20th century, India passed through period of economic stagnation. Consequently, the extent of urbanization was very limited. Urban population, which accounted for 11 per cent of total population in 1901 lazily, crept to the figure of 14 per cent in 1941. With a very liberal definition of the urban area adopted in 1951, urban population became 17.6 per cent of total. Much of the increase, therefore, was statistical. This explains why the adoption of a little more strict definition of the urban area in 1961 census resulted in recording a very small increase in the urban population and it was estimated at 18.3 per cent of total population. Sustainable concerns can lead to new options; for example, overcrowding is one of the prominent concerns concerning sustainable tourism for famous places such as Varanasi. Varanasi has 87 ghats, but only six to seven ghats have visitors’ attractions, which is a significant reason for overcrowding. In response, placeness can be developed at specific ghats to help crowd management. The other significant sustainable concerns can also address through the development of placeness, such as minimizing the probability of infrastructural (ghat, temples and walls of heritage buildings) damage, maximizing the livelihoods of local communities, enhancing the reach to the cultural diversity of the city, ensuring the new opportunities for regional art and craft promotion, and creating more options for the local (at ghat) tourism. The objective of this research paper is to construct significant consideration for developing the placeness to ensure the concept of sustainable tourism at Ganga ghats in Varanasi. Field surveys (among residents, vendors, artisans, and scholars) and visual elicitation (for in-depth interviews) have been conducted to elicit the theoretical framework for constructing the consideration. Urban construction and the process of transformation were at the centre of conversation to ensure the social, religious and economic meanings of the city and local communities. Later, it was examined through discourse analysis. Gulabi meenakari (as handicraft) and Gaay ghat (as a place) have been taken for the case development, in which the form and functions of ghat have been discussed in the context of recommendation.
