The most widely used piezoelectric/ferroelectric ceramic material today, including specialized ceramics for military applications (ex. sonar), consists of PbTiO3-PbZrO3 (i.e. PZT-system). It has become imperative to integrate a processing strategy with a lead-free ferroelectric material capable of competing with or surpassing the properties of lead-based compositions. This work examines the development of optimal processing parameters through texturing and reactive templated grain growth to selectively engineer a polycrystalline ceramic microstructure. It presents how these parameters can affect the electro-mechanical properties for a sodium bismuth titanate based composition. The final properties for all ceramic materials are highly influenced by the processing steps and forming techniques used to construct the bulk ceramic component. Texturally modified ceramic compositions have recently exhibited enhanced properties that, depending on the system, match and even surpass those of an optimum modified lead-based composition. In this work we report on the development and use of a texture induced forming process combined with reactive templated grain growth to produce grain-oriented polycrystalline bulk ceramics. Thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction characterization, microstructure stereology and the dielectric and electromechanical performance will be presented. There have been a number of experimental studies that show that these materials have many peculiar properties that cannot be described by a simple series connection of the individual layers that make up the heterostructures. A thermodynamic analysis is presented to demonstrate that ferroelectric multilayers interact through internal elastic, electrical, and electromechanical fields and the ¿strength¿ of the coupling can be quantitatively described using Landau theory of phase transformations, theory of elasticity, and principles of electrostatics. In addition to broken spatial inversion symmetry that can lead to asymmetric thermodynamic potentials, the modeling indicates that the electrostatic coupling between the layers leads to the suppression of ferroelectricity at a critical paraelectric layer thickness for ferroelectric-paraelectric bilayers. This bilayer is expected to have a colossal dielectric/piezoelectric response similar to the anomaly near Curie-Weiss temperature in homogeneous ferroelectrics at this critical thickness. This behavior has the characteristics of a ¿phase transformation.¿ The relative thicknesses of the layers can be used as a design parameter for bilayer, multilayers, and graded heterostructures. The individual phases were prepared by conventional ceramic method. The particulate composites of ferrite and ferroelectric phases were prepared in ferroelectric rich region. The presences of both the phases in the composites were characterized by using X-ray diffraction technique. The SEM images were used to study the microstructure of composites. The variation of dielectric constant was studied as a function of temperature at fixed frequencies viz. 1 kHz, 10 kHz, 100 kHz and 1MHz. Many of these are all electric with batteries as the primary source of energy. This talk explores the idea of extending the battery life (or flight time) of an electric radio controlled plane by using several harvesting concepts combined into one aircraft. Piezoceramic based harvesting using fiber based piezoceramic composites are in integrated into the wings. A cantilever type actuator is integrated into the fuselage and solar panels are integrated into the upper surfaces. We study the influence of temperature and time-dependent leakage currents on recently reported phenomena such as anomalous positive temperature coefficient of resistivity and resistive switching behavior. SrTiO3 was chosen as a model thin film because the dielectric relaxation is not influenced by ferroelectric polarization, as, for example, for (Ba,Sr)TiO3 thin films. We have measured the leakage currents of sputtered, strongly (110) textured SrTiO3 thin films with Pt top and bottom electrodes as a function of time, film thickness, bias field and temperature. We show that apparent dielectric relaxation times decrease with film thickness and increasing temperature and ranged between 1 Ç¿Ï 100 seconds. We show that hysteresis in the I¿V characteristics is strongly correlated with the non-steady state characteristics of the electrical characteristics. The sign of the applied bias field influenced both dielectric relaxation times and hysteresis, reflecting different trap state distributions near bottom and top contacts and/or different barrier heights. Measurements of the leakage currents under applied bias fields as a function of temperature showed distinctive peak was observed around 260K that could be correlated with non-steady state current. We show that for thick films results can be interpreted in terms of trapping/detrapping in the ! depletion region of the blocking contacts. The composites consist of a low permittivity host containing either spherical conducting inclusions having dielectric coating shells, or dielectrically or conductively graded spherical dielectric particles. It is shown that the local electric field and power density enhancement effects diminish as the thickness of shells, the number of grading layers or the degree of nonlinearity of grading increases. The reduced enhancement effects significantly increase the normalized stored electric energy due to the fact that with a reduced enhancement factor a higher voltage can be applied. Frequency effects for composites with conductivity-graded particles were also considered. The x-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, and SEM micrographs showed the presence of constituent phases in the composite. The variation of the dielectric constant with frequency in the range of 100 Hz to 1 MHz shows both, decrease in ¿¿ and significant frequency dispersion accompanied with an increase in the loss tangent, with increase in NFO concentration in the composites. The BTO-NFO composites exhibited well-defined magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature. This matrix in turn forms a close-to-ideal dielectric. Such a structure offers, in principle, several advantages over conventional sintered ceramics, particularly with respect to ageing and fatigue. We show examples of ferroelectric glass ceramics in which the composition of the ferroelectric phase as well as the size of the crystallites are varied in a systematic way.
