In addition, an antenna (developed by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)) was used to detect the electromagnetic signal in front of each slot of the two stator windings. The characteristic PRPD (phase resolved partial discharge) signature of internal discharges was detected both from line end measurements and in front of every slot. Other features characteristic of specific defects, such as slot discharges, was detected both from the terminal and from the TVA probe only for one of the generators. In contradistinction, for the other generator, slot discharges were only seen with the TVA/PRPD measurements and not from the terminals. The advantages and the limits of the measurements made from both the line end terminals and with the TVA probe are further discussed based on the results from the two generators.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. A switchgear manufacturer has invested in the advancement of partial discharge technologies related to the on-line analysis of insulation systems for MV switchgear. Partial discharge testing has been completed on both new MV switchgear in the factory setting, as well as several older field installations. The results clearly indicate that partial discharge analysis of MV switchgear is an excellent on-line predictive maintenance tool. It has also been found that older MV switchgear designs are prone to internal corona activity. The majority of existing plants contain MV switchgear of a very old design, therefore the use of on-line PD analysis can identify areas of immediate concern. This paper reviews the applications to MV switchgear. Actual examples of pending failures, which were identified by on-line partial discharge measurements, are presented. This new application of partial discharge technology can greatly aid in the day-to-day reliability and life-extension of MV electrical equipment.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Relative losses play a major role in material selection for electronic and electric power applications including power converters, transformers, controllers, and filter elements. The relative losses become especially important if the electrical excitation of the magnetic material excites a mechanical resonance of the core. The dynamic behavior and the unusual B-H loop characteristics of toroidal test cores having magnetostrictive properties are compared to results obtained by an electromechanical model for resonant and nonresonant conditions. The mechanical response of the magnetic material to sine and square wave voltage excitations are compared.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. This work is an important part of continually improving measurement accuracy and evaluating component reliability for our customers. Two commercially available measurement systems were slected for this study. This paper describes the electrical measurements and test results between two testing systems at two supplier locations and Sandia. The test methods, procedures and electrical parameters that are within the scope of each measurement system's capability are the only parameters that are reported in this evaluation. All test units were supplied by Sandia National Laboratories and are Sandia designs. The measurement systems were calibrated based on the manufacturer's specified accuracy for normal operation, and the standards used are traceable to NIST.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Whereas round wire windings are mostly applied in low-voltage machines, preformed windings are used for high-voltage motors. The development of the SamicaRound electrical insulation system enables motors of the traditional low-voltage design to operate up to 6.6 kV. The goal of the tests presented in this paper was to prove the suitability of the SamicaRound insulation system for rated voltages up to 6.6 kV and to determine the respective application thereof.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Results of this investigation show that low viscosity is absolutely essential for a good impregnation of insulation layers. High maximum viscosity values, high surface energy of the resin part as well as filler morphology cause poor impregnation behavior. Optimum partial discharge properties may only be obtained if full impregnation within the insulation layer is achieved. As soon as one single void is left in the insulation, the partial discharge inception voltage drops by a factor of 10. Partial discharge data from the epoxy-resin impregnated coil show a significant improvement upon applying epoxy systems with excellent impregnation characteristics.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Generator reliability as influenced by engineering design parameters 发电机的可靠性受工程设计参数的影响

{"title":"Generator reliability as influenced by engineering design parameters","authors":"C. Maughan","doi":"10.1109/EEIC.2001.965605","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/EEIC.2001.965605","url":null,"abstract":"In recent years, power-plant life expectancy has extended beyond 40 to 50 years, including on large, high-duty generating equipment. Simultaneously, commercial pressures have lead generator designers of new equipment to: (1) reduce safety and duty margins; (2) move toward higher stress levels; and (3) increase the rate of implementation of new design concepts. The net effect has been a negative impact on generator reliability and life expectancy, and has lead to a significant increase in maintenance costs. In this paper, the impacts of the four basic deterioration mechanisms on generators are considered (TEAM): thermal, electrical, ambient, and mechanical. Only those design factors directly relating to deterioration are considered. These topics are discussed rather comprehensively but in relatively nontechnical terms. A better understanding of these deterioration mechanisms should assist owners of generators to implement better operating and maintenance practices, and thus reduce maintenance costs and extend reliable life of the generator.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat.
