They are made with the winding on the inside of the motor (stator), and the magnet on the outside (rotor). This paper describes the analysis of an existing motor using a lumped parameter model. The flux paths are described and a circuit model is developed. From this model, startup and running torque are derived using the change in magnetic energy with angle. The derived torque is then compared to experimental measurements.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Why test magnet wire? 为什么要测试磁铁线?

{"title":"Why test magnet wire?","authors":"J. A. Whitney, R. B. Failing to reject unsatisfactory products which leads to failures in the field may damage the company's reputation causing sales to suffer even though after incurring the expense of replacing the unsatisfactory products. Even though present day magnet wire is an excellent product, some product rejections may be caused by deficiencies in the magnet wire they contain. Therefore, both the quality and cost of the product may be improved by testing the wire. Improving the quality of the product, while at the same time reducing its cost, is an unbeatable combination. Only those magnet wire users who test the wire prior to incorporating it into their products are able to assure themselves that it is satisfactory and reject that which is not. Those who do not test the wire may discover problems later, or have their customers discover them as deficiencies in their finished products. The use of in-line test equipment that gives instant feedback would make the manufacturer immediately aware of bad wire, permitting them to take direct action to correct the problem and avoid producing more scrap. The types of test to be carried out are mechanical, electrical and chemical.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Partial discharge tests have been used historically to characterize bars/coils that have been sent to Powertech Laboratories for voltage endurance and thermal cycling tests so that the bars that displayed the highest PD quantities were subjected to voltage endurance tests. Utilities are now beginning to specify the limits for PD magnitudes and other related PD quantities as a quality assurance measure in their technical specifications for large motors and hydrogenerators. There appears to be confusion as to what are the reasonable limits for these quantities and whether or not these limits make practical sense. Since Powertech has had the unique opportunity to examine several insulation designs over the last decade this paper is an early attempt to document the current levels of PD quantities that are being measured on bars/coils being manufactured with modern insulation systems. No attempt has been made to correlate these quantities with its performance on voltage endurance (VE) test times but this work is ongoing. Several bars from different manufacturers were subjected to PD measurements at their normal line-to-ground voltage. These PD measurements were made using Powertech's classical PD system as well as a commercial system. One significant difference was that the PHA system uses pico-coulomb to represent charge magnitude while PDA system uses millivolt. Laboratory calibration was done to correlate these discharge magnitudes. Results showed that if the discharge magnitudes and the number of PD pulses were small both the classical and the commercial system gave similar PD responses. On the other hand if the discharge rate (number of pulses per second) was large the classical PD measurement system tended to saturate. Historically, when such saturation occurred during measurements with the classical PD system, measurements were repeated at a lower test voltage (for example 0.8 pu). Subsequent dissections of samples that exhibited such high PD showed the presence of a large number of voids in the groundwall insulation.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat. Traditional methods using insulation resistance measurements, polarization index measurements and capacitance, tan delta measurements serve as good quality assurance criterion of acceptable values. However, for obtaining a more clear and focussed information on insulation health, newer testing and analytical techniques have to be adapted. This paper discusses two such methodologies. Recovery voltage measurement (RVM) is a technique based on measurement of increase of voltage across the transformer insulation after a charge-discharge cycle. This method yields key insulation parameters like moisture content and temperature withstand capability. A full cycle of recovery voltage measurement often requires a large amount of time. The DC absorption test aims at finding similar information as in the case of RVM with simple instrumentation and in a lesser amount of time. This paper describes the technique of RVM and later explores the possibility of using the DC absorption test for determination of health of transformer insulation. Experimental results to support the contention have also been included.","PeriodicalId":228071,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings: Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing and Coil Winding Conference (Cat.
