In each sampling interval, an optimization procedure is performed to calculate optimal control actions. In addition, it has the ability to incorporate economic objectives as part of control requirements. Here, it applies the wedge control philosophy to minimize unit maneuvering and reversals, which affect load frequency control (LFC) costs. The proposed methodology is tested with a three-area power system. Simulation results show that the proposed LFC successfully complies with NERC's control performance standards, and also achieves the economic objective.","PeriodicalId":226571,"journal":{"name":"Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, 2003","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127997969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the last decade, a number of control devices under the term flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) technology have been proposed and implemented. This paper describes a voltage stability comparison study between two FACTS devices on static behavior of a transmission system: a static VAr compensator (SVC) and thyristor switched series capacitor (TSSC). This study has been performed using modal analysis technique. The impact of these devices on voltage stability has been investigated using the 30-bus New-England system.","PeriodicalId":226571,"journal":{"name":"Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, 2003","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121336802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goals of the evaluation were to find: the ratings of the battery at different temperatures (-20, 0, +20 and +40/spl deg/C); determine the suitability for using this battery in an electric vehicle; and compare the results of different battery discharge algorithms, i.e., constant current, constant power and realistic load (described herein). Testing was done at the Battery Evaluation Lab at UML, which is described herein. The battery parameters measured were terminal voltage, current, case temperature and ambient air temperature. Results of the experiments are as follows: the manufacturer's capacity ratings were confirmed (i.e., 85 A-h); the battery is found to be suitable for use in EVs with superior specific energy and the battery has higher energy capacity at higher temperatures while the charging efficiency is higher at lower temperatures.","PeriodicalId":226571,"journal":{"name":"Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, 2003","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126515931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Variable speed settings are normally required to match the load requirement, reduce acoustical noise, and energy savings in blenders, air blower etc. In the proposed circuit, one transistor and a diode bridge are configured to vary the AC supply across the motor. Switching the transistor ON and OFF at a fast rate results in variable AC voltage. By using the proposed circuit. the PWM modulated AC supply has high frequency harmonic of which the first harmonic is dependent on the operating switching frequency. This in turn makes filtering the harmonics a simple task. Comparison between the phase controls circuits normally adopted for speed control with the proposed controller was investigated using PSpice models.","PeriodicalId":226571,"journal":{"name":"Large Engineering Systems Conference on Power Engineering, 2003","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123835870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
