How an Eastern Yucatec Village Made Cash Transfer Promises Accountable","authors":"Andrés Dapuez","doi":"10.7440/antipoda26.2016.07","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7440/antipoda26.2016.07","url":null,"abstract":"This paper explores how three temporalities of exchange amend the reception of cash transfers for development in a village in Eastern Yucatan, Mexico. Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews of recipients of cash transfers from Procampo and Oportunidades, this study reveals that ritual promising functions as a means of temporal regulation in most transactions of this sort, and that the recipients hold their government accountable for promises and commitments regarding cash transfers. In assessing the temporal ranges and effectiveness of these transfers by alluding to previous stipulations that sustain the exchange and make it understandable and bearable as a promise, the people in this village consider the objectives of the Procampo and Oportunidades programs to be implausible. Accountability with respect to the long-term effects of these transfers is not, however, based only on local impressions of a state that procrastinates in its “engagement” with peasants. As the timetable establishe...","PeriodicalId":225715,"journal":{"name":"Antípoda: Revista de Antropología y Arqueología","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128693011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meanwhile, “witches” refers to the witch-hunts of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the practice in which women were confined to the domestic sphere and their reproductive role of the workforce. Therefore, we want to analyze the link between the production process of the oil workforce inside the production system and outside of their work experiences in Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentinian Patagonia. Given that masculinity and femininity are relational gender positions, we will discuss the role of men and women in the organization of work, as a whole.","PeriodicalId":225715,"journal":{"name":"Antípoda: Revista de Antropología y Arqueología","volume":"97 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131219424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nesse sentido, as teorias que explicam as migracoes representam, neste artigo, um referencial teorico inicial para explicar o fluxo migratorio do Norte da Italia para o estado do Espirito Santo (Brasil), especificamente, para o municipio de Santa Teresa, denominada inicialmente como Nucleo Timbuy, a partir de 1874-1875. A analise do referencial teorico sera complementada por uma pesquisa bibliografica, documental e de campo (selecao de seis entrevistas com descendentes de imigrantes, oriundos das familias mais antigas que se estabeleceram e permaneceram em Santa Teresa). Com o referencial teorico apresentado, podemos confirmar que: o processo imigratorio para o Espirito Santo foi impulsionado por fatores de repulsao no Norte da Italia no seculo XIX e fatores de atracao no territorio desse estado brasileiro; houve auxilio de instituicoes agenciadoras; preexistencia de uma cultura migratoria entre os italianos e a formacao de redes sociais que davam informacoes de Santa Teresa para familiares e compatriotas. Alem disso, a migracao representou a possibilidade de manter a unidade familiar e impulsionar melhorias financeiras.","PeriodicalId":225715,"journal":{"name":"Antípoda: Revista de Antropología y Arqueología","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127077486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the anthropological developments on language, words and suffering on one hand and perception and senses on the other, speaking, listening and seeing those in treatment are understood as a set of bodily perceptual and expressive actions. This method being one among various ways for these individuals to express using ordinary language. Finally, due to the ethnographic approach, the speech actions in these treatments are analyzed as one component of a complex cartography that includes unspoken words, the use of words and speeches of others, running out of words, being silenced, acting out some words, demanding the others attention, listening, being heard, and their links to seeing and being seen in the ordinary life.","PeriodicalId":225715,"journal":{"name":"Antípoda: Revista de Antropología y Arqueología","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132456785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
