In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), animal production constitutes 45% of the total agricultural production. In response to the growing population, there is an increasing need for food of animal origin. State hatcheries and many private companies run animal production activities along with small-scale family enterprises. Almost all feedstock of animal feed with parent and hybrid materials are imported. On the other hand, most of the food of animal origins that is marketed (e.g. meat, milk, egg etc.) is produced in TRNC and the rest is imported when it is necessary. Halloumi, which covers almost all animal-based imported goods, is imported into many countries especially Turkey and Kuwait and contributes to the country’s economy. This study concentrates on the general state of animal production in TRNC and aims to present the current state of ruminant animals (66 thousand head of cattle, 197 thousand head of sheep and 78 thousand head of goat) in the country’s livestock farming, their contributions to the economy and the type of their production.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"91 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141347727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research was conducted in Kahramanmaraş ecological conditions during the 2019-2020 growing season in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Heading date (HD), grain filling period (GFP), days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), spike length (SL), grain number per spike (GNS), grain weight per spike (GWS), thousand-grain weight (TGW), grain yield per plant (GY), and chlorophyll content of flag leaf (SPAD value) traits were investigated on F1 plants and parents. When the mean values of parents and F1 generations were examined, F1 mean values were higher than the mean values of parents in heading date (134.06 days), days to maturity (164.04 days), spike length (13.31 cm), grain number per spike (51.64 units), grain weight per spike (2.11 g), thousand-grain weight (36.58 g), grain yield per plant (35.99 g), and chlorophyll content of flag leaf (49.60 SPAD), while lower in grain filling period (41.77 days) and plant height (88.80 cm). According to diallel analyses, it was found that HD, DM, GFP, PH, GWS, and SPAD traits had additive and dominant gene effects, while SL, GNS, TGW, and GY traits had significant dominant gene effects. Partial dominance was observed for HD, DM, PH, GWS, GY, and SPAD traits, while superior dominance was observed for GFP, SL, GNS, and TGW traits. The effects of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significant for all the traits studied. Positive average heterosis and heterobeltiosis values were determined for GNS, GWS, TGW, and GY traits. Regarding grain yield per plant, Adana-99, Lucilla, and Masaccio genotypes were identified as potential parents for breeding programs. Combinations of 1635 x 2115, Masaccio x Lucilla, Adana-99 x Lucilla, Adana-99 x Masaccio, Adana-99 x 1635, and Flamura-85 x Lucilla were identified as promising hybrids for grain yield.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"60 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141348422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main material of the study consisted of the data obtained from face-to-face questionnaires with farmers engaged in animal and crop production together in the villages connected to the center of Yozgat province. In the study, it was determined that the farmers were mostly in the 31-40 age group (44.8%), high school and secondary school graduates (40.0%, 36.0%) and the number of family members was 5-7 people (59.2%). All of the farmers stated that they had heard of the concept of climate change before. When it comes to climate change, farmers mostly report that drought is the first, global warming is the second and changes in seasons are the third. 90.4% of the farmers stated that climate change affects their region. The observed changes were determined to be decreasing precipitation, irregular and changing precipitation, shortening of the precipitation period, and the occurrence of water scarcity. All of the farmers stated that climate change negatively affected animal and plant production. As a result, the farmers participating in the survey have a high awareness of climate change, they are affected by these changes in animal production, there are certain practices that they pay attention to in adapting to these processes and reducing their effects, but the need for information, training, legal practices and inspections to be carried out by relevant institutions on this issue has been particularly emphasized.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"9 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141349165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efforts should be made to increase the efficiency of use of plant nutrients and minimize N losses from terrestrial ecosystems to aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the effects of different doses (%0, %1 and %2) of biochar obtained from corn cob and rice husk biomass, which are agricultural production residues, at three different temperatures (300, 400 and 500℃), on ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) leaching in a coarse-textured soil were investigated. PE columns with a diameter of 70 mm and a height of 20 cm were used in the study, which was carried out in three replications according to the randomized plots trial design. Total nitrogen (27 kg N da-1) and water amounts (969 mm) used for 6 tons da-1 yield of sugar beet were applied. Total water was given to each column in equal volume using drip adjustment sets at one-week intervals, simulating 6 irrigation periods, and the leaked water was collected in each irrigation period and NO3- and NH4+ concentrations were determined. Applications of 1 and 2 doses of corn and rice biochars obtained at three different pyrolysis temperatures caused a significant decrease in NH4+ concentrations leaching from the column. Similarly, biochar applications (especially 2% dose) caused a significant decrease in NO3- concentrations leaching from the column. While the total NO3- concentration leaching from the control columns was 149,23 mg kg-1, 2% dose of rice husk biochars at 300, 400 and 500℃ temperature applications caused a decrease in the total NO3- concentrations washed from the column by 51%, 55% and 51%, respectively. The results revealed that biochar applications significantly reduced nitrogen leaching from the soil.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"7 20","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141379744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initial growth and development in plants are significantly affected by temperature and salinity. The aim of the study is to investigate the growth and development parameters of two different mung bean genotypes under different salt concentrations and temperatures. Four different salt doses (0, 5, 10, and 15 EC) and three different temperatures (15, 20, and 30°C) were used in the study. Germination percentage, shoot and root lengths, shoot fresh and dry weights, and ion leakage parameters were examined in the study. As a result of the study, the highest germination rate, shoot and root lengths, and fresh and dry weights were determined at 30°C under control salt application. The highest germination rate was observed at 30°C under control and 5 EC salt applications, while the lowest was recorded at 15°C under 15 EC salt application. The lowest ion leakage was determined in the control application at 15°C, while the highest was observed at 30°C under 15 EC application. Increasing temperature positively affected growth parameters. It was determined that salt stress could be tolerated up to a certain level with high temperatures. This study conducted on mung bean is indicative for developing varieties tolerant to drought and salt stress, which are important issues today.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"15 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140672200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Single-born lambs of both breeds and genders were included in the evaluation. Five different non-linear growth models were compared: Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, Richards, and Weibull. The best model for describing growth was chosen based on four criteria: coefficient of determination (R²), mean square error (MSE), Akaike information criterion (AIC), and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). Models with the highest R² and the lowest MSE, AIC, and BIC values were considered the best fit for the data. It was observed that the Brody model had the highest R2 and lowest MSE, AIC and BIC values for Tuj and ROxTuj (F1) female and male lambs. The Gompertz, Logistic, and Richards models exhibited similar predictive performance. In contrast, the Weibull model produced significantly different results compared to the other models when predicting weight changes. Therefore, the Brody model was identified as the most effective model for explaining growth patterns in both Tuj and RoxTuj (F1) lambs.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":"94 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140676508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lentil is a valuable food source, rich in proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins. However, lentil production faces challenges due to salinity stress, which hampers water uptake and causes toxic effects on plants. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of salicylic acid (SA) seed priming and varying salt (NaCl) concentrations on the germination and development of lentil seeds. The research was conducted in Field Crops Biotechnology laboratory, University of Dicle, Faculty of Agriculture, Türkiye. In the research, control, 2 salt (NaCl), 4 salicylic acid (SA) doses and their combinations were used on Lens culinaris variety called İlke. Germination percentage, energy, rate index, mean germination time, peak value, and vigor index were calculated. The results demonstrated that SA had a significant impact on improving lentil germination under salt stress conditions. Specifically, lower concentrations of NaCl combined with SA showed positive effects on germination and growth parameters, compared to higher NaCl concentrations. The highest germination percentage, energy and rate index values were in the control and 0.25 SA dose treatment. Salicylic acid doses, under 50 NaCl concentration exhibited higher germination percentage, energy and rate index values than under 100 NaCl. Increasing SA and salt doses negatively affected lentil seed germination. This finding is significant for lentil cultivation in salt-affected areas, offering a potential strategy to improve crop resilience and yield in challenging environmental conditions.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":" 91","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140683938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tree has been encountered with numerous diseases. Chestnut blight, caused by Cryphonectria parasitica (Murrill) M. E. Barr, is one of the most common diseases having spread to every chestnut-growing region. In this study, the effects of Bellis® (25.2% Boscalid + 12.8% Pyraclotrobin), a fungicide commonly used in plant disease control, were evaluated at different doses (10 ppm and 50 ppm) against the chestnut blight agent C. parasitica, which had not been previously studied for its effects in vitro. The isolates included two virulent strains (Cp1_2023, Cp2_2023) and two hypovirulent strains (Cp7_2023, Cp9_2023). The effects of Boscalid + Pyraclotrobin on the mycelial growth of the pathogenic fungus were determined for the first time in vitro, and these effects were detected at the sdhA and sdhB genes expression level. The results showed that the mycelial growth and pathogenicity of C. parasitica isolates in the fungicide-treated medium were consistent with the gene expression profile. Specifically, the virulent Cp1_2023 isolate exhibited higher mycelial growth, pathogenicity, and gene expression levels compared to the other isolate. In conclusion, it is recommended to conduct more detailed studies before using fungicides and to employ them in controlled environments.","PeriodicalId":225627,"journal":{"name":"Black Sea Journal of Agriculture","volume":" 29","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140684469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
