This UAG's aim is to extract atmospheric thermal energy and use it to supplement its battery energy usage and increase the mission period. Given an identified atmospheric thermal of known strength and location; current wind speed and direction; battery level; altitude and location of the UAG; and estimating the expected altitude gain from the thermal, is it possible to make an energy-efficient based motivation to fly to an atmospheric thermal so as to achieve UAG extended flight time? For this work it is assumed that candidate atmospheric thermal locations are of known longitude/latitude location, size, and strength. An algorithm, based on a fuzzy logic approach, is then developed to incorporate all available information with the current UAG status to provide an energy-based recommendation to modify the flight path from the nominal mission trajectory. Research, development, and simulation of the decision-making algorithm is the primary focus of this work. Three models are developed: Battery Usage Model (BUM), Altitude Gain Model (AGM), and Intelligent Decision Model (IDM).","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127772289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ultracapacitor's high power capabilities make it a good choice for this application. The optimal control technique of Dynamic Programming (DP) is applied to obtain the \"best possible\" fuel economy for the vehicle over the driving cycle under pointwise-in-time hard system constraints. Attainable fuel economy improvements are illustrated using a real-time implementable Model Predictive Control (MPC) method using a simple model for predicting future torque demands. The incorporation of simulated telematic future information is also investigated to further improve the the fuel economy of the MPC method close to the DP-calculated maximum.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126239558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Earlier it has been shown by us that there exists a class of locally stabilizing saturated linear state feedbacks which cause periodic behavior for certain initial conditions and hence the closed-loop system is then not globally asymptotically stable. In this paper, we show that all the remaining locally stabilizing saturated linear state feedbacks globally stabilize the discrete time double integrator.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128079266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal control is chosen so that the posterior distribution of a particle matches as closely as possible the posterior distribution of the true state, given the observations. In the infinite-N limit, the empirical distribution of ensemble particles converges to the posterior distribution of an individual particle. The cost function in this control problem is the Kullback Leibler (K-L) divergence between the actual posterior, and the posterior of any particle. The optimal control input is characterized by a certain Euler-Lagrange (E-L) equation. A numerical algorithm is introduced and implemented in two general examples: A linear SDE with partial linear observations, and a nonlinear oscillator perturbed by white noise, with partial nonlinear observations.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128092434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State measurements and control laws are transmitted over a communication network and could be corrupted by human adversaries. In particular, we consider a class of human adversaries, namely correlated jammers, who are modeled as rational decision makers and whose strategies are highly correlated to the control system operator. The coupled decision making process is modeled as a two-level receding-horizon dynamic Stackelberg (leader-follower) game. We propose a receding-horizon Stackelberg control law for the operator, and analyze the resulting performance and closed-loop stability of the system under correlated attacks. We observe that, with full information of his follower, the operator is still able to maintain regional stability of the control system.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122242893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we revisit the attitude estimation algorithm on SO(3) that has been recently proposed in the literature, and propose some practical extensions and new insightful unit quaternion based proofs. Then, we propose an attitude stabilization control scheme using only inertial vector measurements. The originality of this control strategy stems from the fact that the explicit reconstruction of the attitude as well as the angular velocity measurements are not required anymore.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"192 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121735422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The resulting thermal-fluid flow patterns from such systems tend to be sensitive to disturbances, and advanced flow control techniques are important to maintain occupant comfort. In this work, we employ Eigensystems Realization Algorithm (ERA) to obtain low-order models of airflow in buildings, which capture relevant dynamics and are amenable for control design. We present an alternative interpretation that allows one to obtain models using ERA, without resorting to lifting, an approach that is typically used to introduce boundary control and boundary disturbances explicitly in the reduced-order model. Using this reduced-order model we derive an optimal control law in closed form (which is composed of a feedforward and a feedback term) for rejecting a known disturbance, while minimizing a quadratic cost related to occupant discomfort and energy consumption. We demonstrate this approach using closed loop CFD simulations of airflow in a room with a passively cooled radiant ceiling and a displacement vent.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131360080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Piezoelectric cantilevers, used as microactuators in micromanipulation and microassembly con texts, are particularly concerned. Due to their small sizes, these systems are very sensitive to environment (temperature, vibration, etc.) and to usury during functioning. Their behaviors often change because of the parameters variation. For that, linear modeling with uncertainty has been used to account the uncertainties, then classical H∞ and μ-synthesis approaches were applied. These techniques were efficiency but they were of high order which is not suitable for embedded microsystems. Furthermore, when the number of uncertain parameters increases, the modeling of microsystems became delicate and difficult. In this paper, we propose to model the uncertain parameters by bounding them with intervals. After wards, we propose to design a robust PID controller by using interval arithmetic and related tools in order to ensure the specified performances. In addition to the simplicity of the uncertainties modeling, the derived controller is of low order. The controller synthesis is formulated as a set-inversion problem. An application to the control of piezoelectric microactuators proves the efficiency of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131396202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power is typically only drawn from the sensor nodes when they are turned on, and as a consequence, the power consumption can be controlled by controlling the duty cycle of the sensors. In this paper, we provide a probabilistic scheduling of the duty cycles in a sensor network deployed in an area of interest based on a Poisson distribution which ensures that a performance measure, e.g., the probability of event detection, is achieved throughout the lifetime of the network. Upper bounds on the performance of the network are given in terms of the decay rates, the spatial distribution intensity, and the desired performance of the network.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130094698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motivation for this model comes from the area of emergency response protocols where systems may change unexpectedly, however, there are predefined types of actors. The model is based on previous work on dynamic discrete event systems and on template design. Synchronization patterns are introduced which allow the generic definition of component interactions regardless of a particular system composition. The synchronous product operation is updated in order to employ these patterns. Advantages of the proposed model include compactness of representation, preservation of the identity (history) of individual components and, with the use of online control, amenability to dynamic changes of control specifications.","PeriodicalId":225201,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2011 American Control Conference","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133832924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
