In this demonstration, we show how the available bandwidth can be used efficiently while at the same time keeping the interference power level below a certain threshold. This is done through the use of the constellation expansion technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems in DSA networks. The demonstration is based on real-time implementation of the constellation expansion technique on the reconfigurable Iris 2.0 software defined radio and the universal software radio peripheral (USRP-N210) as the hardware front-end.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124166176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The comparison is tentative because MobilityFirst is under-development as part of the NSF's Future Internet Architecture (FIA) research program, which was launched in 2010; while LTE is already in the early stages of commercial deployment globally by mobile operators. A novel aspect of the FIA program is to consider how proposed research architectures for the future Internet might impact industry/market structures and public policy. In keeping with this goal, it is clear that such an evaluation of MobilityFirst requires consideration of the ways that MobilityFirst might interact with LTE. After describing how these architectures differ, we offer preliminary thoughts on the implications of both for business models for future cellular mobile networks and for spectrum management policies. We explain how MobilityFirst is compatible with LTE, while offering the potential to stimulate innovation and competition through its more favorable compatibility with unlicensed spectrum regimes.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125725205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose three new management frameworks for DSA in an LTE+ HetNet: Spectrum Accountability Client, Cell Spectrum Management, and Domain Spectrum Management. For these spectrum management frameworks, we define protocol interfaces and operational signaling scenarios to support cooperative sensing, spectrum lease management, and alarm scenarios for rule adjustment. We also quantify, through integer programs, the benefits of using DSA in an LTE+ HetNet that can opportunistically reuse vacant TV and GSM spectrum. Using integer programs, we consider a topology using Geographic Information System data from the Blacksburg, VA metro area to assess the realistic benefits of DSA in an LTE+ HetNet.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117130597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, how to effectively enforce allocated spectrum is a key challenge when deploying dynamic spectrum access in practice. We propose and demonstrate Gelato, a spectrum permit system to enforce dynamic spectrum access. By embedding spectrum permits into data transmissions, Gelato intrinsically links each user's spectrum usage with her license, thus proving the right of spectrum usage. Trusted police nodes, who patrol transmission areas, can reliably detect illegal transmissions that lack of valid spectrum permits. In this demo, we will demonstrate a prototype of Gelato built on widely available USRP radios. We will illustrate how Gelato transmits and verifies spectrum permits, and its capability of detecting malicious attacks.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126972852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two potential solutions are proposed, in which the first solution focuses on signal's periodogram and formulates the decision model as an one-sided test based on Kullback-Leibler distance statistics, and the second solution proposes an augmented spectral correlation function (SCF) and exploits the fact that wireless microphone signal and CW exhibit different augmented SCFs. Both solutions are validated by simulation and experimental tests, shown to be capable of reliably sensing wireless microphone signals in the presence of strong noise and excessive CW interference.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121820647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current state of the art in SDR design relies on complete processing of the raw samples at the host computer, thereby impacting time critical tasks. Instead, we propose to move the processing closer to the front-end by interfacing an external FPGA board with the SDR. Our architecture, called CRUSH, is composed of a Xilinx ML605 FPGA Development Board connected to an Ettus Research USRP N210 through an HDL framework, with a custom interface to allow flexible data transfer between them and independent programming capability on the two devices. Our test scenario for spectrum sensing, a key step in determining channel availability before transmission in dynamic spectrum access networks, indicates significant benefits: CRUSH can implement FFTs at 100× improvement, and can perform a complete sensing cycle 10× faster than legacy SDRs for large FFT sizes that enable wideband sensing. By potentially reducing the load on the host, and allowing a powerful FPGA extension for off the shelf devices, CRUSH will enable advances in both protocol design and radio hardware. For DySPAN we will show a live demonstration of the CRUSH platform performing spectrum sensing. For this demo CRUSH will be receive only and operate in the 50 MHz to 2.2 GHz region. A laptop will be connected to CRUSH via Ethernet and will display the live results via a MATLAB GUI.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132457149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until now the main approach for a cognitive radio to operate in the TV bands has been to register TV broadcast stations locations and thus protecting the broadcast stations service area. Through information about TV receivers' location, we show that a cognitive radio should be able to operate within this service area without causing harmful interference to the TV receivers as defined by Ofcom and FCC. We provide simulations based on real statistics from Norway that show that especially in rural areas TV receiver registration can provide a substantial gain in terms of exploitable frequencies for a cognitive radio.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121166263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many of those channels that are detected to be free are adjacent to used channels, with possibly very large power levels. As a result, the true DSA problem is not only reliable detection of free bands, but also robust operation next to used bands. In this demo we demonstrate an SDR RFIC which is robust against out-of-band interference. This robustness is achieved by improving the linearity of the SDR receiver significantly. The need for robustness is demonstrated in real time by showing the received constellation diagram of an 802.11af-like OFDM signal in the presence of a large out-of-band interferer. The wanted and interfering signal are received simultaneously by two generations of SDR RFIC's, showing both the performance degradation caused by interference from adjacent bands and the improvement enabled by the robust receiver.","PeriodicalId":224818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131401189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
