In this study, benthic diatoms of Burdur River Basin were investigated as a consequence of a project on river basin management plan. This is the first detailed taxonomical study of diatoms taken from 13 streams, 4 lakes and 6 reservoirs of Burdur River Basin and a total of 223 taxa have been observed. Among genera, Navicula Bory (27) and Nitzschia Hassal (27) were represented with the highest numbers of taxa and followed by Gomphonema Agardh with a total of 22 species. Navicula antonii Lange-Bertalot and Nitzschia palea var. debilis (Kutzing) Grunow had the highest relative abundance with 17.1% and 15.5% respectively. As a closed basin, salinity varied greatly from fresh to saline water between the sampling stations and diatom composition contained species with a different tolerance level. Navicula antonii and Nitzschia frustulum (Kutzing) Grunow observed in all habitats indicating their euryhaline characters; however Navicula digitoconvergens was only detected in saline Acigol lake with a high relative abundance (38%) in autumn. Other two dominant species were Halamphora coffeiformis (Kutzing) Levkov and Navicula cincta (Ehrenberg) Ralfs in Acigol lake showing their tolerance to high salt content as a brackish species. According to first results, 11 species were new records for Turkish diatom flora. The high biodiversity of diatoms revealed the presence of different habitat characteristics within the basin. These results are an important contribution of Turkish diatom flora and could be useful for monitoring specific areas like Burdur River Basin.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130564409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As in the process of becoming a member state of EU, Turkish regulation is compatible with EU Drinking Water Directive. This study revealed that there are 489 drinking water treatment plants, 397 of which are under operation. Within this work, identity cards for these active plants were prepared. Process selection of these plants were specified. A GIS-based program called ISBIS is developed and all data collected within this work is uploaded to the database. Site-visits to 193 selected plants were conducted and site-visit reports focusing on operational and structural issues at these plants are issued. As a result of this work, it appeared that 37 drinking water treatment plants out of 193 site-visited need to be reconstructed. Also, it was observed that most of the drinking water treatment plants are not capable of removing micropollutants, and will need major revisions.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124986637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Determining and addressing the water quality and health of these aquatic ecosystems requires identification of the source of contamination. Surface water quality in Hale County was evaluated at least once a month at twenty sites in wet and dry seasons. Samples were analyzed for physical (turbidity), chemical (pH, conductivity, chloride, sulfate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, ammonium, ortho-phosphorus, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved organic carbon, optical indices), and microbiological ( E. coli ) water quality parameters. Excitation-emission matrixes (EEMs) Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) was used to identify and classify fluorescence emitting organic substances based on fluorescence peak location. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify analyte signatures associated with sewage contamination. In order to detect straight pipe wastewater impacts on water quality, three main sites were sampled upstream, midstream and downstream of the town of Newbern, Alabama over the three months of the drought period (i.e., from September to November 28 th , 2016). Over 20 water quality parameters were analyzed and compared with the WHO, EPA, and ADEM standards. The results showed that E. coli values highly exceed water quality standards, particularly after the drought when peak E. coli concentrations downstream exceeded 100,000 per 100 mL. This study is one of the first to document the adverse impacts of straight pipe discharges on water quality in the United States.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116204712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biological invasion has resulted in significant ecological degradations including alteration of the structure of populations and changes in ecosystems processes and services. There are a variety of reasons why invaders have introduced to new aquatic areas, such as dense marine traffic, anthropogenic modifications, extreme human use of water bodies. To display the status of aquatic ecosystem in terms of the invasive species, benthic invertebrate communities are a very good indicator.
