For this reason, it is important to investigate the water quality in rivers and water reservoirs which are close to settlement areas. In this study, surface water quality measurements were carried out at five observation stations along the main line of the Filyos stream, which forms the largest sub-basin in the western Karadeniz Basin, at intervals of thirty days in one year period. Water quality parameters (Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Calcium (Ca+2), Aluminum (Al+3), Manganese (Mn+2), Iron (Fe+3), Chromium (Cr+3), Lead (Pb+4), Zinc (Zn+2), Turbidity and Suspended Solids) seasonally measured and the analyzes were performed in the laboratory according to Standard Methods 2005 (APHA, 1998). After, estimation of the turbidity parameter based on parameters of chromium, chemical oxygen demand, iron, aluminum, suspended solids, manganese, zinc, lead and calcium was performed by artificial neural networks. The model results are shown in tables for each station separately and the topologies with the best performance is charted.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125489393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the decrease in basic life resources has required humanity to be purged of a comfortable but irresponsible life model once again. The foremost of these sources, water requires a separate attention and effort as it is indispensable. Because water is not only a vital need, but also a primary factor that shapes many important issues such as the settlements, lives, cultures and relations of societies. When this interaction, which has continued since the existence of human beings, is evaluated in terms of environmental history, the Ottoman Empire has been one of the civilizations that come to the fore with its success from its deep-rooted past. The Ottoman's approach and sensitivity to water constituted the basis for it to be referred to as \"water civilization\" and therefore to be chosen as the subject of the study. In this study, the footprints of the \"water\" in terms of the environmental history of the Ottoman Empire were followed; It is aimed to reveal approaches related to water supply, waste water, savings, protection and security of resources, floods, measures taken and the use of water from industry to energy. In addition, it is aimed that the approaches that can shed light on the present, being a role model for today's modern (!) societies, being a source of inspiration and contributing to environmental awareness are important outputs.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115219866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to evaluate changes in these water bodies, it is important to determine the reference areas (REFS) and maximum ecological potential areas (MEPS) so as to explain the deviations from the reference conditions and maintain or improve the ecological condition of the water bodies. This study explains the methodology used in the designation of the REFS and MEPS based on the phytoplankton quality element in inland surface waters by the Project for the Establishment of a Reference Monitoring Network in Türkiye. For this purpose, a total of 275 lakes and reservoirs were investigated in three sampling periods and at several sampling points according to lake size from eight basins in 2017, nine basins in 2018 and eight basins in 2019. The evaluation of phytoplankton was mainly based on phytoplankton and cyanobacteria biovolumes. Phytoplankton biovolume metrics (PT-BV and CY-BV) have been developed for the sampled shallow and deep standing water bodies. A total of 79 lakes and reservoirs from eighteen typologies were determined as REFS and MEPS according to phytoplankton. In addition, the approaches and precautions taken to protect the reference areas are explained.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"161 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113988091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In line with the European Water Framework Directive, a macroinvertebrate based multimetric method was tested for Turkish rivers as a potential assessment. In this study, benthic macroinvertebrate data (3502 samples obtained from 1925 stations with reference points) were used to create a multimetric index for all river types in the hydrobiogeographic regions of Türkiye. Nine (9) biological metrics were evaluated and index development criteria were chosen to capture meaningful results at the ecosystem, community and individual levels. The metric combinations were chosen to show the best distinction between areas with no or only very minor anthropogenic disturbances and stressed areas (with discrimination efficiency values). The multimetric index, which includes three different metrics from three different metric categories, distinguishes reference or slightly distorted areas from stressed areas with an efficiency close to 100%. Index values were divided at a five-scale system between one (High) and zero (Bad) for biological evaluation. Further testing and research can be done so that the index will provide a more useful result as a bioassessment tool for decision makers in hydrobiogeographic regions. Also, the index can provide a basis for methods by which river status is assessed based on stress factors.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114668145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the safety of the structures to be built on these rivers, it is necessary to accurately estimate the possible flood discharges for some periods. Many methods have been developed in the literature on this subject. The methods developed depending on the catchment and rainfall characteristics, it is possible to make accurate estimations about the catchment without flow measurement. In this study, an evaluation was made on the estimation success of the methods by trying to determine the flood discharges of a river with indirect and direct methods based on rainfall. Compared rainfall-runoff estimation methods shows Synthetic method is least reliable one among all other estimations. On the other hand, Mockus emerges as the most consistent one through the all evaluated peak flow discharges methods. In this study, the contribution of snowfall to runoff in Turkey for the last 21 years was examined in the light of the observed data and hydrological model results globally provided by NASA. The snow dominant regions of Turkey for the last twenty-one years were revealed, and the ratio of the spatially averaged maximum snow water equivalent to runoff (Rsr) values, an indicator showing snowmelt contribution to runoff, were calculated for two separate periods (2000-2010, 2012-2022). These Rsr values were compared across Turkey to see if they are decreasing in snow-dominated regions. According to the results of the analysis, it was concluded that Rsr values are decreasing in all snow-dominated regions except Aras and Çoruh basins. Rsr values decreased by up to 50 percent in the last 11-year period in regions with high snowfall, such as the upper Euphrates basin.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115644486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, the effects of different parameters on the per capita expenditure of WSAs were examined. Investigated parameters were selected as service time, region, population, and metropolitan municipality (MM) budget. There are 30 different WSAs investigated within the scope of the study. According to the results obtained, WSAs with higher service time and MM budgets have higher per capita expenditures. Moreover, according to the evaluation based on the region, it has been determined that Southeast Anatolia is the region with the lowest average WSA per capita expenditure, while Marmara region had the highest. A positive correlation has been detected between the population and per capita expenditures as well. Relative assessment of WSAs budgets to the MMs budgets has been performed to understand the region-specific budget allocation of MMs to the WSAs. It was found that except Black Sea and Central Anatolia, all other regions allocate similar ratios, around 40%, of the MM budget to the WSAs. Black Sea MMs allocate the highest percent and Central Anatolia MMs allocate the lowest percent budget to the WSAs. According to the results obtained in the study, it has been proposed for WSAs to prepare master plans that cover 30-40 years in order to optimize per capita expenditures and establish a balance between capital and operation and maintenance cost of the investments.","PeriodicalId":224531,"journal":{"name":"Turkish Journal of Water Science and Management","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126887290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
