This lack of familiarity can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings, hindering effective teamwork. Derived from research in social recommender systems, team recommender systems have shown the ability to address this challenge by providing personality- derived recommendations that help individuals interact with teammates with differing personalities. However, such an approach raises privacy concerns as to whether teammates would be willing to disclose such personal information with their team. Using a vignette survey conducted via a research platform that hosts a team recommender system, this study found that context and individual differences significantly impact disclosure preferences related to team recommender systems. Specifically, when working in interdependent teams where success required collective performance, participants were more likely to disclose personality information related to Emotionality and Extraversion unconditionally. Drawing on these findings, this study created and evaluated a machine learning model to predict disclosure preferences based on group context and individual differences, which can help tailor privacy considerations in team recommender systems prior to interaction.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. Amidst the dominant patriarchal societal norms and potential isolations intrinsic to their role, these SAHMs establish a robust, cooperative digital environment, wherein maternal experiences, knowledge, and emotional backings are collectively shared and curated. Through a two-stage interview study, employing chatbot technology over 14 days with 18 participants, we unveiled how SAHMs engage in both tacit and explicit collaborative work within these chat groups, reclaiming their maternal identity and amplifying their parenting confidence. This exploration not only illuminates the critical role of technology in enhancing collaborative maternal work but also propels the discourse on how SAHMs navigate their distinctive needs within specific socio-cultural contexts through technological means. Consequently, this offers a foundational perspective towards crafting technological designs that are empathetically attuned to the lived experiences and needs of SAHMs in Taiwan.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. This thriving community is home to researchers within CSCW, HCI for practice-centered computing, sociotechnical studies, and interdisciplinary groups who provide theoretical, methodological, and/or conceptual contributions on collaborative technologies and practices. GROUP's research community vividly raises the awareness of dimensions of growing importance in our highly connected life, as exemplified by the papers included in this issue. Information sharing and moderation in and across groups and formal organisations continue to call for complex research questions. Collaborative practices that have been the object of concern in GROUP become revisited through the lenses of new technologies, as illustrated by the papers investigating recommender systems and conversational agents in collaborative contexts. More than ever, the Internet is acknowledged as a space for social relationships, see for instance the case of dating apps or mom's chat group in this issue. Reflecting on our densely computing supported practices, ethics for research and design become an essential topic for consideration. The editorial board worked hard to organize this first submission round.\u0000 The call for papers for this issue on GROUP attracted a total of 31 submissions from all over the world, of which 8 papers (25.8 %) were accepted. This issue results from the dedicated volunteer effort of 23 members of the community who served as Associate Chairs (ACs). They all lent their expertise and time to provide insightful feedback to all authors. The Editorial Board can be found on GROUP's track page. As Track Chairs, we are grateful for the community's collective efforts to continue shaping and sharing GROUP's contributions.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. ACM Hum. Comput. However, previous studies on mobile dating apps have not fully taken into account the multiple motivations that users may have. This study aimed to address this gap by conducting semi-structured interviews with 12 Tinder users in South Korea, who reported having multiple motivations for using mobile dating apps. We discovered that participants' motivations using Tinder became gradually expanded but clarified over time. Furthermore, we found that participants rarely disclosed their motivations on their profiles, but heavily relied on implicit cues from other profiles to guess the motivations of others. Based on these findings, we propose design suggestions for improving the design of dating apps to better support users' multi-faceted and variable motivations using mobile dating apps.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. Yet, ways for interacting with CAs are still forming, especially in situations involving more than one human. Starting an interaction with a CA might involve a wakeword and command. Alternatively, it could become active based on implicit requests and context information. Hence, CA designers face a serious dilemma: explicit commands disturb a natural conversation flow, while implicit requests might cause inadequate CA behavior. This study explores this dilemma and discusses observations from a project featuring a CA for financial advisory services. Advisors initially envisioned a CA that ''blends with the background'' and acts on context information. However, when engaging with a CA, they used conversational interactions in one part of the encounter and command-based interactions in another. We discuss this observation and contrast it against previous literature. This insight has implications for design and research.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. ACM Hum. Comput. However, working with this kind of data also presents novel ethical complications for researchers, including issues around privacy, vulnerable populations, and unintended consequences. This paper describes an analysis of 134 papers that rely on Reddit data while also including some discussion of ethical implications and/or considerations by the researchers. Our analysis of these papers reveals common ethical issues and ethically motivated methodological decisions, as described by the researchers themselves, while also exposing some gaps for further ethical contemplation for researchers relying on Reddit data. Based on these findings, we close with a set of recommendations for ethically-informed methods and reflection for researchers working with social data.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. In industry settings, design leaders can play an essential role in promoting ethical design by, for instance, setting visions, developing and advocating values, and providing guidance for design. Through co-design workshops with ten design leaders working in Sweden, we investigated how these professionals envision the cultivation-that is, the development, promotion, and dissemination-of ethically responsible design. Our study outlines what the participants regard as the main problems that stifle ethical design and designing, and how to practically address them. The findings highlight that design leaders consider the lack of awareness about the ethical dimensions of design to be one of the main problems. Additionally, they point to various strategies for addressing the problems, such as communicating compelling reasons for prioritizing ethics, creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for collaborative problem-solving and learning about ethics, and folding ethics into current practices. This could involve, for instance, adding the dimension of ethics to 'design critique' sessions, or re-evaluating portfolio reviews to prioritize diversity in recruitment. We conclude by discussing design leaders' potential for furthering ethically responsible design, and provide a practical tool, a design brief, to support this endeavor.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. This process becomes particularly intricate in cross-boundary teams, which consist of individuals from diverse organizational backgrounds, each bringing in unique informational tools and representation modalities. People share information generated from their personal tools, and the variance in representation of such information makes it challenging to form cohesive group decisions. We conducted workshop studies with 11 knowledge workers to understand current practices of tool adaptation and negotiation in such teams. The results indicate a reluctance to adopt new tools due to perceived violations of social acceptance, often leading to negative judgments of those suggesting new tools. Consequently, participants in cross-boundary teams gravitated towards their preferred tools, complicating the aggregation of inputs and impeding cohesive decision-making. To address these challenges, we developed a platform facilitating sensemaking and decision-making without necessitating compromises on tool preferences. In our mixed-method within-subject experiments, this approach enabled faster, more informed decision-making with reduced mental load and increased engagement through enhanced social interaction and acknowledgment of diverse contributions.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. However, many activists have voiced concerns and shared experiences they understand as considerable censorship on these platforms, under the guise of content governance. In an effort to increase the understanding and transparency of content moderation practices during conflicts, this study investigates the perceived reasons for censorship as understood by activists and the explanations made visible to activists by social media platforms, if any were given. Our case study to examine these platforms-activists relations is the events which occurred in May 2021 in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, which was a significant moment in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and garnered international attention. The over enforcement of content moderation faced by Palestinians and their allies during these events on social media raised concerns about freedom of speech and the role of technology in activism. Our study deepens understanding through findings from a survey of 201 social media users who reported potentially unfair moderation decisions, and from 12 interviews with political influencers to grasp the broader implications of content moderation on activism. The findings of this study indicate a substantial disparity between the official explanations made visible to the activists by the social media platforms, and the reasons as perceived by users. This has significant implications, both socially and for social media platforms -- as CSCW and Group work environments --- on activist groups and the potentialities of democratic discourse. This study serves as an important contribution to the debate on the role of social media content moderation in human rights activism, particularly in conflict zones.","PeriodicalId":224409,"journal":{"name":"Proc. In this contribution, we present work-in-progress on the development of a novel system for facilitation of small group online discussions using an avatar during video conferencing. Four groups of eighth and ninth grades' students interacted with the system, with and without avatar guidance. Our pilot study results show that students reported the avatar-guided learning to be more efficient, easier to follow, and inducing more engagement and active participation. Students also showed better understanding of the learned subject with the avatar guidance, as shown by the post-session questionnaires.
