Trigeminal ganglion (TG) is one of the sensory ganglion providing sensory information from the orofacial region. Ultrastruchral alteration in neuronal population of TG has been reported.Aim of work: Examine the effects of aging on neuronal population, distribution, and satellite ganglionic cells (SGCs) and compare with the TG of young animal. Materials and Methods: Old male Wistar rats (32 weeks old) (250±20g) and young male (4weeks old) (150±20g) were deeply anesthetized with chloroform. To avoid inadvertent mechanical dark neuron formation, each animal was transcardially perfused with 500ml of 4% paraformaldehyde in0.1 M phosphate-buffered saline. The skull cap was cut open and the TG was exposed and removed carefully. The sections were selected according to the systematic random sampling(SRS) and stained with H&E. From each section 10 fields(200×160µm) were selected randomly and the profile of neurons, neuronal shapes, SGCs, and the number of capillary profiles were studied. Results: The measured profile of neurons in the TG of young (17.11± 4.8) and old animals (15.69±4.4) showed a meaningful level of differences(p 0.05). The number of capillary profiles in the TG of young animals (7±2.73) showed a meaningful difference with those of old animals (3.8±0.83) (p < 0.05). Conclusion: With aging neuro-glial population and vascular bed of TG undergo a series of quantitative and qualitative alterations. Precisely aging is associated with decrease in neuronal size and vascular bed while the number of SGCs remains without significant changes. Aging leads to changes in neuronal distribution and likely morphologic alterations in SGCs subpopulation.","PeriodicalId":22420,"journal":{"name":"the egyptian journal of histology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0-0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74584900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Owing to their availability and ability for differentiation, adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are considered a promising line in the tissue regenerative medicine. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been also reported to help in wound healing by decreasing time of complete re-epithelization. However, there was lack in literature about histological details.Aim: The study aimed to compare the effect of ADSCs versus natural VCO in wound healing. Material and methods: Thirty rats were used in three experimental groups, ten rats in each. All animals were exposed to excisional skin wound injury. Group I was used as control untreated group. Group II was injected intra-dermally with 1x106 ADSCs in four injection sites around the wound, while group III was treated with topical application of 0.5 gm VCO ointment. After 2 weeks, all rats were sacrificed. Macroscopic shrinkage of wounds was recorded and compared. Skin samples were harvested and processed for light microscopic examination. Morphometric measurements were done for both epidermal thickness & collagen fibers area percentage. Data was analyzed statistically.Results: Histological examination of group II revealed regenerated epidermis and dermal skin appendages. Masson s trichrome stained sections revealed thick collagen bundles running in different directions. In Group III, epidermis was thin with few developing dermal skin appendages. Masson s trichrome stained sections showed dense parallel bundles of collagen fibers.Conclusion: Virgin coconut oil enhanced skin wound healing. However, ADSCs proved to be more efficient in regaining mature skin structure.","PeriodicalId":22420,"journal":{"name":"the egyptian journal of histology","volume":"12 1","pages":"0-0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83333859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though there are several therapeutic approaches to treat osteoarthritic joints, intra-articular injection provides local drug delivery to the joint with instant pain relief. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the regenerative potential of intraarticular injections of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Botox and Botox + PRP (combined) in treating induced temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis in Albino rats.Design: 42 male adult Wister albino rats were used in this study. All rats were anesthetized and injected with 2mg MIA in both sides of TMJ to induce osteoarthritis. After confirmation of osteoarthritis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the rats were randomly divided to three groups. The right side acted as the experimentally treated group and was injected weekly with either Botox (5 IU/kg diluted in 50 µL saline), 50 µL PRP, or their combination, while the left side acted as control. Tissues were assessed at two and four weeks post-treatment histologically, radiographically and biochemically (using qRT-PCR and ELISA).Results: The treated sides showed statistically significantly higher mean bone area percentages, in addition to lower statistically significantly mean IL-1β and MMP13 levels than the untreated sides. The highest mean bone area % was recorded in the PRP group followed by the combined group of Botox+ PRP. The treated sides recorded a higher mean joint space than the untreated sides that is statistically significant in the Botox group (p < 0.001) and statistically non-significant in the PRP and Botox+ PRP group. Conclusion: This study confirms the regenerative potential of PRP alone and in combination with Botox, which implies that the use of PRP alone or combined with Botox can enhance the healing of conditions as TMJ osteoarthritis.","PeriodicalId":22420,"journal":{"name":"the egyptian journal of histology","volume":"61 1","pages":"0-0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80639400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
