But because of their high fragility, the public can not get too close to them. In this communication we will explain a project that deals with a physical mock-up of Nantes harbor; the mock-up has been built in 1899 and shown in 1900 for the World's Fair that took place in Paris, France. This heritage object is nowadays at the \"Chateau des Dues\" museum in Nantes, France, but shown behind panes. The object has been digitized and a 3D model has been reconstructed. Thanks to a virtual system coupled to a touchscreen with semantic research modules and to a light pointer, it will allow the visitor to better understand the mock-up and the associated history. Moreover, the system will be user-centered: the visitor will interact directly with the digital mock-up and obviously with all the knowledge that allows the contextualization.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"153 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131280049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These principles seek to contribute to developing a specific visual grammar, which is essential if Augmented Reality is to go beyond technological performance to acquire the status of a true media, like all other vision-based media. This visual grammar constitutes a reference based on which designers may then build projects whose narrative and/or emotional content captivates the end-user. The research presented starts from an artistic approach through design and derives generic principles. The starting point is the development of actual AR installations and their presentation to the general public in the form of an evolving exhibition entitled Give Me More. Following two initial presentations in Lausanne and San Francisco, Give Me More was the winner of the DMY International Design Festival Berlin 2010. The designers' work relies on the software and research of the EPFL Computer Vision Laboratory (CVLab) and Dr Julien Pilet. The results have made it possible to define certain rules for visual links between the physical and virtual worlds, simple narrative principles for the animations and a global approach for the design of representation devices. The results also show that there is much work yet to be done in order to devise an initial global visual grammar for Augmented Reality — an absolute prerequisite to turn this into a fully-fledged media.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114537155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This information is typically registered in three-dimensional space, and related to objects and places in the physical world. While individual annotation of objects has historically been a topic of MR research, visualization incorporating multiple related data points or models provides a variety of new research challenges in systems and techniques. For example, photorealistic augmented reality visualization presents data by adapting additionally presented imagery to the real world condition while illustrative visualization techniques aim at enhancing the understanding of augmented scenarios by carefully combining and mediating real and virtual data. Situated visualization techniques present virtual representations of data in relevant locations in the physical scene. A challenge in many of these techniques is the need to correctly communicate the relationships between physical imagery and virtual data.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132670788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The active area of the bi-directional microdisplay consists of nested display and image sensor (embedded camera) pixels surrounded by a second image sensor (frame camera) as well as driving and control circuitry (c.f. Table). The display and image sensor systems are electrically independent of one another, simply interacting via synchronization signals. iStar also includes a developer kit integrating Eye-Tracking software, AR system and application demonstrators. The topic of high-contrast See-Through HMDs still forms an important research topic within the AR community, thereby iStar not only offers a light-weight display solution but it also integrates camera sensors into the display to support Eye-Tracking. With the presented demonstrators the tutorial attendees can evaluate the possibilities and the maturity of the developed technologies. The attendees will get an overview to requirements, solution possibilities and open research topics in the field of microdisplays, optics and software development for the realization of interactive see-Through HMDs. Feedback to learned objectives will be evaluated in questioners.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132730390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With these installations we aimed to make it possible for visitors to discover paintings by Van Gogh in a playful and exciting way. One of the installations features the painting ‘The Bedroom’ which is shown on a large screen, and by using a digitally modified spray-can, visitors can reveal information about the painting normally not accessible, like x-ray, infrared and ultra violet images, or even the back of the painting. We will describe and later discuss these experimental augmented reality installations, and reflect on the lessons learned in order to make interaction with cultural heritage more exciting.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129245239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies in this area however did not draw attention explicitly on design concepts, especially in the possible exploitation of their inherent characteristics to impact game experiences. Based on literature review, this paper identifies the game elements that are designed based on, or around the definitive advantages and/or limitations of handheld AR as a form of pervasive technology that may affect game play experiences. Handheld AR game experiences are examined and can be described through a proposed triarchic interplay of coherent associations comprising of fundamental system, interaction and application levels. Future work will include intricate studies on game design for handheld AR games, so as to extend the current findings with other integrative game design and technological elements.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"173 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124247445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fulfilling the design goals of an application depends, to a large extent, on the successful design of these components. This paper examines the role of text in AR user interfaces from a social semiotic and linguistic perspective. Since analysis of the text in AR applications has mostly focused on aspects such as legibility, placement, occlusion-related issues and exploration of methods to overcome other visual challenges, we suggest that such a social semiotic and linguistic analysis of the textual content can provide insights into user interface and application design for AR researchers and developers. Our analysis suggests that the role of text in AR can differ, and depends, at least in part, on the type of text-image interaction of which it is a part.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130469564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we posit that the audience member's own imagination is an essential third kind of input in defining the full virtuality continuum for MR. It is traditionally accepted that there are two experiential inputs in MR incorporating a combination of stimuli of the real world as well as from virtual artifacts (typically from computers). Using a case study of a MemoryScape Prototype for the Maitland Holocaust Museum, we explore how, in addition to reality and augmented/virtual reality, imagination artistically and scientifically serves as an important third reality to the virtuality continuum to achieve the experience designer's intent for the audience's perception of MR experiences.","PeriodicalId":223956,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality - Arts, Media, and Humanities","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124238113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
