The system was developed to be integrated with existing commercial equipment for smart grids, such as distribution transformer controllers, SCADA systems and Electrical Vehicles Charging Stations. The performance of the smart charging system was evaluated using a typical Portuguese low voltage network as test case, where several EV were assumed to exist. The results obtained prove the effectiveness of the system, as it allowed charging all the EV according to their owners' preferences without increasing the network peak load or creating voltages or overload problems.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133576580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control outline was designed in a more intuitive way, avoiding rigorous mathematical description for predictive strategies, with a practical receding horizon insight. Therefore, a priori knowledge of the driving cycle is not required and the strategy aims actual implementation in real Electronic Control Units (ECUs). The cost function minimizes fuel consumption by setting different weighting factors to the manipulated variables at different drive conditions. Also it tries to sustain the State of Charge (SOC) of the battery. Moreover, a novel feature of the algorithm takes into account whether the vehicle is in urban zone or not, adapting the power distribution accordingly. The controller was validated in MATLAB. Results showed that the algorithm is very sensitive to changes in weighting factor. Furthermore, the insightful approach should be integrated with other communication systems in order to explore its full potential.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"552 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133243519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fully electric city buses offer a solution to these challenges in public inner city transport. At the same time, electric buses open up for a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) provided that the vehicle, charging infrastructure and new operating concepts are designed and considered together. This is based on the fact that high utilisation rates of the expensive battery systems can be reached in commercial electric city bus operation, as opposed to private electric passenger cars. Fully electric city buses can be seen as the first market-based introduction of electrically-driven road vehicles which is justified both in commercial and environmental terms. This paper presents a TCO tool which incorporates the previous factors into a single TCO model and is anchored to component, vehicle and traffic system analysis. Consequently, the model can be utilised in investigating the most economically feasible charging infrastructures and vehicle technology concepts for further development of the electric bus city traffic. The model indicates that a combination of shared opportunity charging systems with possibly multimodal transport components, and fully electric buses with small but high power capable batteries will provide the lowest TCO. Such electric bus systems provide the best added value when operated on city lines and operation sequences with the highest utilisation.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116721390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Looking at today's market, several electric/hybrid cars are proposed for people moving whereas the same is not true for light freight transportation, basically for matters of costs. Nevertheless, the demand for low-consumption low-emission light commercial vehicles is increasing in the last years due to the impressive growth of the e-commerce along with the related logistics management, and the extension of hybrid power-train to light commercial vehicles is under evaluation as it can offer many advantages, one for all the possibility to access limited traffic zones in urban areas. This paper focuses on the development of an e-motor drive system to power the auxiliary services in the zero emission mode of a hybrid electric light commercial vehicle. The study has been developed in the frame of the project “LowEmission Innovative Vehicles for Urban Transport of Goods & People”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment in 2012-2014.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128545124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the traffic data-set available from mobility plans, a spatial and time model, representing the evolution of travel patterns, can be developed considering each vehicle as an agent. The following statistical analysis in space and time of the agent behaviours is used to plan the PEV charging infrastructure of municipalities. The proposed planning methodology has been tested on an European city in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure. Such charging infrastructure, defined according to the mobility needs, has been tested and used to evaluate the customer satisfaction of PEV users in term of charging demand. The proposed charging system has been implemented to estimate the average daily energy profiles for charging the smart city PEV fleet during a typical workday. This has been finally used as one day ahead energy reference profile to develop a market-oriented EV charging strategies. The performance of the proposed smart charging strategies has been finally simulated and compared.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134177618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is composed of two phases and is intended to be used by Distribution System Operator (DSO) to properly manage the network. The effectiveness of the optimization algorithm, described in a previous work, is tested through Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed algorithm has evaluated and compared with a dumb charging strategy. The low voltage CIGRE benchmark grid for 5 years was simulated considering 300 PEVs. In addition, a different set of Monte Carlo simulations was run with random-though reasonable-load profiles in order to test the robustness of the algorithm. The traditional and newly proposed power-systemrelated indices were calculated for all of the simulation sets.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121948740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An experimentally validated model of a battery developed by AllCell Technologies, specific for light electric vehicles (electric scooter or bicycles) is used. Two state of charge estimation algorithms are developed: an extended Kalman filter and an adaptive extended Kalman filter. The adaptive version of Kalman filter is designed in order to adaptively set a proper value of the model noise covariance, using the information coming from the on-line innovation analysis. A comparison between the two approaches is conducted that shows that the adaptive Kalman filter can deal with the problem of incorrect value of the model noise covariance matrix producing lower estimation error.","PeriodicalId":223794,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference (IEVC)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123486388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
