Such large-scale networks however exhibit a degree of complexity that demands model-based simulations as real-world experiments are often not possible. In this work, we methodically characterize blockchain networks by reference to the paradigmatic Bitcoin peer-to-peer network, explore the state-of-the-art protocols, and emphasize this key design space. To this end, we conducted a longitudinal measurement study on the Bitcoin network, from which we extract a comprehensive network model and implement it as part of the bns network simulation framework. We validate the model in comparison to real-world measurements as well as to results from related work. Moreover, we experimentally show how network utilization and miners’ geographical location impact the block propagation characteristics.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127866876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, existing solutions require high hardware costs thus limiting large scale deployments. To address that, we propose a low-cost and scalable solution for sensing physical attributes of soil using IoT based WiFi sensing devices. By understanding variations in WiFi radio signals with channel state information (CSI) and machine learning models, we evaluate the proposed soil sensing system through experiments on physical soil traits such as soil moisture content, soil texture and position. Moreover, we also demonstrate how a mesh network of WiFi sensing devices allows us to predict the physical traits of the soil in the area between each pair of sensors, allowing for an increase in sensing area coverage as nodes are added.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114999708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IP multicast has proven inefficient due to a missing layer-2 support by IoT radios and its synchronous end-to-end transmission, which is susceptible to interference. Information-centric networking (ICN) introduced hop-wise multiparty dissemination of cacheable content, which proves valuable for lossy networks. Even Named-Data Networking (NDN), a prominent ICN, suffers from a lack of deployment.We explore a multiparty content distribution in an information-centric Web of Things built on CoAP. We augment CoAP proxies by request aggregation and response replication, which together with caches enable asynchronous group communication. Further, we integrate object security with OSCORE into the CoAP multicast proxy system for ubiquitous caching of certified content. We compare NDN, CoAP, and our data-centric approach in testbed experiments. Our findings indicate that multiparty content distribution with CoAP proxies performs equally well as NDN, while remaining compatible with the protocol world of CoAP.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128138721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of these MPC efforts assume that the nodes running the computations are also supplying the inputs, which is not a realistic assumption for many real-life applications. In this paper, we extend the SPDZ protocol to enable clients outsource data and computation to the clouds while ensuring the correctness of the results, in addition to integrity and confidentiality of the input and output. We guarantee that the computation among nodes is done correctly by verifying their output’s Message Authentication Codes (MACs) at the end. Specifically, we delegate this task to an honest server. Our approach strives to minimize the burden on clients while enabling cheating detection even when assuming a malicious attack model with dishonest majority.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128139068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continuous growth of \"unmanaged\" consumer IoT devices combined with the rise of work-from-home makes home networks attractive targets for cyber-attacks. Volumetric attacks sourced from a distributed set of vulnerable IoT devices can impact ISPs by deteriorating the performance of their network, or even making them liable for being a carrier of malicious traffic. This paper explains how ISPs can employ IPFIX (IP Flow Information eXport), a flow-level telemetry protocol available on their network, to infer connected IoT devices and ensure their cyber health without making changes to home networks. Our contributions are threefold: (1) We analyze near three million IPFIX records of 26 IoT devices collected from a residential testbed over three months and identify 28 features, pertinent to their network activity and services, that characterize the network behavior of IoT devices – we release our IPFIX records as open data to the public; (2) We develop a multi-class classifier to infer the presence of certain IoT device types in a home network from NATed IPFIX records. We also develop a Trust metric to track network activity of detected devices over time; and, (3) We evaluate the efficacy of our inferencing method by applying the trained classifier to IPFIX traces which yields an average accuracy of 96% in detecting device types. By computing a temporal measure of trust per each device, we highlight (on our testbed) a permanent behavioral change in third of devices as well as some intermittent behavioral changes in others.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124638602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, using multi-hop, multicast, we can facilitate communication between the rescue team and multiple survivors, with whom direct communication is not possible. This paper examines a multi-layer adaptive approach to the problem, the voice data captured from the sender are compressed based on the availability of the bandwidth and contention it might cause in the network. We also perform distributed admission control to ensure that the new streams entering the network do not affect the old ones. To evaluate, we implement the ideas on a testbed of 18 Raspberry Pi equipped with Xbee radios. Our experimental results show that voice data can be multicast to at least 6 destinations with acceptable voice quality in this setup.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124116847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Opportunistic networking offers a way to be independent from a fixed infrastructure and cope with intermittent connectivity by leveraging both the mobility of nodes and their transient radio contacts. This paper presents an environment that facilitates the development of web applications deployed in opportunistic networks built out of smartphones. In order to overcome the technology hindrance regarding smartphones’ ad hoc communication capabilities, our contribution externalizes opportunistic networking to a dedicated device. On top of this support for smartphones, we propose an implementation of a programming model called foglet that allows web browsers to share consistent data structures. This implementation helps achieving decentralized applications distributed across mobile web browsers without relying on any network infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126714408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Luckily, several kinds of services (e.g. video, file transfer) are elastic because they can be degraded and accepted with a lower bit-rate, corresponding to a lower quality of service (QoS) level. In this paper, we aim at maximizing network revenue leveraging elastic service provisioning. To tackle this problem, we propose an integer linear programming model as well as a decomposition method, which selects a QoS level and provisions a lightpath for elastic request. Meanwhile, in order to exploit the spectrum resources of elastic services under a progressive network load, we propose an auto-degrading provisioning scheme to trigger the network reconfiguration for existing lightpaths in an effort to increase the total network revenue. Simulation results validate the revenue improvement by supporting elastic service provisioning scheme in the scenarios of static and progressive network load.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134091848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the limited buffer capacity of mobile nodes leads to buffer overflow and head-of-line blocking. Head-of-line-blocking is caused due to short contact duration, which causes the older messages to be replicated at a faster rate than the newer messages waiting behind them. This unfair replication decreases the message delivery ratio and increases the average delivery delay. For implementation, we categorize a message as new or old and calculate the necessary maximum number of replicas required to deliver a message to the destination. If the instantaneous number of replicas in the network is less than this number, we schedule a message for replication and vice-versa. We demonstrate that our proposed scheme achieves a delivery ratio comparable to a utility-based optimal message drop algorithm with significantly lower overhead.","PeriodicalId":222740,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 46th Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124075424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
