This represents an evolution from the two current encapsulation methods: the native use of the Packetized Elementary Stream (PES) over TS for MPEG-2 encoded applications and, the use of adaptation protocols such as the Multi-Protocol Encapsulation (MPE) and the Unidirectional Lightweight Encapsulation (ULE) over TS for IP-based MPEG-4 encoded content. This paper reviews this evolution and analyses the overhead improvement resulting from this IP-only architecture. This evaluation considers the impact of using RObust Header Compression (ROHC) on the efficiency for DVB-S2 IP/GSE-only transmission.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130267961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The channel is assumed to be Line-Of-Sight where link is a single physical path with complex gain and a large fixed delay (e.g. GEO satellite). SIA achieves interference-free degree of freedom in cellular networks owing to the rich scattering present in the terrestrial channel. In this paper, we show that it is also possible to achieve interference-free degree of freedom in the multibeam satellite system. We propose the geometrical arrangement constraints for both, the beam and the satellite, for full per-station interference-free transmission using finite dimensions. The theoretical potential is shown to be very large compared to the current schemes, which are based on orthogonalization and reuse. However, our results show the necessity of large bandwidth scaling with increase in number of stations. Moreover, we analyze the required scaling in a realistic scenario, which turns out to be unfeasible. Consequently, SIA is theoretically advantageous for a LOS satellite multibeam but practical schemes exploiting alignment in other domains should be developed.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115176775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose efficient techniques to increase the spectral efficiency of cooperative multihop transmission. We analyze the minimum total transmit power needed to achieve a desired end-to-end outage probability for a given rate for several schemes. In the first scheme, incremental relaying, also known as hybrid ARQ, is embedded in the cooperative routing. In the second approach, we propose cooperative multihop communication with spatial reuse, in which interference is treated as noise. The performance of spatial reused scheme can be further improved by employing interference cancelation. Thus, an efficient interference cancelation for cooperative multihop networks is introduced when multiple antenna nodes are used.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122163537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of e-Triage is the efficient electronic on-site registration of the victims in Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) to enable a fast distribution of the information to hospitals for a better handling of victims. To achieve this, e-Triage designs the end device used to register the victims, the database where the information of the victims is saved, and the communications infrastructure necessary to transmit the data, as after a disaster event the terrestrial networks are likely to be overloaded, damaged or not operative, if they ever existed. This paper focuses on the design aspects of a hand-luggage-size suitcase that offers GSM/GPRS and WLAN to rescue teams and victims in the disaster area and connects them over satellite to the disaster-safe area.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124068740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the advanced applications proliferating over such terminals forbids the use of feedback based packet retransmission schemes over satellite due to their high latency, exceeding three times the round trip time. These feedback based packet retransmission schemes also suffer from large throughput degradations to reduce packet drop rates, especially for the large receiver population. In this paper, we propose a joint delay and packet drop rate control protocol over lossy mobile satellite channels using network coding. The suggested protocol employs random network coding at the mobile terminals, within and across different sessions, to generate efficient proactive retransmission packets, without prior knowledge of lost packets at the different users. It also allows the satellite to transmit random network coding combinations of all received packets, to fill the gaps left by packet losses on the uplink channel. By adjusting the timing of these network coded transmissions, the protocol can control packet recovery at any desired delay above one round trip time. The protocol can also control the packet drop rate level by adjusting the network coding rate. The protocol is able to achieve these gains at a much higher system throughput compared to conventional ARQ protocols. Moreover, the protocol do not suffer from the lack of throughput scalability for larger user populations.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127324087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Satellites can be one of the hops in this application. DTN suffers from intermittent disconnections, long delays and has scarce resources. It is a challenge to control the admission to these resources to provide better QoS and ensure optimum resource utilisation. Furthermore, providing fairness to different users who compete to access limited and scarce resources makes the solution even harder. In this paper, we propose a fair novel admission control model for DTN aircrafts applications based on feedback history logging of past admissions. This model will locally estimate the resources and provide fair admissions for users within a group of users in the same area. We will show an analysis of aircrafts fair admission control design for both aircraft initiated and user initiated approaches, which will provide integrated service per flow basis. The paper also presents the initial simulation model using a modified version of DTN2 emulator and DTNperf_2 performance monitoring tool.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127843516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The critical requirement to achieve electromagnetic coherence is to synchronize the initial phases of all local oscillators, introducing minimal overhead and complexity. In the paper we introduce random, deterministic and hybrid algorithms, all based on feedback from the common receiver as the driving force, but with different phase update strategies. Our numerical results show that these algorithms achieve faster convergence time than previously proposed approaches.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117029505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This bound employs the same number of erfc function evaluations as the well-known Union Bound, but it is tighter. For high cardinality constellations, the Union Bound is useless for low signal-to-noise ratios being above 1, while the proposed new bound maintains its significance. This bound can also be extended to the Bit Error Probability computation associated to the same decision problem, and again it is tighter than the Union Bound.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123703744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also there are large channel variations due to the different effects occurring on the L-band mobile link and over-dimensioning of the user terminal or satellite should be avoided. In this context, this paper analyses the interest of using Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) for the mobile link of future aeronautical satellite systems in L band for a European coverage. It analyses in particular the different effects to be compensated, their impact on the link budget and the link dimensioning and performance improvement when using ACM. Finally complementary analyses that would be necessary to further investigate this topic are identified and presented at the end of the paper.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114004787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MUD receiver is used to compensate increased adjacent channel interference due to reduced channel spacing and can simultaneously detect up to six bearers in a 200-kHz satellite subband. With this technique, the channel-spacing can be reduced from 40 kHz to 25 kHz, permitting a capacity increase of 50%. This capacity increase is achieved with an implementation loss comparable to the combined implementation loss and adjacent channel interference allowance for the non-MUD scenario. Differences between simulations and hardware implementations are discussed, as well as observed limitations on performance.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114778734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
