In particular, a modified resource allocation mechanism has been considered in order to implement a Selective Forwarding cooperation scheme within a group of sources working in a land-vehicular scenario. The achieved results are presented in terms of aggregated average throughput for different source loads. The use of cooperation can allow improving system performance depending on the number of cooperators considered and the different channel conditions which they are subject to, and increasing the number of scenarios characterized by different propagation conditions wherein the system can transmit data packets compared to the case of absence of cooperation.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131269948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Non-binary constructions based on ultra-sparse matrices are compared with binary low-density parity-check codes and turbo codes from satellite communication standards, to show that larger coding gains (outperforming the binary competitors by at least 0.3 dB) can be achieved on the AWGN channel, especially in the moderate/short block regimes. Thanks to this excellent performance, non-binary LDPC codes represent an appealing solution for space communications.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131584744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper derives the optimal rain attenuation predictor based on the Maseng-Bakken model. The optimal predictor is obtained by minimizing the mean square error between the rain attenuation and its estimate. We show that this predictor reduces to a bank of filters whose parameters depend on the rain attenuation power spectral density. Simulation results allow us to appreciate the performance of the resulting rain attenuation prediction that is compared with more traditional strategies.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123903493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An extension of the interleaving scheme is investigated to support low latency service requirements for interactive services based on short messages. The first approach is a straightforward extension of the DVB-SH interleaver scheme based on an early-uniform interleaver profile, and the second one is the introduction of a super short interleaver, referred to as molded interleaver, which is embedded inside the standard DVB-SH interleaver. An exhaustive analysis, based on laboratory measurements, shows the benefits of the molded interleaver. Finally a comparison between the modified interleaving strategy and the use of hierarchical modulation is presented.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126928408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We ask if similar performance enhancements can be attained in satellite based communications. Our feasibility study focuses on GEO satellite communication systems including regenerative payloads and multi spot-beam satellites. In addition, we consider LEO satellite constellations with multi-path scenarios. Our analysis reveals that several network coding techniques are worthy of consideration for new generation satellite systems with highly dynamic and unpredictable behavior.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126569990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The altitude measurements are provided by means of a peer to peer network, that is supposed to be based on the evolution of the 802.11 standard for the vehicular environment, namely the WAVE (802.11p). The performance of such a system are investigated for different characteristics of the aiding measurement and for a different number and disposals of the aiding peers. The aiding measurement is obtained starting from the altitude measurements that the other peers in the network send to the aided user. The experiments highlight the need for a parameter that points out the effectiveness and the consistency of the computed aiding measurement, taking into account many parameters such as the number of peers, their distribution in the user cluster and the number of satellites available for the solution computation. To this purpose, a reliability index is defined and the performance of a system that relies on this index are shown.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116517308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the effectiveness of this concept has been safely established for the two way relay channel, far less investigation has touched more sophisticated topologies, neither terrestrial nor satellite. Hence the scalability of such concepts has not yet been duly analyzed. We provide in this paper a first evaluation of this important idea in the satellite environment. Results show that the amplify-and-forward paradigm would scale rather badly and thus some computational capability at the relay (i.e., the satellite or the controlling gateway) are necessary.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134604376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interestingly, the numerous papers on this subject neglect algorithms for the classification of APSK signals, although these are recommended in the DVB-S2 standard. Therefore, a feature-based method for classification of modulation schemes typically used in satellite communications, i.e. PSK, QAM and APSK, is proposed. As features, fourth- and sixth-order cumulants of the input samples are employed in this context.
