On the satellite part, dedicated interleaving and time slicing mechanisms are proposed to mitigate the effects of Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) channel, based on a convolutional interleaver. Depending on the parameters of this interleaver, this mechanism enables to split in time a codeword on duration from 100 ms to about 30s. This mechanism significantly improves the error recovery performance of the code but in literature, exact evaluation at system level of this improvement is missing. The objective of this paper is to propose a prediction method compatible with fast simulations, to quantitatively evaluate the system performance in terms of Packet Error Rate (PER). The main difficulty is to evaluate the decoding probability of a codeword submitted to several levels of attenuation. The method we propose consists in using as metric the Mutual Information (MI) between coded bit at the emitter side and the received symbol. It is shown that, by averaging the MI over the codeword and by using the decoding performance function g such that PER=g(MI) determined on the Gaussian channel, we can significantly improve the precision of the prediction compared to the two other methods based on SNR and Bit Error Rate (BER). We evaluated these methods on three artificial channels where each codeword is transmitted with three or four different levels of attenuations. The prediction error of the SNR-based (resp. the input BER-based) method varies from 0.5 to 1.7 dB (resp. from 0.7 to 1.2 dB) instead of the MI-based method achieves a precision in the order of 0.1 dB in the three cases. We then evaluate this method on real LMS channels with various DVB-SH interleavers and show that the instantaneous PER can also be predicted with high accuracy.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"289 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121827278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The terrestrial component aims at improving the satellite coverage in highly populated areas where satellite communications often suffer from a high blocking factor caused by the buildings. The term “integrated system” refers to a system composed of a multi-beam Satellite Based Network (SBN) and a Complementary Ground Component (CGC) network that re-uses the same frequency band than the satellite's one. This principle is of major interest to improve the spectral efficiency of the overall system and spatially optimize the usage of scarce spectrum resource available at low frequency bands such as L or S-band. Satellite and CGCs are assumed to be controlled by the same resource management entity which allows the coordination of frequency allocation between both components. The understanding of mutual interferences between both components is a key element for the design of such a system taking into account the forecasted balance between the number of terrestrial and satellite users in the system. This paper presents a model of an integrated mobile network composed of a multi-beam satellite, terrestrial base stations and hybrid satellite/terrestrial user terminals. This model is then used for statistical simulations of a continental scale network over Europe in order to analyze interferences between satellite and terrestrial users. The influence of several parameters such as the satellite frequency reuse pattern and the exclusion zone size between terrestrial and satellite cells is then presented.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117063943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model estimates the introduced overhead down to the IP layer, taking into account uncorrelated packet loss on the channel. The model distinguishes between the overhead on the forward link (server to client), mainly due to packet headers and retransmissions, from the overhead on the return link (client to server), which is mainly due to acknowledgments. By carrying out experimental tests, we show that the model predictions match very well with the trial results. Further, Saratoga shows the lowest overhead costs, especially for the smaller files sizes; nevertheless, on the expense of removing mechanisms like flow control and congestion control.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130152310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A closed form expression of exact SER over non identical fading channels is derived for M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). We have derived an expression of joint probability density function (PDF) of the relay channels which is used to obtain the SER expression. Statistical results of Land Mobile Satellite Channel (LMSC) are applied through numerical analysis to obtain the SER of the proposed system. It is shown that high cooperation gain is achieved at high SNR.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127595798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, these satellite services are mainly used for voice, data, internet, and tracking applications. Vehicles are increasingly being equipped with on-board electronic systems, such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Mobile Phone and Digital Communication Systems (GSM, UMTS and DCS), Digital Video and Audio Broadcast Services (DVB-T, DAB), which are usually integrated together, sharing the same multiband antenna. The aim of the present article is to review the antenna solutions used in the automotive markets, providing a literature and a product overview with indications of future trends.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133610391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, if on one hand the market and deployment of fix interactive broadband services definitely benefit from Ka band, on the other hand concerning mobile services the drawback of a multi-spot coverage is the huge effort required for preparing the ground segment infrastructures and the associated technologies. A few examples of the issues Eutelsat is working on are the development of high performances Ka band low profile antennas and satellite systems able to manage the handover from one satellite spot-beam to another, the mitigation of the fading impacting the transmissions to/from mobiles and the dynamic routing of IP traffic. This paper describes the approach adopted by Eutelsat together with some partners in order to solve these problems on different communication layers, in view of the launch of the satellite KA-SAT. Preliminary analysis and results, also built on past experiences done in Ku band, are presented.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125514218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A distributed tracking with consensus algorithm is proposed to handle a time-varying network topology in which every node generates own local tracking estimates and communicates over noisy links. The conditions on the connectivity graph are established so that distributed consensus can be achieved in the presence of noisy communication links when the graph topology is time-varying. The steady-state performance of the proposed distributed tracking with consensus algorithm is analyzed and compared with that of distributed local Kalman filtering with centralized fusion. Simulation results and performance analysis of the proposed algorithm are also given.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126830247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once dedicated to one single type of services, technologies are now offering integrated services: we want to have access to any services anywhere. One challenge is the mobility, with 3G terrestrial offers beginning to be successful. In such a context, satellite systems appear as a real opportunity since they may fill the gap between dense connected areas (city) and low populated areas. Nevertheless, Internet-like communications over satellite segments needs TCP Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEPs) to alter classical TCP on satellite part for a better behaviour. As a drawback, PEPs often induce connection splitting and thus hinder mobility. This paper tackles this issue. After a brief introduction on existing satellite mobile systems and on PEPs mechanisms, we focus on mobility scenarios and propose some architecture elements. A detailed case is settled to illustrate context transfer issues.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115308613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique, named Rotation Invariant Subcarrier Mapping (RISM), is a novel scheme for subcarriers data mapping, where the symbols belonging to the modulation alphabet are not anchored, but maintain degrees of freedom. In other words, a bit tuple is not mapped on a single point, rather it is mapped onto a geometrical locus, which is totally or partially rotation invariant. The final positions of the transmitted complex symbols are chosen by an iterative optimization process to minimize the PAPR of the resulting OFDM symbol. Numerical results confirm that RISM makes OFDM usable even in severe non-linear channels.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129811164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Obviously, such tools have to be as representative as possible of typical satellite telecom systems, but also adaptable to specific research and engineering needs. Emulation testbeds provide a cost effective solution for networking activities in complement to traditional simulations tools that are rather suited in satcom research to system dimensioning evaluation. This paper presents the Platine emulation, briefly presents major projects where is has been used, and details its architecture and main features as well as its controller unit. Finally, future perspectives are stressed, for example in the aeronautical communication context.","PeriodicalId":221214,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 11th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128915020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
