This study aims to estimate the prevalence of second-hand smoke and identify factors associated with exposure to second-hand smoke among adolescents. This study also assesses factors responsible for adolescents’ female-male gap in exposure to second-hand smoke. METHODS: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data was used to estimate the second-hand smoke prevalence. Participants comprised 6287 never-smoking adolescents. Chi-Square tests and modified Poisson regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with adolescents’ second-hand smoke exposure. Fairlie’s decomposition technique was applied to understand the relative contribution of different covariates to the female-male gap in second-hand smoke. RESULTS: Overall, 39.7% of all never-smoking South African adolescents reported exposure to second-hand smoke at home and/or in places other than home. By specific location, the prevalence of second-hand smoke exposure at home and in places other than home was 22.2% and 32.8%, respectively. Second-hand smoke was related to age, grade, and smoking parents or guardians, according to modified Poisson regression models. The data also suggest that the proportion predicting second-hand smoke exposure is 44.56% for females and 37.85% for males, resulting in a 6.71% gender gap. Tobacco advertisement was the most significant contributor to the gender disparity in second-hand smoke exposure. CONCLUSION: Second-hand smoke exposure is still prevalent among South African adolescents. This necessitates a full discussion of strategies aimed at reducing second-hand smoke exposure. Effective smoke-free policies for the home and public areas should be devised and properly enforced. </p>","PeriodicalId":22041,"journal":{"name":"Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy","volume":" ","pages":"14"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2026-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12910765/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146030853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study developed and applied context-specific indicators tailored to the distinct roles of family members and CHWs in addiction services. METHODS: This study utilized baseline data from an ongoing randomized controlled trial conducted in 2024 across 58 communities in Vietnam. Participants included 174 community health workers and 690 family members of people who use drugs. Context-specific support indicators were developed separately for CHWs and family members. Multiple regression analyses were used to identify individual, familial, and work-related factors associated with support for addiction services. RESULTS: Both the community health worker support and family member support scales demonstrated acceptable reliability. Among community health workers, higher job satisfaction and greater confidence in delivering addiction services were significantly associated with stronger support for addiction care. Among family members, higher levels of family functioning and coping were positively associated with support for addiction services. CONCLUSION: Findings highlight the potential of enhancing community health workers’ confidence and job satisfaction, as well as promoting family functioning and coping, as actionable strategies to strengthen addiction service systems and inform future interventions. Many barriers to addiction treatment exist and are often related to poor provider-client relationships possibly caused by stigma, burnout and differentiating beliefs and attitudes among addiction treatment providers. This study investigated the prevalence of provider-based stigma (PBS) including four stigma variants (dangerousness, blame, social distance, fatalism) and its relationship to burnout, job satisfaction, attitudes towards addiction treatment approaches, and beliefs regarding addiction aetiology in a sample of addiction treatment providers. METHODS: Cross-sectional online survey was completed by 64 addiction treatment providers currently working in Scotland. Online survey was comprised of validated and adapted measures, extensive statistical analysis was conducted, including ANOVAs and Regressions to examine the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: Over 30% of participants had elevated scores on PBS variants dangerousness and blame and these were found to predict higher acceptance of abstinence-based treatments, and lower endorsement of harm reduction approaches (dangerousness: b = 0.41, p < 0.001; blame: b = 0.23, p = 0.010). Burnout was high in this sample, and PBS variant blame predicted higher client-related burnout (b = 7.35, p = 0.009). Moreover, the belief in the disease model predicted higher acceptance of abstinence-based treatments (b = 0.30, p < 0.001), whereas belief in the psychosocial model predicted higher acceptance of harm reduction-based treatments (b = -0.25, p = 0.008). Lastly belief in the disease model predicted higher scores on dangerousness (b = 0.19, p = 0.016) and fatalism (b = 0.29, p = 0.002) PBS variants. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study provide insights for policy and addiction treatment improvements. Efforts to alleviate addiction treatment providers stigmatising attitudes, especially perceptions of people who use drugs as dangerous, blameworthy, and incapable of recovery are needed. Interventions and policy improvements need to include stigma reduction workshops and consider addiction treatment providers attitudes and beliefs to limit treatment bias, stigma and burnout to foster better relationships between clients and the workers who support them. </p>","PeriodicalId":22041,"journal":{"name":"Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy","volume":" ","pages":"3"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2026-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12829077/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146019734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emotional dysregulation and impulsivity are central processes in both disorders. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies play a key role in the development and maintenance of these disorders. The standard treatment for emotion regulation is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT); its implementation is often a challenge, but transdiagnostic groups can facilitate it. Due to the lack of data available on these groups in addictology, our study aimed to determine whether emotional dysregulation and impulsivity are improved with the implementation of transdiagnostic DBT groups. METHOD: Eight two-month cycles of transdiagnostic DBT groups occurred between 2021 and 2023. The 35 participants had substance use disorder (89%), addictive behavior disorder (14%), or eating disorder (20%). Other psychiatric comorbidities, especially borderline personality disorder (42.9%), were also present. The evolution of questionnaires completed by the participants and the attrition rate were analyzed. RESULTS: The dropout rate was 21%. During DBT, the improvement reached high effect sizes for emotional dysregulation (d = 0.9), positive cognitive emotional regulation (d = 0.978) and negative cognitive emotional regulation (d = 1.04), and medium effect sizes for impulsivity (d = 0.586) and mindfulness (d = 0.766). Depending on the cycle, improvement in emotional dysregulation ranged from 0% to 31%, and retention ranged from 12% to 100%. An association was found between attrition rate and therapists’ level of experience (effect size = 0.320, p = 0.001). DISCUSSION: While DBT is known to be effective on emotional dysregulation and impulsiveness, two particularly important functions in addictology, we found that their improvement can occur as soon as this therapy is implemented despite challenges present. These results suggest that the transdiagnostic format, which facilitates DBT implementation, preserves DBT’s effects. </p>","PeriodicalId":22041,"journal":{"name":"Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy","volume":" ","pages":"12"},"PeriodicalIF":3.4,"publicationDate":"2026-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12903726/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146004173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is a randomized trial evaluating the behaviour support interventions among adult smokeless tobacco (SLT) users. METHOD: A total of 100 patients who visited the dental hospital were exclusively using smokeless tobacco for at least 6 months were included in the study. The participants were willing to quit the habit within 30 days. Fagerstörm test for nicotine dependence level and the transtheoretical stage of change was assessed at the baseline. The study arm consisted of (a) Behavioural Support Intervention For Smokeless Tobacco Cessation In South Asians (BISCA) face-to-face behavioural support and the control arm consisted of (b) Self-help material (A modified self-help manual is given that is used by the Ministry of Family Welfare Government of India) in a dental setting. RESULTS: Almost all of the Minnesota Tobacco Withdrawal Scale characteristics were better for the BISCA group except for increased appetite or weight gain, depressed or sad mood and insomnia or sleep problems. It implied the effectiveness of BISCA in the treatment of SLT users. The proportion of biochemically verified abstinence in the BISCA group was 56%, and 52% in the self-help group. There are significant barriers to accessing evidence-based treatment and appropriate wrap-around services for pregnant and postpartum individuals and their families. These challenges sit at the intersection of multiple incongruent and fragmented systems, including criminal justice, child welfare, childcare, health insurance, and physical and behavioral health treatment. To support and improve outcomes for this population, with their unique medical and social complexities, we seek to understand how individuals access Medication for Opioid Use (MOUD), barriers to MOUD treatment, and how the policy environment supports or hinders care delivery and recovery. METHODS: To understand this, we use in-depth interviews with interest-holders from across a mid-Atlantic state with a county-administered system, including prenatal care providers, county-level administrators, treatment programs, and pregnant and parenting people. From these interviews, we develop composite narratives that merge and share findings through the lens of four separate perspectives: an obstetrician, a director of a treatment organization, a local government official, and a parenting person who experiences opioid use disorder. We map these narratives onto the World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Determinants of Health to illustrate the mechanisms for achieving positive health outcomes and demonstrate opportunities for policy engagement. RESULTS: The narratives highlight the social and structural determinants of health and illustrate the policy barriers that prevent pregnant and postpartum people with opioid use disorder from accessing care. We highlight policies that govern criminal justice and substance control, child welfare, and childcare systems, as well as policies related to health insurance and treatment center operations. This study aimed to assess the impact of smoking, marital, and employment status influence public stigma toward people who use heroin among Jordanian adults. METHODS: A nationwide, cross-sectional online survey was conducted in April 2024 among Jordanian adults aged 18–65. Participants were recruited via Facebook and completed a questionnaire assessing stigma using five items adapted from validated scales. Demographic variables included smoking status, marital status, employment status, age, and region. Associations between demographics and stigma were examined using chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS: A total of 908 participants completed the survey. Overall, respondents expressed strong stigma toward people who use heroin, with high perceived risks of career damage, social rejection, and legal trouble. Non-smokers, married individuals, and retired participants reported significantly stronger negative views compared to smokers, unmarried individuals, and students, respectively. No significant differences were observed based on sex. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking, marital, and employment status are associated with public stigma toward people who user drugs in Jordan. There is reason to question, however, whether RMC-PCs are as effective for those who have been recently incarcerated or for those holding a minoritized racial identity, such as people of color. METHODS: We examined data from a United States-based randomized controlled trial of RMC-PCs compared to a control condition among primary care patients with SUDs (N = 266). RESULTS: Multilevel analyses of 4-wave data (3, 6, 9, and 12 months after baseline) indicated that RMC-PCs were more effective than the control condition, especially early in the 12-month study period. The relative effectiveness of RMC-PCs was stronger, however, for participants with fewer days in jail just prior to baseline as well as for White participants (versus participants of color). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest the utility of examining potential mediators of these moderated effects in future research as well as tailoring SUD interventions to better meet the needs of these populations.
