Recently, there has been interests in extending MIMO techniques to exploit the elevation dimension in addition to the azimuth dimension. In this paper we developed a rank-restricted representation of MIMO channels. Based on the cascading structure of the representation, we propose a two-stage precoding framework for 3D MIMO processing. Several design options under this framework are discussed. System-level performance evaluation is conducted for various antenna configurations. Simulation results show that significant cell-edge and median user throughput gain can be achieved compared to the legacy MIMO system.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130409344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The implementation issues of channel reciprocity based feedback in TDD are discussed, and a two-dimension feedback mechanism for FDD is proposed where the horizontal and vertical domain channels are reported separately. To better accommodate the demand, the computing power and networking components in data centres are being upgraded regularly, leading to higher energy bills. Among many works on energy efficiency, very little attention has been paid in making multimedia streaming systems energy efficient. In this paper, we propose E2Stream, an energy-efficient multimedia streaming system. Unlike existing proposals, E2 Stream utilizes resources in both the data-centre and end-user devices in order to reduce the power consumed by the entire streaming system. Our evaluation results, based on energy profiles from real devices, show that E2Stream can dynamically choose energy-efficient source to stream the content, which effectively reduces the energy consumptions among end-user devices and routers involved in the streaming session.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122735934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such cooperation is enabled by vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure wireless communication. These remotely piloted or preprogrammed aircraft are envisioned for applications in numerous civil settings, including industrial monitoring, scientific data gathering, agriculture, public safety, and search and rescue. Many other applications - presently unforeseen - will inevitably also arise. These vehicles, also known as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and by the unfortunate misnomer of \"drones,\" must be integrated into the national airspace system in the United States, and into the airspace worldwide. A natural concern in the use of UAS is safety, and this has direct implications for the control and non-payload communication (CNPC) systems that must be used to operate UAS. Similarly, navigation and surveillance functions must be made more reliable and more accurate. Because of these factors, many UAS research, development, testing, and standardization efforts are underway by governments, industries, and academia. Despite the fact that piloted civil aircraft have been flying safely for decades, UAS CNPC presents distinct new challenges in the form of different flight profiles, e.g., low-elevation flights and more high-dynamic maneuvers; wider required bandwidths, e.g., for video; and different ground site characteristics such as locations in cluttered areas and lower elevation antennas. In this paper we first review our work for NASA on the characterization of the UAS air-ground channel, and our ongoing efforts in evaluation of radio technologies and UAS networking performance. We highlight related significant work in the area and identify the newest challenges in UAS communications and networking. The final part of the paper presents information on trends and opportunities in the vibrant field of UAS communications and networking.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123084472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the explosive growth of online information, a key issue for web search service is to better understand user's need through the short search query to match the user's preference as much as possible. However, due to the lack of the personal information in some scenario and the huge calculation when seeking for relevant user group, personalized search becomes a quite a challenging problem. In this work, we propose a novel scalable framework based on multimodal Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) to do the user intent mining and prediction. This scalable framework works in an unsupervised manner, and is flexible to various situations regardless of the amount of individual information, in other words, it can handles scenarios without personal history information or limited personal history information, the more individual data the better accuracy of user intent prediction and more capable to reflect the individual's interests changing. The framework outputs a binary representation for each query log, thus to some extent, could solve data sparsity problem and reduce the computation complexity when looking for users with similar interests. The experiment results shown that, the model can learn reasonable user intent category during the learning procedure, according to the qualitative analysis of the top ranked context and websites for each class. And it can get a competitive performance when no individual data is offered. Moreover, by offering more individual data (10 history queries), the overall performance improves up to 10% of precision.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116982820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In previous techniques, a small number of unreliable bits in a packet were toggled in order to change negative acknowledgement (NAK) into acknowledgement (ACK). The difficulty of using these techniques is that the worst case complexity is still high because the number of possible error patterns is 2NUR where Nur denotes the number of the unreliable bits. In this paper, we define the optimality of a set of error patterns when the set size as well as the number of unreliable bits is fixed. We then show that the optimal set of error patterns can be found with feasible computational complexity even when Nur is in the order of hundreds.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"296 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125754751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is usually difficult to obtain the data of real spectrum usage due to the constrains of radio monitor capability and cost. In this sense, we believe grass-root based spectrum data collection is important. In this paper, we propose a grass-root based spectrum database architecture by encouraging network users to monitor radio environment data and share it with the database through integrating cognitive radio network as well as heterogeneous network. We apply coalitional game to formulate the cooperation among autonomous network users and design an effective algorithm to improve individual benefit of the users in the game. The details of game property is analyzed, and the algorithm can yield stable partition of coalition for network users, through which each user can obtain improved benefit. Simulations have been performed to demonstrate the advantage of the proposal. The proposed spectrum data collection in user participation is expected to enhance radio frequency optimization for self-organization based wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127320059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is essential to understand where, when and how much digital data is generated, since upstream traffic is progressively growing, in volume and share. One of the main challenges is how to work with continuous time digital communication services for mobile entities. It may become impractical or even infeasible to work in continuous time, when dealing with a large number of data generating entities. Moreover, it is unclear how to integrate the contribution of these services into a common framework, together with other Smart City oriented services. This integration would contribute to understand distributed digital data activity in cities in a holistic way. Consequently, we analyze how different ways of discretizing services to work with a large number of vehicles perform, compared to the continuous time case. We also integrate them into a common framework for quantifying digital activity in metropolitan areas. The experiments are carried out using empirically collected spatio-temporal vehicle positioning data in a real geographical scenario.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126746996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
