The group conversations are identified by hashtags present in tweets where the number of members in the group interacting is at least two. The classifications are 1) response, 2) referral, 3) broadcast and 4) retweet. We collect nearly 354,000 tweets for these two TV programs. Using one-way analysis of variance, we examine the four tweet categories collected during second screen based group interactions. Our findings indicate that most group-based interaction occurs when the TV show is not being transmitted. The prevalent conversational pattern observed is referral tweets. There are many implications for those interested in understanding social conversation around mass media in the emerging second screen environment.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121876426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

User Adaptive Video (UAV) is a new technique that exploits the perceptual limits of the human visual system to modulate a video stream's bit rate based on the viewing conditions, such as viewing distance and ambient illuminance, resulting in significant bandwidth reduction without perceived loss of quality to the user. UAV presents an opportunity to significantly improve the efficiency of DASH by not requesting unnecessarily high bit rate video. Due to the random access nature of the Wi-Fi MAC protocol and the intricate interaction among DASH traffic flows, it is not clear whether UAV will manifest its benefits in Wi-Fi networks. We design UAV-enabled DASH (UDASH) and evaluate its performance in Wi-Fi networks. We show that UDASH in a Wi-Fi network has the benefits of not only improving the video streaming performance such as reducing the rebuffering probability, but also enhancing the performance of cross traffic. We also give the conditions under which the benefits can be achieved. Simulation results confirm that the benefits of UDASH are significant.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127586418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Location Based Services (LBS) are becoming important to the success and attractiveness of next generation wireless systems. To access location-based services, mobile users have to disclose their location information to service providers and third party applications. This raises privacy concerns, which have hampered the widespread use of LBS. Location privacy mechanisms include Anonymization, Obfuscation, Policy Based Scheme, k-anonymity and Adding Fake Events. However most existing solutions adopt the k-anonymity principle. We propose an entropy based location privacy mechanism to protect user information against attackers. We look at the effectiveness of the technique in a continuous LBS scenarios, i.e., where users are moving and recurrently requesting for Location Based Services, we also evaluate the overall performance of the system with its drawbacks.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131852648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present a new coding scheme and file format that is tailored to the presentation of single-color products. A JPEG image file can be transcoded into this new format leading to substantial reduction in file size (Average of 28%) with practically no quality degradation. We describe how we can take advantage of several features found in images for product presentation to improve coding efficiency. Objective and subjective performance measurements are presented to demonstrate that little quality degradation is incurred after transcoding.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133588579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To maintain the energy need of the existing systems, researchers are aiming to improve usage and savings of available resources and systems. For example, power metering system has been proposed to decrease the energy wasting. The purpose of this system can be explained as limiting the energy consumption in some cases like standby or while switching programs or devices which the system is installed on. By blocking the unnecessary consumption of energy, profits and savings are targeted. In this work, a new power meter system based on ZigBee technology is designed and implemented to obtain a more efficient structure and reduce the number of disadvantages of the existing technologies. In SmartPlug, the MCU was moved into the plug from outer environment and shifting the host to a spectator to eliminate user based faults and/or problems. Moreover, the proposed structure enhances the safety by detecting the sudden voltage fluctuations and preventing the possible damages of end-devices. In addition to these, we prove that cutting of stand-by powers and limiting the energy consumption by arranging the working hours of devices based on energy unit prices provide efficient, right and cheap usage of the energy.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114544556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the 3-dimensional propagation characteristics with the UEs located at different heights have been less explored. In this paper, we present field measurements on the indoor-to-outdoor (I20) uplink channel in a typical urban macro-cellular (UMa) scenario, with the emphasis on the spatial power profile in the elevation domain. The base station (BS) was installed on the top of a 5-floor building and the UE was located at 120 positions on the 1st to the 4th floors in 3 different buildings 120 to 150 m away. Using the channel sounder equipped with uniform planar antenna arrays, the elevation angle/spread of arrival (EoA/ESA) of the multipath components (MPCs) arriving at the BS were measured. Furthermore, it is found that EoA and ESA of the MPCs can be well modeled by Laplacian and Lognormal distributions, respectively, and the distribution parameters have no dependency on the UE height in this scenario. Finally, the model parameters are given based on our measurement data. This work can extend the current 2D channel models to support the design of UE direction estimation, beamforming, and sectorization in the elevation domain.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121414691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We hypothesize that three offline social factors, namely, stature, relationship strength, and egocentricity may also play an important role in driving users' interactions online. Therefore, we study the influence of these three social factors in online interactions by analyzing the transitivity in triads or three-way relationships among users. Analyzing transitivity through the lens of triad census for four popular social networks, namely, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Slashdot, we find that: (i) users' interactions are largely influenced by intermediary relations, which enhances the mediators' stature; (ii) the strength of offline relationships plays a salient role in transitivity of relations online; and (iii) egocentricity, embodied in over-active and popular users, has a significant effect on the dynamics of online interactions.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129434111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first notice that economic considerations have dictated the transition of satellite communications services among different frequency bands. The short-term demand for capacity drives the potentially increased use of Ka-band satellites. However, Ku-band satellite transponder enjoys lower cost as compared with its Ka-band counterpart. There are many Ku-band linearly polarized (LP) satellites covering different service areas for fixed satellite services (FSS), which constitute the majority source of revenue in satellite services. On the other hand, circularly polarized (CP) terminals, some of which have been serviced by Ka-band satellites, are more economical in manufacturing and installations as compared with compatible LP terminals. The major bottleneck is the concurrent use of CP and LP formats in conventional communication systems. In this paper we present a class of WaveFront (WF) Multiplexing (muxing) techniques that revitalize CP-to-LP and LP-to-CP links and enable satellite operators to cost-effectively service VSAT users employing CP waveforms, either fixed or mobile, via Ku band LP transponders. Coherent power allocation becomes feasible for satellite communications between assets using incompatible polarization and WF muxing. WF muxing makes it operational for CP VSAT terminals to access LP or CP space assets equally well. WF muxing also allows satellite transponders, either in LP or CP format, to concurrently service both LP user and CP user communities equally well for spectrum efficiency.","PeriodicalId":219966,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC)","volume":"30 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120931911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
