We assume that the array consists of vertical and non-vertical sub-arrays. The performance of the sub-optimal procedure is evaluated analytically and numerically and is compared to the performance of the optimal one. The sub-optimal method involves a two dimensional search procedure instead of a three dimensional search in the optimal one. Numerical examples with channel parameters which are typical to shallow water source localization, show that the sub-optimal performance loss is 0-3 dB, depending on the scenario conditions.","PeriodicalId":219797,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117322366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the table-top FEL oscillator constructed in our laboratory the electrons travel along a planar undulator and an axial magnetic field, and interact with TEM-mode electromagnetic waves. In this experiment, microwave output is observed at /spl sim/40 cm wavelength. This radiation is much longer than the undulator period (2 cm). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an FEL operation in the UHF regime. For electron beam energy of /spl sim/3 keV, we observe also microwave output at /spl sim/5 GHz. This emission is related to the cyclotron resonance due to the axial magnetic field. These experiments may lead to the development of new high-power UHF and microwave radiation sources.","PeriodicalId":219797,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122382065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The state equations are solved by applying the conditions of periodicity. The final results are obtained directly without following the transient changing cycle by cycle which starts with the first cycle. The analysis is based on the symmetrical and periodical behaviour of the inverter (it is assumed that the switching times of thyristors are equal). The advantage of this analysis is that the solution is achieved in a closed form. This method is illustrated by an example of a parallel resonant DC-to-AC inverter analysis in its steady-state operation. The results are also compared with those obtained by applying Fourier series analysis. In both methods the general expressions of the inductor current, capacitor voltage and the input/output power and efficiency as a dependency of the ratio between the switching period and the resonant period, are obtained. The region of the inverter stable behaviour (reliable thyristor switching) is determined.","PeriodicalId":219797,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125518014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approximation of closed loop properties of low damping resonance is presented, together with a combined pole-placement transfer value equations. A design approach is suggested for determining the low frequency performance by pole specifications and the high frequency resonance handling by frequency domain considerations.","PeriodicalId":219797,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132269294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the distortion associated with reconstructing the source sequence so as to minimize the distortion measured by d/sub 1/(x,x/spl circ//sub 1/), which is in general different from d/sub 0/(x,x/spl circ//sub 0/). Using a random coding argument we derive an upper bound on the resulting distortion. Applying this bound to blocks of source symbols we construct a sequence of bounds which are shown to converge to the least distortion achievable in this setup. This solves the rate distortion dual of an open problem related to the mismatched capacity of channels. Addressing a different kind of mismatch, we also study mean-squared-error description of non-Gaussian sources with Gaussian codebooks. It is shown that the use of a Gaussian codebook to compress any ergodic source results in an average distortion which depends on the source only via its second moment. The hardest source to describe is the memoryless Gaussian source, and it is best described using a Gaussian codebook. Once a Gaussian codebook is used, we show that all sources of a given second moment become equally hard to describe.","PeriodicalId":219797,"journal":{"name":"Eighteenth Convention of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in Israel","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127338995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
