In pursuit of profit HKDL tried to “indigenize” or localize to the community by using a local workforce, consumption, language, and cultural space accommodations. There is much written about indigenization but not from the worker’s perspective. Based on interview data of a small sample of Hong Kong Disneyland workers, this case study investigates the workers’ assessment of whether “indigenization” practices are successful or not. Findings show that workers are ambivalent about indigenization citing negative public relations, and adverse mainland Chinese tourist interactions. The workers feel that true indigenization is complicated by various factors such as perceptions of ethnic and national superiority complexes, ambivalence, and continuing unequal treatment.","PeriodicalId":219027,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Business Anthropology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131221163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reviews the domestic migration studies from both China and other countries and proposes to use the narrative and approach of urban immigrant instead of rural labor. Urban immigration should be seen as a process of social development led by the integration of urban immigrant and finally leading to the deconstruction of rural-urban duality. The change of narrative and approach from rural labor to urban immigrant has certain theoretical and countermeasure significance for understanding the process of population migration and urbanization in China.","PeriodicalId":219027,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Business Anthropology","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133543913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the process of adapting to its natural ecosystem and sociocultural background, all ethnic groups have formed their own unique ethnic cultures. In cross-cultural and cross-regional economic activities, the influence of many non-economic factors such as ethnic cultural values cannot be ignored. It is on this premise that the book “The Principles in Xiangji Operation” combines western economic anthropology theory with China's reality through field survey data from Guizhou, and puts forward the theory of xiangji (interphase) management. This way, it has successfully introduced a theoretical system of economic anthropology with Chinese characteristics.","PeriodicalId":219027,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Business Anthropology","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128251553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a rising force of overseas investment, Chinese enterprises are increasingly encountering local challenges stemming from CSR. This paper is an ethnographic study of a Chinese gold mining company in contemporary Ghana in regard to CSR knowledge and practice. It investigates how multiple actors negotiate understandings of CSR in a Chinese gold mining company as compared with an American gold mining company. The research was conducted near the mining sites located in Odumase of Eastern region and Juaso of Ashanti region of Ghana during 2016. Its CSR practice was compared with that of the Akyem mining site operated by an American mining corporation. Through ethnographic fieldwork, this paper contextualizes the construction of diverse understandings of CSR among multiple actors in this Chinese investment project. It also demonstrates how both formal and informal engagements with affected communities constitute its CSR practice. Based on a case study and comparison with an American mining company, this paper finds that large-scale Chinese mining operation in Africa is receptive of the concept of CSR but its practice is very unique.","PeriodicalId":219027,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Business Anthropology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125589173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Doing so involved affirming that people are emotionally and uniquely connected to their cultures and heritage. Many indigenous, ethnic, and traditional peoples continue to respond in a manner reminiscent of Romantic nationalism. Understanding and appreciating these parallels can be a valuable tool for those related to economic development projects that involve such peoples. This paper provides business anthropologists with a useful overview of Romantic Nationalism and its relevance in today’s world.","PeriodicalId":219027,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Business Anthropology","volume":"26 35","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120837847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
