Thus, efficient equipment is required to characterize and model the UWB propagation channel. This paper proposes a basic idea to convert a SIMO wideband channel sounder into an UWB channel sounder. These minor changes were applied to the France Telecom R&D channel sounder. A new analytical method based on a characteristic function technique is proposed for precisely calculating the bit error probability of time-hopping pulse position modulation ultra-wideband systems with multiple access interference. The analytical expression is verified by simulation and used to assess the accuracy of the Gaussian approximation. Our method is based on the estimation of time of arrival of the first multipath. It averages the received pulses over multiple time frames, performs a correlation operation on the averaged signal, and detects the peak of the correlated signal. The impulse response of the arrangement at a single measurement position is called an A-scan. The data of an A-scan is processed with the novel wavelet based pulse reconstruction to determine five parameters of the pulse approximation. The width of different copper plates can be characterized by the dilatation of the reconstructed pulse which is one of the five parameters. To get real radar reflection data an ultra-wideband impulse radar setup was used. The presented results testify, that there is a direct link between the parameter dilatation factor and the width of a centered copper plate. To verify the results of the measurement analysis a simulation tool was developed. In this paper, two basic types of switch functions are presented, single-pole multiple-throw switch elements and matrix switch elements. This sub-band generator is capable of producing multiple frequency bands, enabling sub-band generation from 3 to 10 GHz with nanosecond switching times. The circuit analysis of the complete transceiver is used to set parameters of components. The analysis indicate that a LNA gain of 20 dB, baseband amplifier gain of 45 dB, matched filter accuracy of five bits, ADC accuracy of two bits, a 60 dB dynamic range of the multi-frequency generator, and front end offset voltage of less than 30 mV is required to achieve a 10 dB SNR. The key idea for the proposed method is to extract the frequency components of the received signal and to perform signal processing in the frequency domain. The proposed receiver architecture relaxes the speed requirement of analog-to-digital converters and is highly suitable for a multipath rich environment such as UWB. The aim of this analysis is to define a generic UWB model, in terms of signal shape, modulation scheme and channel representation. In this paper, we present a novel strategy for reducing the number of operations required for the coarse acquisition of pseudo-noise sequences (at the chip level), thus speeding up the overall synchronization process.
