Zaghloul","doi":"10.1109/UWBST.2003.1267804","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/UWBST.2003.1267804","url":null,"abstract":"This article develops an optimal pulse shaping filter design framework, which minimizes UWB signal interference to existing (or legacy) narrow band signals, such as global positioning system (GPS), satellite communication systems, etc. A 2-stage optimal filter design procedure is proposed. In the first stage, a transmission filter is optimized to satisfy an imposed transmission mask, which minimizes UWB interference to a tolerable level. In the sub-sequent optimization stage, a recovery filter is optimized to best recover the transmitted signal. The effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated with an example, in which FCC indoor transmission spectral mask is used to design the transmission filter. In that paper, a single-user receiver based on a bank of correlators and a sliding window integrator was proposed. However, the radio propagation channel also introduces correlations, which have a significant effect not taken into account by the Hoctor-Tomlinson receiver. It is demonstrated that a specific post-processing technique, including a passband Hermitian reconstruction (PHR) and an estimation algorithm based on the frequency domain maximum likelihood criterion (FDML), makes it possible to reach super-resolution from band-limited measurements. This model is based on an image model; however, it treats the virtual point sources in the image model as clusters. The simulation results show this model introduces physically meaningful spreading in the mean excess delay and root-mean-squared delay spread. It is shown that if a position-aware routing protocol and a power-aware routing metric based on ranging measurements are adopted, emitted power levels as well as multi-user interference are significantly reduced. The position-aware strategy is compared with standard solutions based on the minimization of the number of hops and on-demand routing. Results are presented for various transmission ranges, i.e. network connectivity conditions.
