Digital beamforming used jointly with an active antenna allows a full power, frequency and beamforming flexibility. This flexibility must be utilised with efficient and fast computing resource allocation algorithms, especially in a MEO use-case. As MEO satellites move with respect to Earth contrary to GEO satellites, they experience very diverse user distributions and must dynamically adapt the resources allocated to each user. This paper proposes an algorithm based on SDMA which leverages the payload flexibility with a joint power, frequency and beamforming optimisation. The algorithm provides a fair resource allocation to users, accounting for their respective required spectral efficiency.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124171190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reasons, it is necessary to understand, among other meaningful aspects, how an electromagnetic (EM) waves propagates over the Martian environment and build a model to properly simulate communication systems under realistic channel conditions through common commercial software. This contribution aims to evaluate large scale propagation phenomena on the Martian surface in order to determine a realistic Martian channel model. First, the surface morphology is obtained through the use of a high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) representing the Gale crater. Then, the DEM is converted into a tile-based structure in which the tiles are the DEM's pixel, whose dimension is set according to the DEM's resolution. Each tile vertex is interpolated with the vertex of the nearest tile, thus constructing the walls of the 3D structure. The 3D structure is characterized, from an electromagnetic viewpoint, through the estimation of the complex permittivity. By exploiting a ray tracing approach and simulating an EM signal emitted by an isotropic antenna, the line of sight (LOS) power is computed over the 3D structure. From the received power in the selected Martian location, we estimate path loss samples for different distances between transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). The samples are averaged for each distance and the path loss exponent, which represents the roughness of the terrain, is obtained by finding the path loss curve which better fits the averaged samples. Finally, the shadow standard deviation is evaluated and analyzed with respect to the considered Martian location.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124482307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Targeting satellite-based massive machine type communications and internet of things scenarios, our focus is on a common channel shared among a large number of terminals via a fully asynchronous ALOHA protocol to attempt delivery of short data packets. In this setup, we test the performance of two algorithms, neural networks and random forest, which are shown to provide substantial improvements over traditional techniques. Excellent performance is demonstrated in terms of detection and false alarm probability also in the presence of collisions among user transmissions. The ability of machine learning to extract further information from incoming signals is also studied, discussing the possibility to classify detected preambles based on the level of interference they undergo.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116905023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main design challenge here is setting optimal system parameters such as number of serving beams, beam directions and sizes, and transmit power. This paper aims at developing a tool, multibeam satellite traffic simulator, that helps addressing these fundamental challenges, and more importantly, provides an understanding to the spatial-temporal traffic pattern of satellite networks in large-scale environments. Specifically, traffic demand distribution is investigated by processing credible datasets included three major input categories of information: (i) population distribution for broadband Fixed Satellite Services (FSS), (ii) aeronautical satellite communications, and (iii) vessel distribution for maritime services. This traffic simulator combines this three-dimensional information in addition to time, locations of terminals, and traffic demand. Moreover, realistic satellite beam patterns have been considered in this work, and thus, an algorithm has been proposed to delimit the coverage boundaries of each satellite beam, and then compute the heterogeneous traffic demand at the footprint of each beam. Furthermore, another algorithm has been developed to capture the inherent attributes of satellite channels and the effects of multibeam interference. Data-driven modeling for satellite traffic is crucial nowadays to design innovative communication systems, e.g. precoding and beam hopping, and to devise efficient resource management algorithms.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127051723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such frequency bands have been since decades the ‘natural habitat’ for fixed satellite services (FSS). In this new landscape, this paper preliminary investigates the feasibility of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites directly accessing NR-enabled User Equipment (UE) in mmWaves, from a regulatory, UE characteristics, space segment, link budget and system point of view. It also identifies future R&D needs in this area.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121316965","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
