In a preliminary paper, the achievable capacities of diverse LEO satellite payloads were computed as a function of a parameter characterising the non-uniformity of the users distribution in the satellite field of view. As the non-uniformity parameter increases, the capacities of the various payloads benchmarked decrease because of inter-beam interference and shortage of frequency resource. A way to mitigate this capacity loss is to use flexible payloads with adaptive capabilities such as beam steering or flexible resource allocation. This paper proposes to extend the study to MEO payload and antenna architectures and benchmark them with respect to the capacity they can achieve and the power they require. A Circular Direct Radiating Array with Digital Beam Forming, a Sparse Direct Radiating Array with Digital Beam Forming as well as an architecture implementing Hybrid Beam Forming are analysed in terms of effective capacity achieved on different scenarios of users distributions with varying non-uniformities. The application of these results on a realistic scenario of user distribution concludes on the most promising payload architecture.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114665034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) imbalance could be caused by the coexistence of different types of terminals, possibly with different antenna sizes, and offering different classes of service. This link SINR asymmetry can be exploited to outperform orthogonal access schemes under different rate metrics, paying special attention to fairness in the service provision. Both forward and asynchronous return link are addressed, with minimum signaling information and emphasis on some relevant implementation issues such as framing and synchronization.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128646077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on the optimization of the limited satellite frequency resources by considering the emerging Carrier Aggregation (CA) technique. Focusing on a multibeam multi-carrier GEO satellite system, we propose a CA design targeting a fair user-demand satisfaction across the system and we study two potential use-cases, namely the intra-beam CA (aggregation of carriers within a beam) and the inter-beam CA (aggregation of carriers across beams). The performance analysis demonstrates the benefits of CA in enhancing the peak data rate of satellite users as well as in improving the overall satellite resource utilization.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"42 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114003096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the moment, the evaluation of the satellite system performance is usually specifically tailored to a given coverage and payload configuration, requiring a significant effort in the implementation and characterization of the target system before being able to get a performance estimate. This approach can provide a higher level of precision but limits the flexibility in the design by requiring a strict pre-selection of very few possible configurations to implement and test. This paper presents a software optimization tool aimed at estimating the system throughput in a fast parametric fashion, while taking into account different payload architectures. This tool, called SPATIAL, allows to perform a high level optimization of the payload, aimed at maximizing the system throughput while satisfying a set of platform constraints specified as input parameters. The assumptions and modelling behind SPATIAL are presented and then a limited set of example outputs are shown towards the end of the paper.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132701037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognizing the capability of satellite systems to offer wide coverage and enable cross-countries deployment, 3GPP is considering 5G technologies to support Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). However, while studies have shown the capability of NB-IoT to meet the 5G latency and capacity expectations in terrestrial networks, the question remains open for the satellite context. In this paper, we consider the necessary mechanisms for adapting NB-IoT to the satellite context and provide a study of the delay of a communication as function of gNodeB parameters, cell specification (size, link budget, satellite altitude) and payload size. Our study adopts the configurations used for the simulation based on the link budget given in the 3GPP Study Item and considers not only the random access procedure but also the whole communication process, with signalling, uplink /downlink messages and connection release. We find that the optimal Block Error Rate for minimizing the delay of the communication and optimizing the spectral efficiency is lower that the one recommended in nominal 5G specification.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133294021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variant, Moderate Source Routing (MSR), differs from standard CGR as the full route to destination is not recalculated from scratch at each node. Instead, the computed route is saved in a specifically designed extension block of the forwarded bundle (the packet of the Bundle Protocol, used in DTN), to be reused in the following nodes, after validation. In this way the route is recomputed only when necessary, i.e. when it appears to be no longer viable. This approach reduces the computational load, but its major advantage is that it is intrinsically more robust against loops, as described in the paper, where a simple but very challenging test case is analyzed in full detail. MSR was implemented in an experimental version of ION, the NASA-JPL DTN suite.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127691162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These satellites are in particular characterized by a very large transponder bandwidth and the use of wide carriers, which requires to seriously consider the impact of linear distortions on the link budget. Due to the lack of appropriate mathematical models, satellite manufacturers have to resort to costly and time-consuming simulations to estimate the impact of linear distortions. Thus, this paper presents an analytical characterization of linear distortions in the context of satellite communications and exposes three approaches to determine the carrier-to-interference ratio. The paper thoroughly describes the first order of linear distortions and derives a closed-form solution. After that, the derived analytical results are validated by simulation. Finally, the performance of the proposed methods is assessed in a carrier allocation scenario, where the possibility of near-real time optimization offered by these methods is emphasized.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123509337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, the model of the signals received at the co- and cross-polar HUB output ports is derived. Based on this, the XPD optimization procedure is described, relying on the power measurement of specific signals received on the two ports. As the signal on the cross-polar output is received with a very low signal-to-noise ratio, its demodulation and power measurement are enabled by transmitting a highly spread spectrum signal. Also, the successive interference cancellation technique typical of the enhanced-spread spectrum access (E-SSA) protocol is here exploited to retrieve the useful signal on the cross-polar port. Finally, simulation results validate the proposed approach and preliminary on-field measurements show the operability of the system.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"65 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133309330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed approach utilizes an online random regression forest (ORRF) to predict time series of signal to noise ratio (SNR) values aiding the ACM switching decisions. The evaluation of the ACM algorithms is based on two years of Q/V-band channel data recorded at the ground station in Graz using the Alphasat experimental Q/V-band payload. The results indicate that the ORRF based approach could outperform the classical approaches in terms of spectral efficiency, and parameterization of the ORRF is simpler and needs less knowledge of the channel properties as the discussed classical ACM approaches.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"721 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116130019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
