It examines how TCP ACKs are adapted on paths with high asymmetry and then discusses the implications of the way ACKs are used by a QUIC connection. It presents new experimental results for a satellite scenario using two IETF QUIC implementations, and explores the impact of different ACK policies on performance. The results show that reducing the number of ACKs sent per packet reduces the resource usage in the satellite return link subsystem, and can in some cases improve forward path performance, without impacting congestion control performance.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134336603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Satellite networks may ultimately play a significant role in the global telecommunication market. As an illustration of this trend, satellite stakeholders are pushing with some success for a satellite component in the global 5G system. With power fluctuations similar to those of single carrier waveforms, the discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) modulation appears as a relevant waveform for some satellite applications such as backhauling. Despite its many advantages, DFT-s-OFDM still lacks of reference signals (RS) showing low-power fluctuations for whatever length. In this paper, we propose a new RS that consists in inserting an OFDM pilot with its own cyclic prefix within a DFT-s-OFDM symbol. The novelty is here to modulate specific samples that are computed to closely match - after modulation - the OFDM pilot thus minimizing the interference resulting from the insertion. Performance evaluations assess the relevance of the proposed scheme that brings the flexibility of OFDM RS to DFT-s-OFDM systems.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114312503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, services like the Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) are using this band in several countries. Therefore, this paper presents a coexistence study of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) and FSS services in the 3500–3700 MHz in Colombia. Simulations were done in realistic scenarios in the city of Bogota, Colombia. Preliminary results show that critical scenarios are the ones from the LTE eNodeB (eNB) and Users Equipment (UE) nodes to the FSS earth stations. The study includes the analysis of Guard Bands (GB) and arrival angles into the Protection Distances (PD). Results show that the PD is highly dependent on the angle of the interfering signal and the GB used. The PD for a cochannel interference in a suburban scenario is higher than 250km, in the worst-case scenario, and could be reduced down to 17.5 km if a 25 MHz GB is included and the angular difference of the interfering LTE-A signal is 42□. Moreover, our results show that the PD needed for interference from UE are 100 times less compared to the eNB ones.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130043434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is one of the technologies that will address the massive machine type communication (mMTC) traffic of the 5G. To meet the demanding need for global connectivity, satellite communications can provide an essential support to complement and extend the NB-IoT terrestrial infrastructure. However, the presence of the satellite channel comes up with new demands for the NB-IoT procedures. In this paper, we investigate the main challenges introduced by the satellite channel in the NB-IoT random access procedure, while pointing out valuable solutions and research directions to overcome those challenges.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128267116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aggressive frequency reuse can overcome spectrum limitations but at the expense of inducing harsh cochannel interference (CCI). This problem is further compounded by memory effects of CCI, arising when co-channel signals combine asynchronously. To avoid exponential increase in complexity, state-of-the-art user-terminal receivers assume memoryless CCI, thus harming their performance. First, we provide analytical characterization of CCI accounting for memory, a formulation that captures synchronization impairments. Then, low-complexity receivers are developed to compensate for spatial and temporal CCI profiles, with computational complexity increasing only linearly in the memory span. This is achieved by our novel soft-in soft-out, iterative divide-and-conquer (IDAC) strategy, decomposing interference into smaller sets depending on intensity. A set is created from weak interferers which are not decoded but considered as thermal noise. The interferers which are decoded are further split into a set that subtracts strong ones and another set addressing intense interferers in an optimal-Bayesian fashion. Extensive numerical studies reveal that the IDAC architecture offers lossless compensation of dominant CCI with memory, when rate coordination is guided by network information theory, offering beam-edge user terminals an edgeless quality-of-service.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124994080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scenario is nicknamed optical on-off keying (O3K) due to the choice of this binary modulation format. In optical LEO DTE links the main impairment is atmospheric turbulence, which is a slow fading process with relatively long coherence time (typically some milliseconds). To mitigate this and to allow for any forward error correction (FEC) code to operate properly, a long channel interleaver is usually employed at the physical layer. The present paper provides some practical guidance on how to dimension such an interleaver by performing a realistic numerical analysis based on a comprehensive software simulator, along with a statistical analysis to gain a deeper insight. Overall, this work is meant to support the CCSDS O3K standardization activity.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132458750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, high throughput satellite systems of next generation require the intrinsic flexibility of active antennas, making them one of the most relevant research topics of the recent years. At the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no literature investigating the signal-to-nonlinear-distortion ratio (SNDR) in active antennas. Hence, in this paper we propose a semianalytical model to evaluate the impact of the nonlinear distortion generated by solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) in direct radiating arrays (DRAs) for two very relevant waveforms: the DVB-S2X waveform, that is one of the most successful standards for satellite communications, and the New Radio waveform, that is going to integrate non-terrestrial networks in the 5G framework.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133196358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deployment of QUIC is an opportunity for improving the quality of experience when exploiting satellite broadband accesses. Indeed, the fast establishment of secured connections reduces the short files transmission time. Moreover, removing transport layer performance enhancing proxies reduces the cost of network infrastructures and improves the integration of satellite systems. However, the congestion and flow controls at end points are not always suitable for satellite communications due to the intrinsic high bandwidth-delay product. Further acceptance of QUIC in satellite systems would be guaranteed if its performance in specific use-cases is increased. We propose a running code for an IETF document, and based on an emulated platform and on open-source software, this paper proposes values of performance metrics just as one piece of the puzzle. The final performance objective requires consensus among the different actors. The objective should be challenging enough for satellite operators to allow QUIC traffic but reasonable enough to keep QUIC deployable on the Internet.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133631363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system will be able to improve service availability by covering a rainy area (where satellite broadcasting occasionally cannot be received due to rain attenuation) with a signal from a sunny area via an IP network. This system also uses a common forward error correction (FEC) technique between the broadcasting satellite and IP network, which enables seamless channel switching and makes the reception algorithm common between both channels. In this paper, we focus on a FEC technique in IP network, which is key to achieve this system. We evaluated the error-correction performance in an IP network with the LDPC codes designed for satellite broadcasting through computer simulation. We also propose a method of adjusting the LDPC coding rate with padding bits according to the transmission characteristics of broadcasting satellite and IP network, which reduces IP traffic congestion. Therefore, the LDPC codes designed for satellite broadcasting can achieve adequate error-correction performance even in an IP network with packet loss.","PeriodicalId":218343,"journal":{"name":"2020 10th Advanced Satellite Multimedia Systems Conference and the 16th Signal Processing for Space Communications Workshop (ASMS/SPSC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129917476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
