In order to achieve that, many modeling techniques for the interdependencies existing among them have been proposed. Now, a crucial issue is how to use such models to develop tools able to estimate the status of key elements of CIs, quantify the possible threats and suggest adequate countermeasures to human operators and actors. Due to security, commercial and technological aspects, the only feasible approach is to provide distributed and interconnected state/interdependency estimators. In this paper the general problem of the state estimation of interconnected systems sharing the same model is introduced. A first step in the solution of such a challenging problem is then provided in the case of linear systems. The final objective of this research is to define an effective framework for the problem at hand, and then implement and validate an on-line distributed state/interdependency estimator within the EU IST MICIE project.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133840656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results obtained can be combined to improve the final output in order to get a more defined edge strength map. In this paper different combinations of methods are implemented and evaluated using a criterion based on the quality of the detected edges over the original image. The aspects considered are the false alarm rate, edge thickness and discontinuities inside the detected edges. The results obtained with the edge enhancement techniques are compared and conclusions about the best combination strategies are extracted.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"322 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134015990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The industrial world has been preparing to the transition to IPv6. Recently, IP is being introduced to the fieldbus protocols, which is used in the industrial network. Due to its enormous amount of addresses, IPv6 can provide seamless end-to-end communications between devices. Therefore IPv6 is considered to be a more suitable protocol than IPv4 for the fieldbus protocols. However, many kinds of fieldbus protocols are designed to work on IPv4, because most of them were designed before 2000. This paper introduces the requirements and issues to adapt the fieldbus protocols to IPv6 by investigating FOUNDATION Fieldbus HSE as the representative of IP based fieldbus protocols.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"303 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132771374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are high quality platforms that require that computation resources be used in a cost-effective way. Multimedia applications compete for resources in a greedy manner, which may threaten the safe system execution. Arbitration of application execution is needed to keep system stability, especially in the event of unexpected changes in the resource requirements demanded by applications. Changes may be caused by a modification in the nature of the incoming media or by the user action. Such changes should trigger an adaptation process to handle the new situation in a way that overall system quality is preserved. This paper describes the mechanisms that have been developed to handle situation where adaptation is needed in such a way that stability is preserved avoiding over reaction. An adaptation protocol based on the definition of a safety band for filtering peaks in resource demands is set for this purpose. The paper presents experimental results that show the appropriate filtering of these peaks, which validate the presented concepts.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125551049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the current IEC 61499 implementations solve this problem through the use of XML. Although XML is flexible, extensible, and human readable it has the main drawbacks of a great overhead and that it is elaborative to parse. A binary XML representation promises to reduce the overhead and ease the parsing process and therefore allowing to be used on small embedded control systems. This work applies three common binary XML formats to the configuration interface of IEC 61499 and compares their characteristics.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127629636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

UDP/IP protocol is known to be effective for motion control systems over network such as bilateral control system. However, UDP does not have a mechanism of congestion avoidance. The congestion, which causes large communication delay, jitter and packet loss, significantly deteriorates performance and stability of motion control systems. To avoid this congestion, a novel congestion control method, which adjusts a packet-sending period in real time, is proposed. The validity of the proposed method is shown by simulation and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132564784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Storage facilities are typically very large underground salt caverns or depleted gas reservoirs that have undergone an expensive conversion process. Storage is extremely important because of the strong seasonality in natural gas prices due to demand patterns. We study the effects of competition when firms share space and injection/withdrawal resources and behave in a rational, self-interested manner to optimize utilization (typically using software systems to assist in decision support). Strategic interaction occurs between firms because injectability and deliverability depend on the total inventory stored. We analyze the interaction that occurs in a pre-commitment game where firms commit to inject until a certain time and subsequently withdraw the commodity until it is exhausted. We compute equilibrium and welfare maximizing outcomes and calculate losses in efficiency. We also study the effects of incorporating a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy on overall welfare. Our results indicate that significant inefficiencies can occur in both settings and, therefore, have significant implications for the regulatory systems for storage facilities, price stability in the gas markets and the operational policies for storage companies.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"299 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124278817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
