Traffic models can be viewed as stochastic predictions about the future network state, and can be used to generate traces of potential future network behavior. Our approach is to use such traces to heuristically evaluate candidate control actions using a technique called hindsight optimization. In hindsight optimization, the finite-horizon \"utility\" achievable from a given system state is estimated by averaging estimates obtained from a number of traces starting at the state. For each trace, the utility value of the state is estimated by determining the optimal \"hindsight control\"-this is the control that would be applied by an optimal controller that somehow \"knew\" the whole trace beforehand-and then measuring the utility obtained under that control. Averaging over many samples then gives a simulation-based \"hindsight-optimal\" utility for the starting state that upper bounds the true utility value of the state. This technique for estimating state utility can then be used to select the control-simply select the control that gives the highest utility. Our hindsight-optimization approach to designing simulation-based control algorithms can be applied to a wide variety of network decision problems. We present empirical results showing effectiveness for two example control problems-multiclass scheduling and congestion control.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. It consists in coherency tests with measurements and models. However, a careful diagnostic strategy has to be designed in order to achieve fault diagnosis of complex processes. To achieve the diagnostic procedure, a causal analysis allows focusing the coherency tests on simple models, resulting in a decrease of the amount of computations. This paper presents an application to a nuclear waste treatment plant. The proposed causal strategy for diagnosis is explained first. The set-membership coherency tests are then justified. Finally, a fault scenario is presented in order to enlighten the method.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. In this contribution we show how modern results of real algebraic geometry, a branch of pure mathematics, is used to compute subsets of the region of attraction of asymptotically stable stationary points of polynomial systems. This computation is done in a numerically stable and efficient way by reformulating the problem as a linear matrix inequality (LMI). For this reformulation results from real algebraic geometry are used. The results presented show very clearly that a multidisciplinary approach to nonlinear control systems leads to new insight and new powerful conditions. Some conclusions and an outlook finish the contribution.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. Hybrid systems are modeled in discrete-time within the mixed logical dynamical framework, or, equivalently, as piecewise affine systems. A stabilizing controller is obtained by designing a model predictive controller, which is based on the minimization of a weighted 1//spl infin/-norm of the tracking error and the input trajectories over a finite horizon. The control law is obtained by solving a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) which depends on the current state. Although efficient branch and bound algorithms exist to solve MILPs, these are known to be NP-hard problems, which may prevent their online solution if the sampling-time is too small for the available computation power. Rather than solving the MILP online, we propose a different approach where all the computation is moved off line, by solving a multiparametric MILP. As the resulting control law is piecewise affine, online computation is drastically reduced to a simple linear function evaluation. An example of piecewise linear optimal control of a heat exchange system shows the potential of the method.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. However, the rudder can also be used, in some cases, to reject undesirable wave produced rolling motions. From a fundamental point of view, the main issues associated with this problem are the presence of a nonminimum phase zero and the single input two output nature of the system. In this paper, the limitations imposed on the achievable closed loop performance due to these issues are analyzed. This gives a deeper understanding of the problem and leads to conclusions regarding the inherent design trade-offs which hold regardless of the control strategy used.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. We focus on static and structured uncertain models, where each parameter uncertainty is described by a bounded variable. In order to de-couple residuals from unknown physical variables, a parity space approach is proposed, where the parity matrix depends on uncertain parameters. Because of this membership approach, called the bounding approach, residuals represent a set of feasible behaviours and define therefore the normal operating domain of the studied physical system. To simplify its evaluation and work on a simple domain such as a parallelotope, residuals are linearised in the bounded variables and a reduction procedure is applied to decrease their complexity. Once the constraints defining this domain are determined, consistency tests for fault detection and isolation are built.","PeriodicalId":217237,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat.
