Those in vet practice, including veterinarians, vet nurses, technical staff, and front-of-house staff all have a role to play in ensuring that animals receive the best possible care. How should clinicians approach the cognitive load of decision making in stressful situations, recognise the biases in their decision making, and balance non-technical skills alongside highly specialised clinical skills to support animal health? Veterinary work requires effective communication across diverse teams in stressful situations, and good animal care necessitates an understanding of human factors in the veterinary practice. Even after care has concluded, veterinarians need to recognise the impact that human behaviour has on supporting animal welfare. We describe how human behaviour impacts veterinary care, and how veterinarians can utilise up-to-date research on human behaviour such as the Knowledge Deficit Model of communication, the Theory of Planned Behaviour, and the 5As Behavioural Change model to improve animal welfare. © The Authors 2023

Yet, volunteers and workers who choose to engage in this line of work realize the potential risks and deem them acceptable in relation to the potential benefits. Therapy dogs, however, do not have these same choices. Therefore, it is up to the professionals and handlers to assure that any and all risks and concerns be adequately addressed to make sure the animal’s physical and emotional wellbeing is protected at all times. Both the efficacy and the ethicality of the intervention rest on the ability to select therapy animals that do not simply tolerate their role, but that actively exhibit signs of enjoying it. Furthermore, all involved in the intervention must understand how to be the voice of the therapy animal in a way that reflects the animal’s free communication and allows for the expression of preference and consent. Therapy animal handlers, animal behavior experts, and veterinarians are best empowered to advocate for therapy animal welfare by being aware of the considerations, standards of practice, and competencies that protect all involved in the intervention. By working through applied examples of therapy dog Ivy and her handler, the reader becomes better prepared to suggest essential protective measures in AAI. © The Author 2023

In their roles as a teacher and a dog handler, the authors are able to provide unique insights into the challenges and strategies of successfully implementing a school-wide program. This case report addresses animal and participant welfare considerations in the specific areas of recruiting and selecting dog-handler teams, preparing teachers and students, program adaptations for differing abilities, and navigating loss due to separation or retirement. While the examples and anecdotes are from elementary children in a reading program, readers interested in animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) in other settings and with different clients can also benefit as the discussion is broad and the topics relevant to many interventions. Readers are encouraged to exercise proper preparation and planning, as well as consider the various challenges discussed, as a way to facilitate the implementation of future AAIs. Brachycephalic Ocular Syndrome (BOS) is a term used to describe the many ocular problems these breeds suffer from, largely as a result of their conformation. The exact presentation of BOS is often breed dependent but corneal health is often poor in the affected animals. When treating corneal disease in these breeds, attention must be given to correcting the underlying causes, the eyelids, cornea and tear film need to be thought of as one entity. Medial canthoplasty is the usual surgical treatment to improve facial conformation, but support of the tear film and correction of aggravating factors such as ectopic cilia and distichiasis may be required. As well as the treatment of individual cases, the development of guidelines and potential legislation to encourage the breeding of dogs with less extreme conformation is desirable. Public information plays an important role in educating the public on the problems associated with these breeds so they can think carefully before purchasing one and should they do so, what care they require. While dogs make excellent introductory animals, prey animals can offer a greater challenge and hence potential growth experience for clients. Animal choice depends on an array of factors including the client’s ability to engage safely with the animal, the treatment goal, and most importantly, the animal’s well-being and willingness to engage. To help ensure animal welfare, I detail how to mitigate the welfare challenges for humans and animals and provide examples of ways to interrupt potentially harmful behavior. Bears are one such example. Ursids have unexpectedly large relative brain sizes, indeed showing brain size increases similar to those observed in canids. Bears also have considerable space requirements, with extensive home range sizes seen in the wild. Species with complex requirements often face difficulties when placed in artificial environments. Cognitive enrichment, however, may work to ameliorate this by providing stimulating mental challenges for individuals living in zoological settings. This case study explores the proposed benefits of cognitive trials. To do so, we exposed 17 captive European brown bears ( Ursus arctos arctos ) housed in UK zoos to two experimental tasks (1) a puzzle box and (2) an object-manipulation set-up. A total of 14 of the bears voluntarily engaged with the puzzle box, while 15 individuals interacted with the object-manipulation set-up. The bears that failed to interact with the tests were likely dissuaded due to the collective nature of testing, a lack of motivation or fear of novel objects. Cognitive stimulation, such as that provided in our study, offers one means of improving the welfare of captive bears. We advocate the use of cognition studies for zoo-housed bears to enrich their lived-experiences when housed in zoological settings. When presented with a companion rabbit behaviour issue, it is, therefore, necessary to consider their management in relation to the habitat, biology and behaviour of wild rabbits. Health factors may also be implicated; although as a prey species, rabbits naturally hide signs of disease or injury. This can complicate a health diagnosis. This case study concerns an elderly spayed female indoor rabbit, Meg, who shared a positive relationship with her caregiver. Meg had experienced degenerative musculoskeletal changes for which treatment was on-going, and had previously had treatment for dental spurs and pododermatitis. Prior to Meg’s behaviour assessment, her caregiver sought advice from their Veterinary Surgeon due to Meg’s recent-onset urination outside her litter-trays overnight and occasionally during the day. The Veterinary Surgeon referred Meg to a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) for a behaviour assessment which was conducted remotely using a questionnaire, home-layout diagram, photographs, video-footage and video-conference software. A behaviour diagnosis was made regarding Meg’s emotional and motivational state, and additional stressors were identified. Due to likely health and behaviour overlap, the CCAB further liaised with the referring Veterinary Surgeon. A treatment plan was devised, which Meg’s caregiver diligently implemented. Meg responded well to her treatment plan and over the course of 3 weeks, inappropriate urination ceased. In turn, the welfare of Meg and her caregiver significantly improved. Good welfare depends not only on the management of the captive population as a whole but also on the management and husbandry of individual animals. Zoo keepers are able to reliably assess animal personality traits, and these traits are linked to measures of welfare such as reproductive success, stereotypic behaviour and physiological stress. Assessing animal personality can help to address some of the challenges faced in zoo animal management. A validated personality questionnaire is a valuable tool for zoo professionals, as it can be used to predict reproductive success and the cohesion of social groups. Knowledge of animal personality can help keepers to devise management plans for individuals, and improve keeper safety as well as animal welfare. Aspects of individuals’ behaviour can affect the success of reintroduction programmes, so information about personality can also contribute to ex-situ conservation. Some programs have been more effective than others. This case history describes the early implementation of a highly effective program for auditing animal welfare in slaughter plants. The lessons learned from the implementation of this program in 1999 are still relevant today. There were four major factors that made this welfare auditing program effective. They were: (1) corporate management became motivated to improve conditions in the slaughter plants after they visited plants that had severe animal welfare problems, (2) the welfare standards used to audit the beef and pork plants were simple and easy to understand. They provided clear guidance on conditions that would result in a failed audit, (3) more than one commercial company enforced the same standards at the numerous slaughter plants, and (4) there was an emphasis on repairing existing facilities and improving management instead of buying lots of expensive new equipment. There were only 3 plants out of 75 where expensive renovations were required. This case history will also discuss how veterinarians and management consultants can help food animal supply chain managers implement effective programs that will improve animal welfare. Practical commercial animal welfare assessments will need to be simpler than assessments used for research.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Author 2023\u0000
