A younger generation was chafing under his old-school leadership, aspiring to the middle class and an uneducated former slave did not seem the man to lead them there. Both churches survived, while giving birth to two new ones: Zion Baptist in Paris and Plymouth Baptist in Maysville. Plymouth was the brainchild of the Rev. B. Andrew Franklin of Louisville, of whose sexual scandals there the Maysville Baptists may not have been aware. In the fall of 1884, Green campaigned for William H. Wadsworth's election to Congress. This chapter details the political situation in Kentucky at that time. On Nov 27, 1884, Green, now a widower, married a much younger woman.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115771576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She gave graphic accounts of his bouts of drunkenness and violent behavior. Correspondence between George and Texie was unearthed. Faculty testified to his abuse of drink and a member of Texie's family testified to his inordinate interest in her. Hearsay evidence was admitted, even a letter reconstructed from memory. George admitted that his marriage was not a happy one but argued that he loved Texie in the same way that he loved all his students. After a week of testimony, the committee hearing the case ruled him guilty of having separated from his wife and of drinking whiskey. He was suspended from his ministerial functions.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126598340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dobyns's 8-year-old daughter taught Elisha, who already knew how to read, how to write. Both Dobyns and Maysville were growing in wealth, Dobyns investing in a projected railroad eastward from Maysville. Slaveholders near Maysville were increasingly alarmed by news of escaping slaves; Ripley, Ohio, eight miles west, was had some dedicated underground railroad operators, including John Rankin and John Parker. Free blacks were increasingly viewed with suspicion. After passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850, Green had difficulty traveling to Ohio on church business. Slave catchers were even venturing into Ohio to kidnap non-enslaved blacks.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122079923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gould, one of the men who assaulted Green on the train in 1883. Born in North Carolina in 1842, he moved with his family to Louisville in 1853. He attended Kentucky University in Harrodsburg, preparing for a ministerial career in the Southern Methodist Church. He obtained his preaching license in 1861. When the Confederates began their brief incursion into Kentucky in August 1862 he considered joining them but opted for the church instead. He married Ella Fullenwider in 1865, but the marriage soon turned sour. He had several adulterous affairs, often with black servants, and became an alcoholic He served various pastorates in Kentucky before coming to Maysville in 1871. In September 1872, he began looking for a different way of making a living.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116324960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gould successfully fought it, then fired the three teachers who had supported the accusation. Ten faculty members published a statement criticizing Gould and supporting the fired teachers. Gould was particularly angry at one of the signers, Professor A. G. Murphy. Murphy secured a position at a more prestigious school and left. The Paris Kentuckian, a newspaper which had supported Gould against the charge of drunkenness and would continue to support him in future disputes, did however note Murphy's departure with regret. A Cincinnati paper claimed that the majority of teachers were against Gould and predicted more resignations would follow.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124985979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1855 he started a church in Paris, over 40 miles from Maysville, preaching as well in Bracken and Lewis counties. In 1853 he purchased the freedom of his sister Harriet. In 1855 his Maysville church purchased lot to build on. He began alternating his Sundays between the Paris and Maysville churches. Dobyns allowed him to travel as far as Georgetown and Louisville for his preaching. His freedom to travel may have been due to Dobyns's having retired from his wholesale business. In 1856, he bought his freedom. But the Panic of 1857 ruined Dobyns, and to save Green's wife and children from being sold, a group of white citizens loaned Green $850 to buy them. Dobyns committed suicide in late 1859.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117170959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Angered by their abrupt demand, he refused. They tried to pull him out; he resisted; Bristow started hitting him with his valise. The conductor intervened on Green's behalf and the train continued to Paris. Green had them arrested for assault. The trial was postponed several times, finally taking place in March 1884. Green won his case. Though the jury did not award more than token damages, Gould and Bristow did have to pay for the cost of the trial. In the weeks immediately following the June 1883 incident both sides presented their case to the public in the Paris and Maysville newspapers, which generally favored Green. Increasingly unhappy with both his job and his marriage, Gould resigned his position in June 1884.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121167882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In August 1865 he attended a meeting in Louisville of black clergy that set in motion plans for a black institution of higher learning. In the same month, he had not only paid off the $850 but was able to buy the house he had been renting behind the Methodist Church. Slavery was slow to end in Kentucky, and Green had to fight to free his children in 1866. That year, he negotiated for the creation in Paris of Clayville, a neighborhood of black-owned houses. In 1867 he was a delegate to the State Convention of Colored Men held in Lexington reporting on the condition of freed slaves in Mason County. In 1868 and 1876 he campaigned for Republican candidates. In the 1870s he was embroiled in various religious disputes with younger pastors in Paris.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123267291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
