Bristow, Elisha Green's other assailant in 1883, was born in Bethel, Illinois in 1845. His father, a Methodist preacher, had pronounced Southern sympathies, running for local office under the Copperhead banner. Nevertheless, his son Frank enlisted in the Union Army in 1862; his two brothers fought for the South. Bristow served as bandmaster and saw little fighting, though he marched with Sherman. After the war he taught music at a succession of female academies in Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, and Missouri. He began to publish music for piano and voice. In February, Gould hired him to teach music and calisthenics at Millersburg. He led the choir at the local Methodist church and accompanied them, his wife, and daughter, on the organ. He and Gould collaborated on a hymn about heaven set to Stephen Collins Foster's \"Sewanee River.\" In the summer he performed at religious camp meetings.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123688984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He tried to conceal the verdict from Methodist authorities there, but they found out and fired him. He started a church of his own where he could preach to his heart's content. He called it the Independent Temple and it met in the Las Vegas Opera House. For the first months of its operation it was a success, attracting crowds intrigued by his nonsectarian liberal philosophy. He divorced his wife and married Texie Head in May 1885. When his church venture had run its course, he got a job as a reporter for a Las Vegas newspaper, later becoming editor, and subsequently worked as editor for various newspapers in New Mexico until his death in Albuquerque in 1911. Frank Bristow taught music in the Covington, Kentucky, public schools, divorced his wife, married a rich widow, who divorced him. He died in 1914.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"150 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125881741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

George Gould finds a similar position with a girls' school in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He takes up his new responsibilities in late July, bringing his mother and his son George and hiring Bristow to teach. He asks Texie to teach too, but she declines, thinking Ella would her life there uncomfortable, not realizing that George had left his wife behind in Kentucky. This chapter details Las Vegas's history and geographical situation. On September 12, he learns by telegram that Ella has brought up charges of adultery, alcoholism, and abandonment before the Methodist Conference and that he must return for a church trial in October. He hurries back to Kentucky, leaving the impression in Las Vegas that he was simply returning to fetch his wife.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130204875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Caroline Green married in 1871 and moved with her family to Yellow Springs, Ohio. Her son, Madison W. Baber (1873-1947), married into a prominent and storied black family that had been among the thirty slaves freed by abolitionist Moncure Conway, who took them by train through Confederate territory from Washington in July 1862 to Yellow Springs. Baber's daughter Bertha Morris lived long enough to vote against Barry Goldwater. Elisha Green is fondly remembered by his churches in both Maysville and Paris. In the latter city, the descendants of the congregation that rejected him in 1884 now claim him as their founder with as much pride as those of the original church, located one block away. Plymouth Baptist closed its doors in 1910. Clayville, the community of black homeowners he established in Paris, was replaced by new housing in the 1960s, but its name survives.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126602095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It faced competition from numerous other female academies, including a dozen in Kentucky. He accompanied sixty-five of his students on a day trip to the hotel at Blue Licks Springs, the girls singing and laughing with what some thought was too much exuberance. One of them, Texie Head of Missouri, injured herself there when climbing a ravine, and was confined to her bed to convalesce. Gould paid her assiduous visits about which his wife would later complain. Bristow formed a student orchestra and led them and the calisthenics team in performances in neighboring communities. On June 8, 1883, he and Gould would take them on the train for a performance in Versailles.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124420482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During his work Green learned arithmetic, weights, and measures. In his spare hours, he learned to read by studying the Bible. His wife, and now his growing family, lived thirteen miles away, and he visited them on weekends, a 26-mile round trip mostly covered on foot. Green began to hold prayer meetings in Maysville's black community. The group grew into a church, which leased a building next to the white Baptist church. Green began serving as sexton to the white church in 1839. In 1845, the white Baptists, impressed with his preaching, gave him a formal license to do so. This chapter recounts the social and economic history of Maysville, narrates the increasing tensions in the churches over slavery.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114062199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter narrates in detail the campaign of misinformation that led up to passage of the Separate Coach Law in May 1892, and the campaign against it. Elisha Green published his autobiography in 1888, ending on a triumphal note as he told of the assault on the train and his subsequent legal victory. But his life story was not over, as he continued to pastor his two churches for five more years. The Separate Coach Act went into effect Oct. 1, 1893, but Green was too ill to travel, having but a month to live. He came into the possession of Dobyns's widow, Elizabeth Dobyns. She lent him to her daughter for four years, after which he was returned to the widow, who had remarried. He admired her new husband, Walter Warder, pastor of the Baptist church in May's Lick. Green underwent a religious conversion while plowing a field, in imitation of the Biblical prophet Elisha, whom God told Elijah to adopt as his successor. Green apparently saw himself as an eventual successor to Warder, too, as a successful Baptist preacher. Green married Susan Young, a fellow slave, in 1835. This chapter discusses slavery in Kentucky compared to that in other states.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128353036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He had to take out loans from his father-in-law and others to purchase a share in the college. These debts put him in a financial bind for the next twelve years but did pave the way for a new career. In 1873 he acquired an honorary M. A. from Kentucky Wesleyan College, also located in Millersburg, and in 1877 a Doctor of Divinity from the Kentucky Military Institute, then in Frankfort. Gould became president of his school in 1875, buying out his partner. The school was supported by the Kentucky Conference of the Southern Methodist Church, which was impressed with his administration. In December 1878, the school was destroyed by fire. Gould spent 1879 raising funds to rebuild it, and it opened on schedule in September.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121660309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the fall of 1880, another Kentucky Wesleyan professor leveled charges against Gould, this time over money. Gould had sold him a stock share in the college to raise funds for its rebuilding, but had allegedly neglected to register the purchase. When confronted, he threatened the professor with physical violence. The dispute was aired before the Kentucky Conference of the Southern Methodist Church, but Gould again escaped censure. In the fall of 1881 Gould expelled a student on trivial grounds. Mrs. S. F. H. Tarrant, a prominent member of the faculty, objected, and he summarily fired her. She published her side of the story in a Paris newspaper, adding accusations of alcoholism and financial indebtedness. The Gould marriage was under strain at this time because of his increasing absences from Millersburg on student recruitment trips to Texas and elsewhere.","PeriodicalId":215612,"journal":{"name":"The Assault on Elisha Green","volume":"38 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115731125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
