It involves design specific cognitive activities such as Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test (EDIPT). In this paper we present an implementation of EDIPT framework by novice educational technology (ET) researchers and investigate if the quality of research problems generated by the novice researchers is comparable to the expert ET researchers. We find that the quality of the problems generated by the novices was user-centric and realistic, but expert researchers generated more thoughtful and formally articulated research problems.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129877564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though there are several works in mobile assisted language learning (MELL), yet in the Indian scenario, very little published research attempts exist to categorize and specify instructional design guidelines for MELL as part of the regular curricula. In this paper we attempt to address the gap. We report the first phase of our project where (1) we discuss the design and implementation of a Mobile-Web learning platform. The Mobile-Web interfaces for this system follow the REST architectural pattern, and it is available for use. (2) We illustrate how outcome-based instructional design (ID) may be fashioned for distributed learning, and finally (3) we justify how a mobile-web platform can act as a companion to the traditional classroom and supplement learning. We adopt the Transactional Distance (TD) theory as the foundational model and identify effective Engaged Pedagogy in order to reduce the transactional distance. The work reported here is being carried out at the department of Humanities & Sciences, VNR VJIET, Hyderabad, India.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115601623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of the systems are used for offline learning, use of ICT in classrooms is also popularized with the introduction of smart classrooms. Typically, a large classroom (with over 100 students) suffers from difficulties in audibility of lectures, teacher-student interaction, monitoring attention of students, collecting attendance, and conducting examinations. This paper describes an ICT-based system (named Avabodhaka) to enable effective lecture delivery and to facilitate interaction in large classrooms apart from other activities mentioned. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) paradigm has been assumed for this system. The system delivers the lecture slides and audio of the lecture to the students' devices in real-time. The system also enables the students to post their queries to the teacher's device during the lecture and facilitate interaction among the students. This system also facilitates collecting attendance, conducting and evaluating tests in classroom. A preliminary study was conducted in a classroom to understand the acceptance of the system. From the response of the participants we found the system has facilitated better interaction in the classroom.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123224838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Supportively various research studies have proved that technology plays a major role in supporting the learners in a number of ways in the process of which they become self-directed and independent. This paper examines the use of 'text constructing software' and 'multimedia simulation' in teaching paraphrasing and logo designing to a group of students pursuing Masters programme in Business Management. It was found that students could effectively learn to improve socio cognitive skills in their writing samples.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126194460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dynamically generated problem statements ensure a fairly large set of, distinct problems. The automated generic checkers allow the solutions developed by the students to be evaluated rapidly online. Here we illustrate this concept by presenting three classes of dynamic problems for three topics and their corresponding checkers. The strength of the scheme presented here is that the checker may be developed using the COLDVL tool itself and does not require the instructor to develop special skills, such as mastering formal verification techniques for this purpose. More such problem classes would need to be developed to make this scheme deployable. The results of the current effort are encouraging. Satisfactory evaluation studies of COLDVL are also presented here.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126221408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is quite common for such descriptions to be ambiguous (or appear to be so), particularly when instructors or students are not fluent in the natural language. Two questions arise: (1) Can an instructor unambiguously convey the intended description to students in a secure manner (i.e., without revealing the instructor's own solution)? (2) Can such a tool operate offline (i.e., without requiring internet access)? Question (1) on its own can be addressed by permitting students to upload their attempts to a server, where they can be checked against the instructor's solution for equivalence. Such feedback cannot be obtained by students lacking reliable internet connectivity. In this paper, we present a technique to address both these questions: assuming cryptographically secure hash functions exist, a student learns only whether her attempt is equivalent to the instructor's solution (but nothing further), and after downloading the problem statement, all subsequent computation is performed on the student's own computer. We have implemented this functionality as an open-source extension to JFLAP, a popular educational tool in this domain.","PeriodicalId":215344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Technology for Education (T4E)","volume":"05 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130055376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
