The algorithm consists of a multiframe minimum probability of error Bayes detector integrated with a multiframe maximum a posteriori (MAP) position estimator. The design of the detector/tracker incorporates the models for target signature, target motion, and clutter; it uses recursive spatio-temporal processing across all available frames to make detection decisions and to generate position estimates. A simulation with an artificial target template added to a real clutter background shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms the association of a standard single frame image correlator and a linearized Kalman-Bucy filter in a scenario of heavy clutter.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. Image corruption is especially serious in SAR operating over ultra-wide bandwidths (UWB) and imaging over wide angles, as the system response becomes a complicated function of angle and frequency. The usual approach to removing the system response from measured UWB SAR images involves operations in the two-dimensional spatial frequency domain of the imagery. We show that correction can also be performed by convolving the polarimetric images with two-dimensional polarimetric calibration filters (PCF). When compared to the frequency domain procedure, filtering offers improved calibration on extended-area targets, lower sidelobe noise, and computational savings. PCF can be synthesized from knowledge of the system response, or by an adaptive equalization technique that uses clutter returns to generate filters to correct for leakage, or crosstalk, between channels.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. This has been the result of lower expected radar cross sections, the need for better clutter suppression, and the desire to operate without sensitivity time control (STC) in some radar applications. The analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is the most significant bottleneck in achieving this needed dynamic range (DR). An approach for improving the effective DR utilizing multiple ADC is described. The ADC are arranged in parallel channels with different gains and the approach is referred to as a \"stacked A-to-D converter\", or \"stacked ADC\". Detailed results are presented for an experimental brassboard system assembled to demonstrate and evaluate the concept.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. The spectrum has two noticeable characteristics. The first is a small, yet measurable, center frequency shift from the input center frequency. The second is the presence of harmonics (spectral lines) of significant magnitude centered on either side of the shifted center frequency. The primary source of these spectral characteristics is the discrete nature of the DRFM. We develop expressions to predicted the center frequency shift and the locations of the harmonics as function of the radar and DRFM parameters. These spectral characteristics should be of interest to radar and EA engineers since they could potentially affect system performance. Signal intelligence analysts should also find these spectral characteristics of interest since they provide additional clues for assessing EA systems.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. Specific consideration is given to the effect of bistatic clutter spectral dispersion on covariance estimation and the algorithm's resulting clutter rejection capability. Our prime research focus emphasizes adaptive processing methods capable of high performance with efficient utilization of training data requiring no spectral compensation for dispersion mitigation; i.e., methods capable of operation with training data from radar range cells located in close proximity to the primary range test cell. Thus for ground-based systems the clutter is contained at zero Doppler while airborne systems will observe clutter spread in Doppler due to platform motion (i.e., the classic angle-Doppler clutter 'ridge'). However, motion internal to the background clutter of vegetation, etc., will result in the clutter having non-zero bandwidth. This effect, generally referred to as internal or intrinsic clutter motion, will tend to increase the rank of the clutter in the space-time adaptive processing (STAP) covariance matrix. We examine the effect of this phenomenon on STAP. We consider the effects of a heterogeneous environment and provide examples based on site-specific terrain data that illustrate the impact on STAP performance.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat.
