The new target ranging eliminates the generation of target ghosts associated with most conventional techniques. A range-ambiguous radar with a medium to high pulse repetition frequency is assumed. Clutter is assumed to be present in multiple range intervals. The method utilizes constant frequency pulses that change phase pseudo-randomly from pulse to pulse. The phase progression of the received pulses are correlated with a bank of matched filters constructed using phase progressions representative of the different range intervals. Performance degradation of target detection using the pseudo-random phases is also examined. Target detection with strictly pseudo-random phases is found to degrade in comparison to the conventional constant phase methods. A technique that utilizes both constant phase and pseudo-random phases is proposed that performs both detection and target ranging well.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. Monostatic radars will provide detection and tracking of moving objects, but are limited by affordable aperture sizes to large target cross sections or infrequent revisit rates. Several authors have postulated that bistatic operation between a space-based illuminator and airborne receiver is one effective method of improving on these limitations. However, the ability to fully utilize the area coverage rate of the bistatic hybrid space-based radar is limited by a small receiver footprint as compared to the spaceborne transmitter. This paper develops the bistatic area coverage radar range equation, as compared to the monostatic equivalent. A description of multibeam receiver operation is presented along with the radar signal processing to provide the necessary signal-to-noise ratio for target detection. Finally, a first-order consideration of the waveform design approach to enable bistatic STAP processing for target detection is presented.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. The DBF radar system has the potential for improved time-energy management, improved signal-to-clutter (S/C) ratios, improved reliability and reduced life-cycle costs. However (if detection performance is to approach the monostatic case) these advantages come at the price of inherently more complex hardware and processing algorithms. In particular, when considering a bistatic system that utilizes a space-based transmitter/ground-based receiver architecture, obtaining detection ranges of practical value is problematic without having unrealistic requirements for space-based transmitter ERP or ground-based receiver antenna size. A predetection signal processing scheme is postulated which adapts to the nature of the bistatic signal, thus allowing for longer coherent integration times and correspondingly larger signal processing gain.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. The technique implements a matched moving target filter that is derived from the signal history along the target range-Doppler migration path mapped onto the SAR image from its real-space trajectory. The spatial filter is specified by both the apparent target range in the image and the magnitude of the relative target-to-radar velocity. Range dependence may also be eliminated in image filtering by performing the inverse Fourier transform of the SAR image data spectrum after a spatial frequency coordinate transformation.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat. The cyclostationarity of sea clutter is investigated and validated by processing measured high-resolution data. The clutter is modeled as a compound Gaussian process and the texture as the superposition of real cosines with unknown frequencies, amplitudes, and phases. We propose a method for estimating the model parameters and retrieving the texture component from the intensity data in the presence of multiplicative noise (the speckle) with unknown power spectral density. The method exploits the clutter cyclostationarity and is based on a relaxation optimization approach. The ability of the proposed method to retrieve texture information is investigated by processing simulated and measured sea clutter data.","PeriodicalId":214828,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2001 IEEE Radar Conference (Cat.
